TN Police Summons Journo Abhijit Majumder For The Second Time For His Article Criticising Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Comments On Sanathana Dharma

A few months ago, journalist Abhijit Majumder became the focal point of scrutiny by the Tamil Nadu Police. The law enforcement authorities went as far as reaching out to a media house in Noida, actively seeking Abhijit without the issuance of any prior summons. On the morning of 30 September 2023, Abhijit Majumder took to his social media platform, X, to share a disconcerting incident.

In an X post today (20 December 2023), Abhijit updated that he had been summoned by the Tamil Nadu police for the second time to Chennai, having already attended the first summons. Notably, this action came after an FIR was filed in September and four Tamil Nadu police officers were dispatched to Noida in search of him.

This police action against freedom of speech is a result of a piece authored by Abhijit in early September 2023 for FirstPost. In his analysis, he delved into the political implications of a controversial speech delivered by Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.

What Was The Article About?

Abhijit Majumder’s FirstPost article delves into the potential unintended consequences of Udhayanidhi Stalin’s contentious speech, suggesting that it might have inadvertently favored the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu. The analysis, titled “Udhayanidhi Stalin’s call for Hindu genocide does BJP a big favour in Tamil Nadu,” seems to have sparked displeasure within the Tamil Nadu government, with the term “genocide” emerging as a focal point of contention.

In the article, he also wrote, “Udhayanidhi Stalin’s message has also gone out loud and clear. The innate bigotry and violence of it may gladden many of his supporters, but it will also polarise and consolidate votes against him,”.

“His own mother is a devout, practising Hindu. In that sense, his rant is not just anti-Hindu and anti-Bharat, but it is also in a sense matricidal. The DMK may not be able to live it down,”, he wrote further.

What Did Udhayanidhi Stalin Say At The Conference?

To provide context, in September 2023, Udhayanidhi Stalin addressed the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists’ Association’s conference titled “Eradicate Sanathana Dharma Conference.” During his speech, he made incendiary remarks, stating, “The title of this conference has been excellently coined. You’ve named it ‘Abolish Sanatanam Conference’ and not ‘Oppose Sanatanam Conference’, so my best wishes to that.” He compared Hinduism to mosquitoes and diseases like dengue, flu, malaria, and coronavirus, asserting that these aspects should not be opposed but entirely eradicated. Udhayanidhi Stalin further criticised the concept of Sanatan Dharma, describing it as being opposed to equality and social justice. He questioned the meaning of “Sanatanam” and labelled it as something that cannot be changed or questioned.

He said, “Mosquitoes, dengue, flu, malaria, corona – we should not oppose these things. They’ve to be eradicated completely. The same is the case with Santanam (Hinduism). Our first work should be to abolish/eradicate Sanatanam instead of opposing it. So, my appreciation to you all for giving an apt title to the meeting“.

He also further went on to say, “What is Sanathanam? The name Sanatanam itself comes from Sanskrit. Sanathanam is opposed to equality and social justice. What is the meaning of Sanatanam? Eternal or something that can’t be changed. Something that can’t be questioned. That is the meaning of Sanatanam.”

BJP TN Functionary Booked For Social Media Post Against DMK MP Gets Anticipatory Bail

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on 20 December 2023 granted anticipatory bail to Pravin Raj, a Tamil Nadu BJP social media functionary who was booked for a social media post targeting Dharmpuri DMK MP Senthilkumar over the recent Parliament security breach incident.

A political activist and the social media in-charge for Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Tamil Nadu had posted on his X “#SecurityBreach happened in Loksabha you know why? Because of irresponsible MPs like you were distributing “Visitor passes” via social media for publicity and without background verification. Take responsibility on this #ParliamentAttack; don’t blame. @DrSenthil_MDRD

Pravin Raj posted this on social media on December 13, 2023, but eventually removed it due to its widespread attention.

He was booked under sections 504 (deliberate insult to incite a breach of peace), 505(1)(b) (intent to instill fear or alarm among the public, possibly resulting in offenses against the State or public tranquility) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and section 66 (computer-related offenses) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

The FIR was initiated by the Trichy Cyber Crime Police station in response to his tweet.

While Pravin Raj didn’t explicitly mention that DMK MP Senthilkumar was responsible for the Parliament attack, his comments were construed as attempt to spread fake news against the legislator.

