“No Apology Or Remorse, Unforgivable”: Justice GR Swaminathan Slams DMK Govt Authorities For Contempt Of Court In Thirupparankundram Deepam Case, Asks If DMK Min Sekarbabu Told Them To Not Implement Court Order

The Madras High Court’s Madurai Bench on Friday, 9 January 2026, came down heavily on district and police authorities for repeatedly defying court orders in a contempt case relating to the failure to permit the lighting of the Karthigai Deepam atop the Thirupparankundram hill, warning that contempt charges would be framed if written apologies were not submitted.

Hearing the matter, Justice GR Swaminathan expressed strong displeasure over the failure of the Madurai district administration to file any response despite being granted ample time. The judge said the matter would be posted on Monday, 12 January 2026, for framing of contempt charges.

When the State counsel informed the court that the counsel representing the District Collector was ill and sought time, the judge asked, “Are they filing any written response today?” On being told that no response would be filed, Justice Swaminathan said, “Then I am posting the matter for framing charges on Monday.”

The judge noted that the case had been taken up in the first week of December and that the authorities had nearly four weeks to respond. “Today, I gave opportunity for them to respond. Matter was taken in Dec 1st week, they had full 4 weeks. You ought have (filed response). You have not,” he said.

Justice Swaminathan outlined what he described as three distinct acts of contempt in the case. “There are three kinds of contempt – first being disobedience of primary order, then passing a prohibitory order to prevent lighting of lamp and third, even after prohibitory order was quashed, the Court’s directives were defied,” he observed.

Referring specifically to the District Collector, the judge said, “Even (after quashing prohibitory order) DC had audacity to resist implementation of this order.”

The court also questioned why no criminal trespass complaint had been filed by the temple management after a flag was allegedly tied by a dargah on temple property. “That is temple property. How did you permit tying of flag by dargah?” the judge asked, recording that such a complaint could be filed and that once lodged, “jurisdictional police is expected to act in the matter.”

Expressing displeasure at the attitude of the authorities, Justice Swaminathan remarked, “They don’t seem to have slightest of remorse, you expect court to take this lying down?” He then directly questioned the Collector, asking, “Let me ask Collector direct question. Was it passed on your own? You take responsibility?”

The Collector, who was present in court, replied that the prohibitory order was passed “based on police inputs.” The court recorded that the order had been passed by the Collector on his own and not on the instructions of any other authority.

Justice Swaminathan further noted the absence of any apology from the officials. “Even today there is no affidavit of apology or remote (expression) of remorse,” he said.

Referring to appeals pending against his earlier directions in the contempt case, the judge said, “I have to eventually abide by what Division Bench says … But I won’t forgive on two counts – One, this collector passing prohibitory order to frustrate court order.” He added, “And two, after quashing the prohibitory orders, they had the audacity, the gall to resist. These two, unforgivable! Unless they apologise in writing.”

Responding to the court, the State counsel submitted that no one should consider themselves above the law. “Any person should not think they are above law. I don’t subscribe to that view,” he said, requesting time to file affidavits. He urged the court to post the matter on 2 February 2026 and consider framing contempt charges only after examining the affidavits, adding, “They are not going to run away, they are here.”

The court also pulled up Deputy Commissioner of Police Inigo Thivyan. Addressing him, Justice Swaminathan said, “You knew prohibitory order was quashed, and yet you did it on your own.”

In a broader warning to the officials, the judge observed, “One day Court may have to come to rescue of (these officers), then you may understand. When Inigo needs some promotion opportunity or something happens – God forbid, let nothing happen and let him have a peaceful career – but if something happens, he may come to the writ court and seek our intervention. Then, they’ll expect court to come to their rescue.”

He also asked the executive officer of the temple whether DMK HR&CE Minister Sekarbabu asked them to not implement the court order.

In its order, the court recorded that appeals filed by the department against the contempt proceedings were yet to be taken up by the Division Bench and directed that the matter be listed on Monday for framing of charges in the contempt proceedings.

“Hindi Demon, Hindi Destroyed My Dreams, K*ndi Nakki”: Here Are The Censored Dialogues From Sudha Kongara’s Anti-Hindi Pro-DMK Propaganada Film ‘Parasakthi’

sudha kongara parasakthi

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Friday cleared the Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Parasakthi for its scheduled release on 10 January 2026, granting the Tamil film a UA certificate. The certification, however, came after the makers carried out a series of modifications mandated by the censor board.

