Tamil Nadu: DMK Govt’s attempt to demolish yet another temple stopped by devotees

A Narasimha Anjaneya temple in Varadharajapuram in Mudichur, Tambaram was ordered to be demolished by the District Revenue Officer Paneerselvam, as per the orders of the ruling DMK government. A notice was sent to the temple authorities, following which, 2 days ago, the officials brought a JCB to bring down the building near the temple.

However, this attempt was stopped by locals and women who are managing the temple. The devotees of the temple and others who came to oppose the destruction of the temple, have questioned the government as to why only temples are targeted while no action is taken on many Churches that stand on encroached land.

Lalitha, a temple staff said, “We have been managing this temple for almost 15 years now. One fine Friday evening, Special Tahsildar Ms. Bharathi handed a notice to us at around 5:30 PM and said that the temple was going to be brought down the very next day. We requested her to give us more time, but we were asked to vacate the temple immediately.”

She also added that Amudha IAS  herself had assured that the temple does not encroach any water body. She went ahead and built a compound wall around the temple because it does not encroach any government land. However, now, the current government officials are trying to demolish the temple on the grounds that it is encroaching a water body. She also insisted that Patta should be provided for temples that have been there for more than 15 years.

Carrots in Coimbatore’s Plains: How Isha Agro Movement Made It Possible

Unconventional, profitable and eco-friendly- Isha Agro Movement demonstrates a novel carrot cultivation practice with pleasantly surprising results

Defying conventional farming practices, Isha Agro Movement (IAM) has cultivated carrots in the plains and reaped a bountiful harvest in Coimbatore. The carrots which were intercropped on a model farm maintained by Isha Agro Movement in Semmedu village have yielded beyond expectations– both in quality and quantity. “After 110 days, the carrot yield is impressive, better growth both in terms of weight and length than what we expected. Usually, you will get 12 to 13 carrots for a kilogram. But our farm yield is 6 to 7 carrots per kg. This has happened as a result of natural farming, without the use of any chemicals,” said Swami Srimukha, Co-ordinator- Isha Agro Movement (IAM). Traditionally, carrots have always been cultivated in hilly areas like Ooty and Kodaikanal.

For more than a decade, IAM has trained over 12,000 farmers in Tamil Nadu, in natural farming practices. “Many of them have become successful and profitable farmers. Keeping them as model farmers, from their farms, we have been giving training to new farmers in natural agriculture across Tamil Nadu,” said Swami Srimukha.

IAM maintains model farms in Coimbatore, Erode, Thiruvannamalai and Thanjavur. A total of 60 acres showcase the immense ecological and economic benefits of crop diversification and natural farming techniques. “We have intercropped not only carrots but also beetroot, radish and coriander. This time, there was no reduction in profit even though there has been heavy rainfall,” said Swami Srimukha elaborating on the benefits of natural farming techniques.

Thanks to increasing consumer awareness both about organic produce and about the disastrous ecological fallout of chemical-based farming, there is good market demand for organic produce. And not just vegetables and fruits. “We have been cultivating the traditional paddy variety Karuppu Kavuni rice naturally for the last 3 years,” said Swami. The “black rice” commands a premium in both local and overseas markets. “Last year, the yield was two quarter tons per acre which is significantly more than the yield from surrounding farms that practice chemical-based farming,” he said.

Natural farming practices have shown to increase farmer income substantially while also enhancing soil health which is deteriorating at an alarmingly rapid rate globally, turning rich fertile soil into non-cultivable sand. Global agencies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have warned that this loss of organic content and resultant desertification could lead to catastrophic food shortages for humanity in less than three decades.

In India, it is estimated that organic content in the soil is 0.5% or lesser. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says that a minimum of 3% organic content is vital for soil to be capable of yielding. Recognizing the imminent danger of soil degradation, the Central and State Governments in India have been promoting tree-based farming and natural farming practices through several farmer incentive schemes and government policies. More farmers will be interested to adopt organic farming if special subsidies are given to the farmers who are involved in organic farming.