He filed an anticipatory bail petition with the Madras High Court, Madurai Bench. The case, listed as item No.78, was heard on 20 December 2023 by Hon’ble Mr. Justice V. Sivagnanam.

Following arguments from both parties, the Hon’ble Court granted anticipatory bail on one’s own surety without imposing any conditions.

“In India, The Brahmin Termite Is Destroying Everything”, Says Dravidian “Anti-Methane Activist” Prof T Jayaraman

Speaking at a seminar that seems to be from 2022 on the topic “Why RSS Should Be Banned”, Professor Jayaraman, spoke at length about the RSS and its origins. The event was conducted by Tamizhaga Makkal Munnani and saw the participation of Thirumurugan Gandhi, rabid Dravidian Stockist known for his association with the LTTE.

In the speech, he speaks about “Brahminism” in particular, calling Brahmins termites who “eat” through everything like the pests.

He said, “The concept of Dravidianism arose in Madras province of that day. When Karnataka was formed by merging other nearby regions, when Telugu Nadu (Andhra Pradesh) was formed, and when Kerala was formed, they all looked back at them. Whether they will twist their mustache, mmhmm no. They are not ready to twist their mustache; not ready to accept Dravidam. Agents of Brahminism are making the word Dravidian into something that needs to be hated by denigrating it. In India, the Brahmin termite is eating and destroying everything. It did not leave out any leader behind, it embraced all. But it could not do anything to that old man from Erode who worked in Tamilnadu. That old man did not give even an inch of space in any row. He fought against Brahminism. It is a strong weapon in our hands. He opposed Brahminism as well as the political form of Brahminism which is Indian nationalism. All this happened in the past. But it is true that after Periyar, there was some slackening in the Dravidian movement activities especially opposing Brahminism. That gap was exploited by Brahminism.”

He further added, “In 1925, RSS – Rashtriya Swayamsewak organisation was formed. Five people including Savarkar and Moonje were part of it. Before that in 1915, Hindu Mahasabha was formed and even before that in 1875, Arya Samaj was formed by Dayanand Saraswati. It was Arya Samaj that said, India should become one. In that country of India, Arya bhasha should be the official language. He said, Arya Bhasha. The Hindi language we speak today should imbibe Sanskrit. The Indian Constitution says that the Hindi which has taken words from Sanskrit alone should be the official language of India. It was named Arya Bhasha by Dayanand Saraswati. We have lost a lot. Have you seen those people who show off their inked fingers after elections? He was bitten, a failure. This democratic system is the system of government devised by Aryans.”

It must be noted that Jayaraman was the chief coordinator of the Anti-Methane Project Federation. He was charged with sedition allegedly for delivering a speech and publishing a book that undermines the sovereignty of the state in 2017.

It is also important to note that Jayaraman was previously among the nine individuals arrested by the Pandhanallur police in Thanjavur district on charges of inciting protests against ONGC’s oil extraction in Kathiramangalam, Thanjavur, in July 2017. Heading the Anti-Methane Federation project, Jayaraman vehemently opposed plans for extracting Coal-Bed Methane and crude oil in the delta districts of Tamil Nadu.

“Hindi Is Our National Language, Everyone Should Know It”, JDU Head Nitish Kumar Tells DMK MP TR Baalu At I.N.D.I. Meeting

In a recent development at the I.N.D.I. Alliance meet, a language controversy unfolded between leaders of the Janata Dal United (JDU) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The incident, which took place during a speech by Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar and JDU leader, has exposed underlying tensions over the use of Hindi in the diverse linguistic landscape of India.

During Nitish Kumar’s address in Hindi, DMK MP TR Baalu reportedly requested Manoj Jha to ensure translation. The request, however, seemed to irk Nitish Kumar, who responded by saying, “We live in Hindustan, Hindi is our national language, and everyone should know it.”

It is reported that Nitish Kumar stopped Jha from translating. This statement, while reflecting Kumar’s strong stance on Hindi, also drew attention to the contrasting reactions from the DMK members present.

The lack of protest or objection from the DMK in response to Nitish Kumar’s assertion raised eyebrows, leading to questions about the party’s stance on “Hindi imposition“.