Directed by Sudha Kongara and produced by Dawn Pictures, Parasakthi underwent 25 modifications, including cuts, replacement and muting of phrases, as well as the removal and reduction of visuals, before being cleared for release. The film, set in 1960s Madras, explores the sociopolitical climate of Tamil Nadu during the anti-Hindi agitations. It is distributed by Red Giant Movies, which is associated with the ruling DMK.

Censor Board–Mandated Modifications

According to the certification details, the CBFC directed the filmmakers to make the following changes:

  • Seven phrases containing expletives were ordered to be muted across the film.
  • The phrase “Thee paravatum” (Let the fire spread) was modified to “Neethi paravatum” (Let Justice Prevail).
  • The phrase “Hindi en kanavai alithathu” (Hindi destroyed my dreams) was modified to “En orey kanavai Hindi thinipu erithathu” (Hindi imposition burned my only dream).
  • The phrase “Hindi kaththukittu” (learning Hindi) was muted.
  • Visuals showing the burning of an effigy named “Hindi Arakki” (Hindi Demon) were ordered to be removed.
  • The phrase “Hindi Arakki” was modified to “Arakki” (Demon) wherever it appeared.
  • The words Kundi, Nakki have been muted
  • The CBFC directed adherence to five modifications related to the voiceover discussing the imposition of languages in other countries leading to their disintegration.
  • Immolation visuals in the film were ordered to be reduced by 50 percent.
  • Visuals of a village massacre were directed to be reduced, including the deletion of visuals depicting the killing of a young mother and the display of dead bodies.
  • The phrase “Anti National scum” was muted in the dialogues and removed from the subtitles.
  • Visuals showing the application of cow dung on a post office signboard were deleted.
  • Visuals depicting gun shots involving a mother and a child were deleted.
  • Subtitles emphasising the Hindi language were removed.
  • The CBFC directed the makers to extend the duration of the pre-existing fiction disclaimer to allow more reading time for viewers.
  • A voiceover was mandated for the entire fiction disclaimer.
  • In sequences relating to Postal Money Orders, the board directed the insertion of a fiction disclaimer concerning the cancellation of UPSC examinations and the language proficiency requirement in Railway interviews.

Following compliance with all the stipulated modifications, Parasakthi was granted certification. The film was earlier scheduled for release on 14 January 2026 before the date was advanced to 10 January 2026.

The scale and nature of the mandated edits underline the role of the certification process in preventing content that could potentially inflame social tensions, offend linguistic or regional sentiments, or mislead audiences about public institutions. Without these interventions, the film could have contributed to heightened social discord and controversy.

Thanjavur Police In Collaboration With NGO Give Tickets To Pro-DMK Propaganda Film Parasakthi In Road Safety Drive

Thanjavur Police In Collaboration With NGO Give Tickets To Pro-DMK Propaganda Film Parasakthi In Road Safety Drive

An initiative carried out by the Thanjavur city police in collaboration with a voluntary organisation has triggered criticism after free movie tickets to a film, produced by the DMK first family which also features pro-DMK propaganda, and fuel were distributed to motorists as part of a helmet awareness campaign.

According to officials, the programme was conducted near the Aatrupaalam roundabout in Thanjavur, where motorists wearing helmets were rewarded as part of a road safety awareness drive. As part of the initiative, around 50 two-wheeler riders were given three tickets each to the upcoming Tamil film Parasakthi, starring Sivakarthikeyan and distributed by Udhayanidhi Stalin’s son Inbanidhi who is helming Red Giant Pictures. In addition to the tickets, two litres of petrol were also distributed free of cost to the selected riders.

The programme, however, drew sharp criticism on social media and from political observers, who questioned the appropriateness of the police distributing movie tickets as part of an official awareness campaign. Critics alleged that the police force was being used to indirectly promote a commercial film under the guise of a public safety initiative.

Several commentators also pointed out that the film in question is being distributed by entities linked to the ruling DMK’s first family and argued that the campaign amounted to political promotion carried out by uniformed personnel. They contended that law enforcement agencies are mandated to enforce traffic regulations, not incentivise compliance through film promotions.

Those raising objections described the campaign as a misuse of official machinery and called for clear boundaries between law enforcement duties and political or commercial interests.

“He Is In LKG, You Made Him Your Leader”, VCK Chief Thirumavalavan Takes A Dig At Actor Vijay & Aadhav Arjuna

"He Is In LKG, You Made Him Your Leader", VCK Chief Thirumavalavan Takes A Dig At Actor Vijay & Aadhav Arjuna

At an event held on 8 January 2026, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thirumavalavan made remarks targeting actor Vijay and former VCK functionary Aadhav Arjuna, targeting Arjuna’s decision to leave the party and join Vijay’s newly launched political outfit, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

Addressing party members, Thirumavalavan said that for over three decades he had guided and mentored leaders within the VCK and taught them the principles of Ambedkarite politics and party organisation. He questioned the decision to leave the VCK in favour of a party newly formed by a film actor, stating that Vijay lacked political experience and was only beginning to learn politics.