Isha Agro Movement (IAM) was established in 2007 under the guidance of eminent agriculturist Nammalvar, the pioneer of organic farming movement in Tamil Nadu. It was established as a platform to develop and promote collective farming. Since 2015, Isha Agro Movement has also focused on reviving natural farming methods that were traditionally followed in India up until four decades ago. IAM provides practical support to farmers in all aspects of natural farming including training in efficient natural farming methods, value addition, marketing and procurement. Till date, over 12,000 farmers have been trained in Tamil Nadu in natural farming methods and several have converted their farms leading to improved produce, enhanced market rates and significant health benefits.

NHAI to stop 4 big highway projects in Tamil Nadu due to state govt’s delay

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to preclude at least 4 big Highway projects in Tamil Nadu and de-scope many more. This decision was taken as contractors are unable to procure soil for earthwork and have been waiting for months to get their statutory clearances.

The NHAI has also decided to de-scope another 6 projects that are waiting for various clearances and is yet to get land from State government agencies. According to sources, the Road Transport Ministry has written to the state Chief Secretary stating constraints to carry out a dozen crucial big highway projects in the state.

“On the one hand, the state government is sending a number of proposals to the Centre for highway development while on the other it’s unable to provide necessary support for completing the ongoing works. The delays only result in the private contractors raising claims on the NHAI and arbitrations,” said an official, who did not wish to be named.

The projects that are to be foreclosed are two projects of 4-laning of the stretch from Tamil Nadu-Kerala Border to Kanyakumari and two projects of 6-laning from Sriperumbudur to Walajapet. In other cases, namely 2 projects of 4-laning from Vikravandi to Cholapuram, the NHAI has not yet received the required land and will therefore de-scope the works on the remaining portion for which land is unavailable and close the contract. In addition, the Pollachi-Coimbatore project is also foreclosed as the NHAI has not received the required land from the State government to set up a toll plaza and is therefore not able to collect user fee.

Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu apparently held meeting with 25 district collectors in July and very recently on December 16, PWD and Highways Minister E.V. Velu too held meetings with heads of line departments and NHAI Chief Manager.

However, the foreclosure of the projects suggest that the meetings have not turned out to be fruitful with the state government failing to take required steps.

‘Good governance needs good legislatures’, says Vice President

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu today stressed that good governance needs ‘good legislatures’ to ensure the accountability of the executive to the people. He said that using various instruments such as Question Hour, Short Duration Discussions, debates on Bills, etc elected representatives can question the government about implementation of policies, execution of various welfare and development projects. For this, Shri Naidu observed, there is a need for ‘good legislators’ who give their best to do justice to the trust reposed in them by the people.

The Vice President expressed concern that the oversight and accountability functions of the legislatures have been falling below expectations with persistent disruptions and forced adjournments. “Dysfunctional legislatures lead to compromised governance as there would be no fear among the executive of being questioned in the legislatures”, he noted.

The Vice President observed that Rajya Sabha has lost about 61% of the total Question Hour time due to disruptions during the just concluded winter session. This is a serious abdication of the important oversight function of the House, he noted.

“If an MP or MLA does not discharge functions effectively, he or she would have no moral right to question the executive at various levels”, the Vice President stressed.

The Vice President paid rich tributes to the late former Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Chennai on the occasion of his 97th birth anniversary, which is celebrated as the ‘Good Governance Day’. In a video message from Raj Bhavan, Chennai, Shri Naidu said Ajal ji was one of the tallest Indian leaders ever and one of the most glittering stars of India’s political firmament.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu recalled how Atal Ji strongly believed in placing people at the centre of the development agenda and demonstrated how democracy can be strengthened through good governance in a people-centric mode.

Observing that good governance enhances trust of people in the administration and catalyses economic growth, Shri Naidu expressed concern that there is a ‘governance deficit’ in delivery of services at the level of State governments and local bodies. He stressed that such a deficit increases time and cost overruns, jeopardises the goal of socio-economic advancement and alienates people from participatory governance. This needs to be addressed on priority, he urged.

The Vice President noted various initiatives to improve governance such as introduction of Direct Benefit Transfer, opening of bank accounts for financial inclusion, and the adoption of technology to improve transparency, accountability and citizen participation in decision making. He called for the adoption of such initiatives at the second and third tiers of governance.