The Hindu reported that Nitish Kumar continued speaking and he delved into the historical context of India’s freedom struggle against the British and criticised the imposition of English. Despite efforts from several leaders to calm the situation, no translation was provided. Even when Lalu Prasad Yadav spoke later, there was no translation offered.

Following Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s initiation of the discussion, DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin took the floor as the first speaker, succeeded by Nitish Kumar. In an attempt to offset the fallout from Nitish Kumar’s earlier outburst, subsequent speakers, who typically addressed the audience in Hindi, opted to switch to English. This included Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party president Arvind Kejriwal.

It has been revealed that during his speech, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin expressed dissatisfaction with the Congress for contesting the recent Assembly elections independently, insisting that they should have united under the banner of the I.N.D.I.A bloc. Stalin had also engaged in discussions with Kejriwal before the I.N.D.I.A parties meet.

The DMK, with its stronghold in Tamil Nadu, has historically supported only Tamil and opposed Hindi. The party has been vocal in opposing any attempts to “impose” Hindi on non-Hindi-speaking states, citing concerns about cultural assimilation and the potential marginalisation of regional languages.

Critics argue that the party’s failure to challenge Nitish Kumar’s assertion on Hindi contradicts its previous stand against language imposition. Netizens also said DMK could have simply said “Hindi Theriyadu Poda” (We do not know Hindi).

Rancid, Rancorous, Ridiculous: It Is Raghuram Rajan Who Needs To Reimagine His Future

The man who predicted the global economic crisis, the man who targeted inflation, the ‘rockstar’ economist, Dr. Raghuram Rajan is often hailed.

This IIT-IIM graduate has had an impressive career and has gone on to achieve the highest echelons in his line of work – Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund (2003-07), Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India (2012-13) and the Governor of Reserve Bank of India (2013-16).

Yet, this economic stalwart’s recent comments make one think whether he skipped his Economics 101 lectures.

Speaking about his latest book ‘Break the Mould: Reimagining India’s Economic Future‘ in an interview to The News Minute, Raghuram Rajan passionately argues that manufacturing-led growth that China follows is obsolete and won’t work for India.

China is a huge country. The reason these countries managed to follow this route and move up is because they were initially competing with the West and the Chinese worker was one-fifth, one-tenth the pay of a Western worker and they had a lot of competitive advantage when they were fighting the Western worker. Today, the Chinese worker is still there. Because China still has people that it is employing in agriculture from the western provinces. But there’s also the Vietnamese worker, the Bangladeshi worker. This is the lowest end of the value-chain where the least value is being created because it is so competitive. What you wanna do is occupy the higher parts of the value-chain.“, Raghuram Rajan says implying that it is pointless for India to follow the same model of manufacturing-led growth because there is increasing competition in an increasingly protectionist world.

His own words from the interview note that this model has helped not just China but also Korea. Countries across the world have developed because of export-oriented, manufacturing-led growth. All of us would’ve studied that a country undergoes three stages of economic transformation – a primary sector driven economy to a strong secondary sector which then matures into a high-tech research-based knowledge economy.

Take for instance Japan. Japan was an agricultural economy before it was nuked and after World War 2, it began developing into a manufacturing hub with USA’s help often reverse-engineering the original product that was developed in the West. This strong manufacturing base helped it produce some of the best global brands across sectors:

Automobile – Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki

Electronics – Sony, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Panasonic

Same is the case with South Korea – Samsung, LG, Hyundai, to name a few. It became a manufacturing hub before becoming a research-based knowledge economy.

China too mastered the art of reverse-engineering to build its own products on a massive assembly line. China did not emerge as a global smartphone leader out of the blue. Decades of manufacturing has made it come up with brands like Oppo, Vivo, One Plus that competes with iPhone.

A country’s economy is just like a human or any other living organism. As a young baby it needs food and nutrition (agriculture). Once it becomes an adult it needs to be self-reliant that is able to sustain itself (manufacturing). Once your manufacturing heydays are over, you invest your experience and learnings gained, into research to build your own product or provide consultancy to others (services).

But for, Raghuram Rajan this is ‘old style of growth’.

He wants India to leapfrog into a services-dominated knowledge economy. How? By building more colleges like IITs and IIMs and export human capital.