Thirumavalavan said, “For 35 years, I held your hand and guided you, but you’re leaving me, Thirumavalavan, who taught you politics, the one who taught you how a party should function, and suddenly someone who’s very popular in the film industry has started a party, and you think you can go with him? He doesn’t have your experience. He’s in kindergarten. In this party, I’ve already nurtured you, made you a PhD. You went and said that a boy in kindergarten is your leader. If you say that a child studying in LKG is your leader, then all these years you spent doing your PhD are meaningless, the doctorate you earned is meaningless. He doesn’t even have the experience you have. He’s only now going to learn politics. Now you go there and teach him; the disciples have to teach the leader. Here, each and every one is growing into a leader.”

Ma Venkatesan’s Book Titled ‘Dravidian Movement’s Historic Distortions’ Faces Censorship At Chennai Book Fair, Promotional Display Removed, Publisher Under Pressure

The 49th Chennai Book Fair has begun. And not without controversy. This year, writer Ma Venkatesan’s book ‘Historical Distortions of the Dravidian Movement (‘திராவிட இயக்க வரலாற்றுப் புரட்டுகள்’), has been released and is on display and sale at the book fair.

In this regard, promotional material, featuring Venkatesan’s book had been displayed prominently at the frontage of one of the book fair halls.

Soon after the display came up, objections were raised by certain Dravidianists, as shown below.

Following these objections, the banner was covered and removed. The action was carried out by the Book Sellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI), which organises the Chennai Book Fair. No official explanation was issued by the organisers regarding the decision to remove the display.

The incident has led to criticism from various quarters, with commentators describing the removal as an instance of intolerance towards dissenting viewpoints and raising concerns over freedom of expression at a public literary event.

“I-PAC Is The Eyes And Ears Of TMC”, Congress Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Accuses Firm Of Engineering Communal Riots For TMC

“I-PAC Is The Eyes And Ears Of TMC”, Congress Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Accuses Firm Of Engineering Communal Riots For TMC

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged that political consultancy firm Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) functioned as a “corporate entity” working to advance the political interests of the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal.

Chowdhury’s remarks came as Mamata Banerjee intensified her criticism of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over recent raids at I-PAC offices. Addressing the media, Chowdhury questioned Banerjee’s response to the ED action and alleged selective outrage.

The Congress leader claimed that it was on the advice of Prashant Kishor, without naming him directly, that the TMC brought a “renowned cricketer” from Gujarat to contest from Murshidabad, a Muslim-majority district, during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He implied that the move was aimed at defeating him by leveraging religious identity, though he did not name TMC MP Yusuf Pathan.

According to Chowdhury, a “heinous” act was committed in his constituency, alleging that a communal riot was engineered at the behest of I-PAC. He further claimed that this was later acknowledged by a TMC MLA in public.

Chowdhury also alleged that TMC MLA Humayun Kabir was used as a front, on I-PAC’s advice, to organise riots in Murshidabad, intimidate Hindu residents, and allegedly shift Hindu votes towards the BJP. He claimed that these actions were part of a larger political strategy.

Questioning Banerjee’s criticism of the ED, Chowdhury said the agency had conducted investigations against multiple political parties, including the Congress. He alleged that when Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi were targeted by central agencies, Banerjee did not raise objections, accusing her of reacting selectively now.

Further, Chowdhury alleged that I-PAC acted as an intermediary to extract money for senior TMC leaders and played a decisive role in shaping the party’s internal functioning. He claimed that while I-PAC did not contest elections, it allegedly influenced leadership decisions, internal voting, and organisational roles within the TMC.

“I-PAC acts as the eyes and ears of the TMC,” Chowdhury alleged, claiming that funds collected through these activities were routed to the TMC, with the consultancy firm taking a share.

Popular Kerala-Based Bhajan Group Nandagovindam Reportedly Faces Coordinated Social Media Backlash From Communists & Jihadis

It is reported that the Kerala-based bhajan group Nandagovindam Bhajans, which has gained significant popularity among youth and devotees, has come under sustained criticism and coordinated backlash on social media platforms over the past week.

According to reports, the group known for performing devotional music at temples and cultural festivals across Kerala and outside the state, has witnessed a surge in online campaigns questioning its activities, intent, and growing public presence. The group is said to attract large crowds wherever it performs, including at temple festivals and cultural events, with recent programmes reportedly drawing overwhelming attendance.