The Vice President also suggested better use of citizens’ charters prescribing time frames for delivery of services to improve the quality of governance.

The Governor of Tamil Nadu R.N. Ravi was present during the floral tribute to late former PM of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

TN HR&CE officials celebrate birthday of employee by cutting cake inside temple premises

Members of the Hindu Munnani have staged a sit-in protest in front of the Magudeshwara temple in Kodumudi, Erode, demanding the immediate suspension of the Executive Officer and other staff for blowing candles and cutting a cake to celebrate a Birthday, inside the temple premises, which goes against the religious beliefs of the temple. A HR&CE officer has justified that a physically challenged individual has started as an employee in the temple and hence the cake was cut as a mark of celebration. However, devotees have requested a detailed  enquiry into this matter.

The popular Magudeshwara temple is situated in Kodumudi, Erode. It is a very important temple of the Kongu region, on which Appar, Sundarar and Sambandhar have sung Thevarams. Kaveri, which travels from North to South, takes a diversion at this temple to travel towards the East. This temple of utmost importance and glory is visited by several devotees, on a daily basis.

The devotees of the temple have accused the Executive officer and staffs of the temple for going against the religious beliefs and traditions (Agamas) of the temple. In light of such complaints, a recent news showed that the staff and Executive officer, blew candles and cut cake in front of the Amman shrine of the temple, going against the temple’s traditions. Due to this reason, members of the Hindu Munnani staged a protest in front of the temple, on 22nd Dec, demanding immediate suspension of the Executive Officer, Supervisors and staff of the temple.

The temple’s Executive Officer Ramesh said that a cake was cut because a newly hired officer joined duty. But, criticism has arisen that it is completely wrong to cut a egg cake in the temple, especially in front of the Amman shrine.

A few months ago, news broke out that the temple staff at the Thiruvateswaran temple in Chennai had taken off their shoes inside the temple and piled up rubbish near the temple God’s chariot car, causing discontent among Hindus.

Hindu Munnani to distribute Bhagavad Gita in front of Churches on Christmas to counter proselytization by missionaries

After a Christian Missionary group attempted to convert Hindus by giving them Bible in front of a school and a bus stop, the Hindu Munnani has decided to distribute the Bhagavad Gita in front of a Church in Udhagamandalam, Nilgiris.

On December 24, Bible was distributed to the Hindu students of Udhagai Gel Memorial school with the help of the school’s headmaster, in the name of Christmas celebrations. Another accusation said that on the very same day, another Christian Missionary distributed the Bible to Hindus and public waiting at the Conoor Bus Stop in Nilgiris, in an attempt to convert them. Hindu Munnani rushed to the spot on knowing about this incident, and successfully intervened to stop the proselytization attempt. The incident was reported to the local Police Station as well.

In response to this, the Hindu Munnani has decided to distribute the Bhagavad Gita in front of a Church in the area, on Christmas. A statement released by the organisation related to this decision said, “The Bible has been distributed in front of schools, bus stands and many other places in the area, on the occasion of Christmas, in an attempt to convert the public. No action has been taken against such missionary groups, even after lodging a complaint. Hindu Munnani has decided to distribute the Bhagavad Gita in front of Churches on Christmas.”

Christian missionary group encroaches entire hill in Thiruvannamalai

A notice has been sent to those who have encroached a government land and built a Church, in Elayankanni area of Thiruvannamalai. On enquiring, it was found that the entire hill has been occupied by Christian missionaries. The Church is run by the Vellore Diocesan Catholic Church.

More than 4,500 people are residing in the Elayankanni region of Thiruvannamalai. There is a 150 feet high hill spread across 160 acres of land controlled by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. It is mentioned in the Revenue Department register as Kallankattu. Christian Missionaries who first erected a cross on the mountain in 1961, then occupied 2 more acres of land on the hill and built a Church called Carmel Mountain Matha Temple. Later, the socially and economically disadvantaged locals in the area were enticed and converted to Christianity.

In 2014, Ravi, a DMK MLA from Sengam constituency, laid the foundation stone for a tar road leading to the hill, worth ₹ 30 lakhs. Due to this, five acres of land on the hill have been occupied for parking facilities and the hill has been demolished to make way for a tar road.