He wants Indians to study in IIMs so that they become a ‘hot sought-after commodity’ abroad. So, basically Raghuram Rajan wants to create clones of himself and export them. He wants India to produce 200,000-250,000 of such IIM graduates.

“Increase the supply of very qualified people”, is his mantra for growth.

Now this is where one needs to question not just his credibility as an economist but also his intentions.

First the credibility part. Let’s take the example of a state with which he shares a connection – Tamil Nadu.

If one state has to be blamed for unemployable engineers, it is Tamil Nadu. The state has the highest number of engineering colleges in the entire country. Lakhs of engineering graduates have passed and continue to pass every year but hardly a few possess the skills of an engineer. Why? Because in 2006, the then DMK government in Tamil Nadu scrapped the filter – The Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination in order to increase the enrolment in higher education. This led to a mushrooming of engineering colleges with inadequate infrastructure and faculty. Engineering passouts became engineering faculty in the same college or some other college. With the advent of the gig economy, the engineering graduates end up being deliver boys.

Tamil Nadu did exactly what Raghuram Rajan advocates now – increase supply, build more colleges and invest in human capital. It turned out to be a disaster. Today, the state is employing workforce from other states to meet its labour demand in all sectors – from the fields to foundries and fancy restaurants.

Now imagine what would happen if India was to produce 200,000-250,000 IIM graduates!

A mindless increase in supply will result in low quality output, breakdown of the system or both. Does the rockstar economist not know this? That’s Economics 101!

An increase in supply will need an adequate increase in demand so that the supply gets absorbed by the system. It is a given that for a country like India, where population is both an asset and a problem, there is no alternative but to have a strong system (manufacturing sector) that can that can provide millions of jobs to skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers (through ancillary services that arises because of an industry).

It is shocking that a man like Raghuram Rajan can overlook this and advocate for exporting human capital.

Raghuram Rajan has for a long time positioned himself against the Modi government’s successful Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, especially for electronics sector. The PLI scheme led to a significant increase in production, employment generation, economic growth and exports in the country. As of March 2023, a tangible investment totalling ₹62,500 crore has been achieved, leading to increased production and sales exceeding ₹6.75 lakh crore, as well as the creation of approximately 325,000 jobs. Additionally, exports have seen a significant boost of ₹2.56 lakh crore by the end of the fiscal year 2022-23.

But for Raghuram Rajan, this is not economically worth it because the value of goods produced/exports doesn’t justify the subsidy given to the companies to set up their shops here and employ low-skilled assembly line workers.

To put in a nutshell, Raghuram Rajan wants government to provide subsidized education at IIMs to 250,000 people so that they can become ‘hot commodities abroad’ but doesn’t want the Indian government to subsidize manufacturing to increase India’s production, exports and jobs.

This is where one doubts his intentions. May be Dr. Subramanian Swamy was right about Raghuram Rajan not being an Indian at heart, given the fact that he is a US green-card holder.

Raghuram in his interview with Dhanya Rajendran of The New Minute goes on to compare Apple with Foxconn, to make his point.

What you wanna do is occupy the higher parts of the value chain. Think of the iPhone. Earlier on, the design, the intellectual property, the patents that go into it, which is what Apple does. Later on it is iTunes, the apps, the marketing, finance, which also Apple does with its fantastic Stores for example. That’s the high part of the value chain. What comes in between is the manufacturing. Apple hasn’t done any manufacturing since 2004. It’s all done by Foxconn. What is Apple’s value? $3 trillion. What is Foxconn’s value? It’s worth $50 billion. Apple is worth 60 times.”, he says.

Mr. Rajan, Apple has around 161,000 employees in total. Foxconn on the other hand employs over 767,000 people. Apart from Foxconn, you’ve Wistron and Pegatron. You yourself in the interview say that the biggest problem in India is jobs. Aren’t you contradicting your own statement?

He reeks of elitism when he talks about Indians dominating the space of consultancy and coding. They hardly comprise 1% of the total workforce. What about the rest of the population who may not have access to such opportunities or acquire the necessary skills? It is manufacturing that can provide a plethora of all kinds of jobs. If we get the manufacturing right, it will inevitably lead to the development of a robust services sector.

The only sensible point he makes in the interview is about freebies. Raghuram Rajan warns of the perils of untargeted freebies and the need to rationalize them (Disappointed Dhanya?)