It is alleged that the criticism intensified as the group’s popularity grew, particularly among young people, and as its performances began to feature prominently in temples and public spaces. Social media posts by Communists and Jihadis circulating against the group have reportedly claimed that such bhajan initiatives are part of a broader ideological or political mobilisation, a charge that supporters of the group have rejected.

It is further alleged that some online posts and commentaries by these Communists and jihadis have sought to portray bhajan groups as instruments of covert social or political engineering, despite the programmes being presented as devotional or cultural in nature. Supporters have countered these claims by stating that bhajans and similar devotional gatherings are long-standing cultural practices in Kerala, especially during temple festivals and religious seasons, and are not confined to any political agenda.

Reports also indicate that criticism has not been limited to online commentary, with apprehensions expressed that sections of the media may amplify the allegations. At the same time, it is claimed that supporters view the backlash as part of a broader resistance to the increasing participation of youth in temple-based cultural and devotional activities.

It is alleged that the debate has widened into a larger discussion on social media about religious expression, cultural practices, and the boundaries of secularism in public spaces. Posts supporting the bhajan group have described the current developments as reflective of a wider revival of interest in temple traditions and devotional music among younger generations.

“You Don’t Know Which Dog Is In What Mood”: Supreme Court Questions Presence Of Stray Dogs In Courts, Schools, Hospitals; Tells Dog Lovers To Feed In Shelter If They’re So Concerned

Stray Dog Menace: Madurai Bench Of Madras High Court Considers Enforcing Supreme Court’s Delhi Directive

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, observed that it is impossible to predict an animal’s behaviour when it is in a “mood to bite,” while hearing a matter related to stray dogs. The court questioned why stray dogs should be present inside sensitive premises such as courts, schools, and hospitals, and asked what objection could exist to removing them from such institutional areas.

A three-judge bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and N V Anjaria clarified that its modified order was restricted to institutional areas and would not apply to public roads.

Emphasising the need for preventive measures, the bench noted the difficulty in identifying dangerous dogs based on behaviour alone, particularly in the context of managing stray dog populations on roads and streets.

“It’s just not just about biting; but also the threat caused by dogs. Of accidents. How can you identify? Which dog is in what mood in the morning, you don’t know,” Justice Vikram Nath observed.

Justice Sandeep Mehta drew a distinction between streets and institutional spaces, questioning the need for dogs inside court premises, schools, and hospitals. He remarked that institutions are not streets and must be kept safe.

The court also referred to its earlier order passed in November 2025, when it took note of an “alarming rise” in dog bite incidents within institutional areas such as educational institutions, hospitals, and railway stations. At that time, the apex court had directed authorities to relocate stray dogs to designated shelters after due sterilisation and vaccination.

The bench had further instructed authorities to release stray dogs back to the place from where they were picked up and had also directed the removal of cattle and other stray animals from state highways, national highways, and expressways.

However, the three-judge bench had earlier clarified that the relocation directive would not apply to dogs infected with rabies or suspected to be infected with rabies.

After Hit Job On Zoho Founder Sridhar Vembu’s Personal Life, Leftist Rag TNM’s Editor Dhanya Rajendran Hints At Another Hit Job

A day after publishing a paywalled article centred on the personal divorce proceedings of Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu, The News Minute editor Dhanya Rajendran indicated that a more detailed profile of the entrepreneur is forthcoming. On her X handle, she announced this writing, “Coming up soon a detailed profile by @Indulekha_A. What we published yesterday was something we stumbled on while reporting the profile. The profile will be an in depth one.”

The initial article, described by TNM as an “exclusive,” focused extensively on a January 2025 interim order passed by a California court in an ongoing divorce case involving Vembu. The report relied heavily on judicial observations made during emergency proceedings and was placed behind a paywall.

Critics have questioned the public-interest basis of the article, noting that it dealt primarily with a private marital dispute still under adjudication, rather than corporate governance, regulatory issues, or matters affecting stakeholders or the public at large. They have also pointed out that the order cited in the report is nearly a year old and remains subject to appeal.

Legal counsel representing Vembu has disputed the portrayal of the case, stating that the interim order was passed on an emergency application with limited opportunity for response, that subsequent judicial proceedings have stayed parts of the order, and that the matter is still being contested. The counsel has also said that the widely cited bond amount has no final legal determination and is under appeal.

Dhanya Rajendran’s announcement about the “in depth profile” seems more like a threat than an announcement.