On 19th of last month, the Collector of the area, Murugesan, had visited the hills for a tree planting ceremony. He was shocked to see that almost 5 acres of land on the hill had been levelled and construction was underway. He then ordered the Revenue Department to enquire regarding this issue. The investigation showed that the land occupied by the Christian Missionaries was mentioned as Kallankattu in the official documents and that no lease had been issued to anyone for this government land.

On inquiring the local residents, it was found that the Church administration has occupied an entire hill. Notice has been sent to the Church administration to immediately evacuate all areas occupied by them, except for the land on which the Church is built. Similarly, another hill in Saveriyapalayam near this village has also been encroached, and a cross has been erected there, according to a report by Dinamalar.

Arunkumar, the District General Secretary of Hindu Munnani, has submitted a petition to the District Collector regarding the case where construction for Prayer Halls have begun on lands on which only permission for building houses were sought. The petitioner had mentioned that a group of people have been roaming across the area, luring innocent locals who are Hindus by saying that their diseases will be cured through prayer, and that they’re also building Churches and Prayer Halls on lands, where permission was only sought for building houses. He had also requested that action be taken against such illegally run Churches and Prayer Halls.

It is worth mentioning that the pastor who spoke at a Christmas event attended by Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin said that if the pending construction work of various Churches are resumed, then the votes of 60 lakh Pentecostal Christians from that area would go to DMK. It remains to be seen what action the Tamil Nadu government will take on the ongoing Church construction occupying the hill in Thiruvannamalai.

DMK government fails to fulfill promise of Pongal gift mentioned in Election Manifesto

Women in Tamil Nadu are largely angered and disappointed with the state government, now that the government is not giving ₹5000 promised for Pongal and ₹ 1000 per month for women heads of families, as promised in their Election Manifesto.

During the election season, DMK made a lot of promises with or without thinking of actually keeping those promises. One such promise made by the then opposition leader and now Chief Minister M K Stalin was, to provide ₹ 1000 to women heads of families every month. However, it has been more than 200 days since the party formed the government, and there has not been one word about fulfilling this promise.

Similarly, when he was opposition leader, M K Stalin promised to give ₹5000 as Pongal gift. Today, the CM has given up, not being able to even give ₹2500 given by former Chief Minister, Edappadi K Palanisamy.

Women, who had high hopes that somehow the CM would fulfill his promise and give them their Pongal gift, faced disappointment with DMK’s announcement yesterday. Yesterday, the DMK government sent a circular regarding the Pongal gift to the registrars of Cooperative societies. It mentioned, ” Set up a control room and appoint a liaison officer to monitor the distribution of Pongal gift packs to Rice family cardholders through fair price shops.” The CM, who said that ₹5000 should be given as Pongal gift, when he was Opposition leader, has entirely removed the cash gift from the circular this time.

Hindu Munnani submits petition against obstruction on Temple chariot pathway in Tirupur

The Hindu Munnani has submitted a petition to the Municipal Commissioner, requesting to drop the scheme of erecting electric poles on the middle of the road, making it difficult for the temple Chariot to pass during festivals, near Udumalaipettai, Tirupur. In addition, they have also requested that the lights be placed in the side of the roads, in a way that it does not obstruct the path of the Temple Chariot.

There is a well known Mariamman temple in Madathukulam, near Udumalaipettai, Tirupur district. One of the most popular temples in the area, the temple conducts its annual chariot festival (Ther thiruvizha) in the Tamil month of Panguni. Not only local devotees, but devotees from around the area come to worship the deity during the Chariot festival.

The Udumalai Municipality is carrying out the work of erecting a power pole in the middle of the central barrier being set up on the Pollachi National Highway. There has been heavy opposition that such an electric pole will be an obstruction to the Chariot festival, which is an important feature of the temple festival.

For this reason, members of the Hindu Munnani met with the Municipal Commissioner and submitted a petition requesting to erect the electric poles on both sides of the road, instead of the center, so that the festival is not disturbed.  The public have also opposed this scheme, pointing out that several devotees will be flocking together for the festival and the power pole will be an obstruction for them as well.