Raghuram Rajan has come to be for GDP, what Congress leader P. Chidambaram is to digital payments. Incidentally, both of them are economists par excellence, from premier institutes. IYKYK.

For those wondering what the equivalence is about, remember how P. Chidambaram mocked Digital India in Parliament?

Go to your village fair. Buy potatoes and tomatoes. And pay ₹7.50 by credit card. What will the poor lady do? Does she have a PoS machine there? Is it connected to a electricity source? Is there wifi there? Is the internet working there?“, P. Chidambaram had ridiculed the idea of Digital India.

But the people of India proved him wrong. From small tea shops to malls, digital payments have become ubiquitous with exponential growth in digital transactions. As of 11 December 2023, UPI has recorded a total of 8,572 crore transactions in the current fiscal year.

Likewise, Raghuram Rajan’s predictions have only gone horribly wrong.

In December 2022, during his conversation with Rahul Gandhi he said that growth is going to slow and that Indian exports have been hit quite a bit.

We would be lucky if we do 5% next year”, the rockstar economist predicted.

India’s GDP growth rate rose to a pace of 7.8% y/y in the April-June quarter of 2023. His previous employer IMF has marked India as a ‘star performer’ predicting the country to contribute 16% of global growth.

So, instead of re-imagining India’s future, Raghuram Rajan should re-image his future because the former RBI Governor’s currency is on a freefall.

Kaushik is a political commentator.

“What Is He Doing? Is He An Officer?” Netizens Question Maamannan Director Mari Selvaraj Accompanying Udhayanidhi To Flood-Hit Areas

Kollywood director known for caste-based films like Maamannan, Mari Selvaraj, was seen along with DMK Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin as the latter “inspected” the flood-affected areas of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts in Tamil Nadu which have been severely impacted by the recent heavy rains.

Hailing from Tirunelveli himself, Mari Selvaraj described the challenging situation in agricultural areas near water bodies, where some villages have been completely cut off. He emphasised the difficulties in conducting rescues due to people stranded on buildings and trees, making boat access problematic. The director, along with Tamil Nadu’s Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, visited affected villages in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli, witnessing the dire conditions.

As reported in The Indian Express, Mari Selvaraj said, “No one expected such a devastating disaster here. This place is dependent on rivers. The problem with saving people is that the villages are cut off from each other. People have found refuge on top of trees and houses. So it has become hard to go in and rescue all of them. There are villages which are totally cut off where even boats can’t go in. About 12 villages are like that. They were completely cut off for the past two days. They haven’t had access to food and communication. We rarely get a message from those areas. We are working based on that. We have spoken to MP Kanimozhi and asked for helicopters to access those places. Helicopters are the only way with which these places can be reached.”

Netizens found pictures of Mari Selvaraj and Udhayanidhi Stalin circulating on the internet very reminiscent of the pictures of director Ram Gopal Varma and then Congress Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh as they inspected the 26/11 site.

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party President also questioned why Mari Selvaraj was doing the rounds while the CM was missing. He wrote on his X handle, “The CM of TN, who is expected to monitor and be on the ground to facilitate relief for the people affected by flood in the Southern districts of TN, is busy attending I.N.D.I. Alliance meeting in Delhi. The famous saying “Nero played a Fiddle while Rome burnt” comes to life with the act of Thiru MK Stalin. While Thiru @mkstalin is in Delhi, he also decides to seek an appointment with our Hon PM, a last-minute cover created to divert people from his real agenda of travel. TN CM’s son, deputed on his behalf, lands to monitor the Flood relief with a Film Director, striking similarity to a former CM of Maharashtra who brought a film producer outside Oberoi Hotel while the shooting & bombing were happening during 26/11. Relief from the State Government seems like a far-fetched dream for the people of South TN. #MissingCM”

Many questioned why he was a part of the team that was inspecting the flood situation.

https://twitter.com/ItsyourMB/status/1736999509316796609

Some even “nicknamed” him Disaster Management Minister Mari Selvaraj.

Others questioned as to why Mari Selvaraj was present while the Chief Minister was conspicuously absent – attending the I.N.D.I alliance meeting in New Delhi.