After what they did with the Dharmasthala fake burial case, their credibility has reached rock-bottom. Now they come up with new targets, especially on the Hindu/nationalistic side. The upcoming hitjobs on Sridhar Vembu is going to be a targeted operation aimed at systematically dismantling the public image of Sridhar Vembu, a man whose traditionalist ethos and monumental success stand as a rebuke to their worldview.

In the upcoming “in-depth” sequel, Dhanya Rajendran is hinting that the character assassination is entering its next phase. More personal details will be weaponised, more contested allegations will be presented as fact, all packaged as a ‘profile’ to lend it a garb of legitimacy.

TNM and Dhanya Rajendran’s objective is not the truth, just smear. From The New Murasoli, TNM has morphed into The Nakkheeran Minute. The promised ‘profile’ is merely the next round of ammunition in a war they have declared on a man whose very existence challenges their narrative.

MK Stalin Releases Book On ‘Thirupparankundram History’ Written By DMK Govt’s Sollin Selvar Awardee Surya Xavier Who Called Brahmins As Dogs

DMK Govt’s “Sollin Selvar” Awardee Surya Xavier Announces Release Of Book On Thirupparankundram’s History

Surya Xavier, the recipient of the 2021 Tamil Nadu DMK Government’s “Sollin Selvar” literary award, announced that his ‘research’ on Thirupparankundram has been published recently.

The book titled “Thirupparankundram – A Comprehensive Historical Study”, Xavier claims offers an ‘extensive examination’ of the history, archaeology, religion, and politics associated with the Thirupparankundram hill near Madurai.

He stated that the book was researched and written over an intensive 25-day period, making one wonder about the quality of the research.

The 175-page book, Xavier stated, contains 13 core chapters. The chapters are said to deal with themes including the geological formation of the Thirupparankundram hill, early human habitation in the region, Madurai’s political history, worship traditions at Thirupparankundram, the evolution of dargahs, the history of Sikandar Dargah, Karthigai Deepam, regional and global historical timelines, the history of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, concepts of religious harmony, Sanatana traditions, and the intersections of religion, politics, and secularism.

The book has been published by Bharathi Puthakalayam. While the cover price is ₹300, the book is being sold at a subsidised price of ₹200 following the author’s request to make it more widely accessible.

The book, reportedly, will also be available at the Chennai Book Fair.

Attempt To Secularise Thirupparankundram?

The publication of the book comes amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the Thirupparankundram Karthigai Deepam, in which the DMK government has declined to implement repeated court directions relating to the conduct of the festival.

Despite a two-judge bench of the Madras High Court reaffirming the earlier order, the state government has stated that it intends to challenge the ruling before the Supreme Court. The matter remains sub judice, with the High Court’s directions continuing to hold the field unless stayed or set aside by the apex court.

In this backdrop, several publications (such as the above) and public interventions claiming to present historical or research-based narratives on Thirupparankundram have emerged in a short span of time. These works place emphasis on secularism, religious harmony, and the reframing of long-established worship traditions, even as the religious character and customary practices associated with the site are under active judicial consideration.

The release and promotion of such books at prominent public platforms, including the Chennai Book Fair, seems to be a coordinated effort within the Dravidianist ecosystem to reinterpret and secularise the holy abode Thirupparankundram through cultural and literary narratives, parallel to the ongoing legal and administrative contestation surrounding the site.

Who Is Surya Xavier?

In January 2025, he made a social media post targeting the Brahmin community and Indian Institute of Technology Madras Director V Kamakoti. The post came in response to comments made by IIT Madras Director, Prof. V Kamakoti, who had stated that cow urine (gaumutra) has medicinal properties and mentioned that in his village, it was traditionally consumed and mixed with panchakavyam for various purposes.

In the post he said, “Iyer Iyenkar Technology (IIT) – We don’t even need a pipe, we will just suck it by mouth.” He accompanied this comment with an image of a cow with a pipe inserted into its back. This post quickly attracted attention and sparked further debate, with many criticizing Xavier’s offensive remarks and the imagery used to target IIT Madras and its director, Prof. V Kamakoti.

A few years ago, he had called Brahmins as dogs and went on to abuse the then AIADMK Minister Ma Foi Pandiarajan.

“They had conspired to make Tamil Nadu as a hunting ground for Brahmin dogs. Ma Foi Pandiarajan is a dog who survives by licking. He is a Tamil Nadu Minister.”, Xavier had said.

Xavier also referred to Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, originally from Bihar, as “Aryan” Ravi. He claimed that Ravi’s ancestors migrated from Afghanistan via the Khyber Pass and are now attempting to assert control over this region.