Responding to questions regarding his involvement, Mari Selvaraj clarified the “collaborative efforts” with government officials and the urgent requirement for aerial assistance in the ongoing rescue operations.

Indian Armed Forces Come To The Rescue Once Again To Help Flood-Affected South Tamil Nadu

Following the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, which severely impacted Chennai and neighboring districts, the southern districts of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin faced the brunt of heavy rainfall triggered by cyclonic circulation. The situation escalated as extremely heavy rainfall wreaked havoc, leading to widespread flooding and several casualties. The Commune received inputs from the Defence PRO and are being reproduced here.

Rescue Efforts By The Army

In response to the crisis, the Indian Army swiftly mobilised rescue operations in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin. The 21 Maratha Light Infantry from Belgaum and an Infantry Brigade from Trivandrum, a part of the 54th division, were deployed to aid in rescuing stranded individuals. Notably, the forces conducted evacuation operations in Vasaipuram, where a human chain was formed on flooded roads to evacuate those marooned.

The evacuation efforts at Vasaipuram were conducted in three lots on a challenging timeline. In the first lot, a total of 33 people including 17 women, 13 men, and 3 children were successfully evacuated. Subsequently, the second evacuation within half an hour enabled the rescue of 36 people including 11 women and a pregnant woman, 18 men, and 6 children of which one was an infant. The third evacuation, conducted an hour or so later, involved the evacuation of 64 people including 26 women, 28 men, and 10 children of which two were infants.

On 19 December 2023, the Indian Army successfully completed a rescue mission at Nanalkadu village located in Srivaikuntam taluka of Thoothukkudi district, evacuating a total of 111 people which includes 57 women, 39 men, and 15 children. The rescued individuals are now being moved to the village of Padmanabhamangalam en route to Sri Vaikuntham. Civil authorities also requested assistance for the village of Shrivaikundam, where approximately 250 people are stranded.

In response to the floods in Tamil Nadu, the Indian Air Force has deployed Medium Lift Helicopters (MLH) and Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruv for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) efforts. These helicopters are operating from Madurai in coordination with civil authorities to conduct rescue operations and supply drops. This morning, an IAF Mi-17 V5 helicopter successfully rescued four stranded individuals, including a pregnant woman and an infant aged a year and a half.

Rescue By Indian Coast Guard

Amidst the challenging situation, the Indian Coast Guard emerged as a pivotal force in aiding flood-affected areas in Southern Tamil Nadu, specifically in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. The Tamil Nadu State administration sought their assistance to rescue stranded citizens and provide essential relief materials such as food and medicine.

The Indian Coast Guard swiftly responded by deploying six Disaster Relief Teams (DRTs) for rescue and relief operations, closely coordinating with district administrations.

An Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) with an integral helicopter onboard was dispatched to monitor coastal areas and respond to emergencies. Additional assets, including a fixed-wing Dornier aircraft and an ALH helicopter, were strategically positioned at Madurai to support ongoing rescue and relief efforts.

To further enhance their capabilities, a Rescue Diver team equipped with paddle boats, and kayaks, and a Disaster Relief Team from Coast Guard Station Mandapam were deployed to Tuticorin, contributing crucial assistance to the overall rescue operations.

Amidst the evolving situation, rescue efforts of the armed forces have been at the forefront of the relief operation with units from different parts of the country coming together in a remarkable display of service to assist citizens affected by the unprecedented rains in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

Despite the diverse origins of these officers, their collective efforts, alongside the Indian Coast Guard, aim to alleviate the impact of the crisis and provide timely assistance. Unfortunately, the leftist-Dravidianist media has overlooked their commendable rescue efforts. It is crucial to highlight that in the eyes of the armed forces, linguistic differences, including knowledge or lack thereof in Hindi, play no role. Every individual, regardless of language or background, is viewed as an equal, emphasising the commitment to rescue anyone in need.

“Christian Community Has Done Excellent Work In Education & Health”: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah heaped praises on the Christian community for their “significant contributions” to healthcare and education in the state.

Siddaramaiah inaugurated the state-of-the-art linear oscillator radiation therapy service at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru during the event.

Speaking at the opening of the Linear Accelerator Radiation Therapy Service at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru on 18 December 2023, Siddaramaiah saidThe Christian community has done excellent work in the field of education and health. This community has laid a good foundation for quality education in Udupi and Mangalore. The majority of people in Indian society were deprived of literacy“.

He emphasized the importance of early cancer detection for successful treatment and highlighted the advanced linear oscillator radiation therapy service available at the hospital. Siddaramaiah also suggested that it would be more convenient for rural patients if the doctors at the hospital could communicate in Kannada.

Acknowledging the hospital’s role in providing affordable healthcare to the economically disadvantaged, he noted that while affluent individuals may visit expensive private hospitals, Baptist Hospital prioritizes offering low-cost health services to those struggling in daily life and committed to public service. The Chief Minister pledged the government’s support and cooperation to Baptist Hospital, emphasizing its role in delivering quality treatment to underserved patients similar to a government hospital.

Madras High Court Overturns DMK Minister’s Acquittal In Disproportionate Assets Case

The Madras High Court has overturned a trial court’s decision to acquit DMK Minister for Higher Education K Ponmudi in a disproportionate case initiated against him.

In response to an appeal by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), Justice G Jayachandran, on Tuesday (19 December 2023), determined that the DMK minister had accumulated assets exceeding his known sources of income by 64.9% during his tenure as Minister for Mines and Minerals in the DMK government from 2006 to 2011.

The judge scheduled the pronouncement of the sentence for December 21, 2023, and instructed Ponmudi and his wife to appear before the court on that day.

In 2016, a special court under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA) had acquitted Ponmudi and his wife P Visalatchi in the disproportionate assets case, initiated by the DVAC after the AIADMK assumed power in 2011.

The acquittal was based on the prosecution’s failure to establish the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Challenging this acquittal, the DVAC filed an appeal in 2017 before the High Court, alleging that the DMK leader had amassed ₹1.36 crore in assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Earlier the Madras High Court issued an order on 10 August 2023 that raised concerns about the manner in which District Judge Vellore had rendered a verdict acquitting DMK Minister Ponmudi and his spouse in a disproportionate assets case. Justice Anand Venkatesh utilized his suo motu revision powers to question the validity of transferring the case against the Higher Education Minister.

In a forceful and strongly-worded verdict, Venkatesh vehemently criticized the manner in which the disproportionate assets case involving Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy and his spouse P. Visalakshi was transferred from Villupuram District Court to Vellore District Court.

Justice Venkatesh stated in his order said, “It is evident that when a glaring illegality by a criminal court leads to a significant miscarriage of justice, it becomes the constitutional duty of the High Court to rectify the illegality and uphold the public’s trust in the criminal justice system.” He further emphasized that the narrative presented reveals an “alarming and deliberate effort to manipulate and undermine the criminal justice system. The perplexing and questionable transfer of the case followed by the trial and judgment by the Principal District Judge in Vellore are entirely unlawful and devoid of legal validity.

BJP Tamil Nadu leader commenting on the recent judgement said “One DMK Minister without portfolio is already in Prison on charges of Corruption & the Higher Education Minister of TN, Thiru Ponmudi, is today convicted by the Madras High Court on Corruption charges. Incidentally, I.N.D.I. Alliance, the coming together of corrupt & dynasts, is meeting today & the TN CM is attending the meeting while people in South TN are battling for their lives.

Urgent Appeal To Halt Construction On Chennai Flood Plains: TN BJP State Secretary SG Suryah Calls For Government Intervention

In a fervent plea to safeguard the lives of Chennai residents, Tamil Nadu BJP State Secretary SG Suryah has penned a compelling letter to key authorities, urging the immediate suspension of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority’s (CMDA) technical consent for a residential construction project on the city’s flood plains along the Cooum River.

Addressed to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department Secretary, Commissioner of Revenue Administration, Member Secretary of CMDA, and Chief Engineer of the Water Resource Department, Suryah’s letter draws attention to the critical findings of the V. Thirupugazh IAS Committee Report, submitted in May 2023.

The Thirupugazh committee, appointed by the Tamil Nadu Government, submitted an interim report in May 2022 and a final report in May 2023. The interim report underscores the paramount concern of Chennai’s rivers and stormwater drains reaching their maximum flood-carrying capacity, compounded by the pervasive issue of encroachments. The committee strongly recommends a prohibition on developments along flood plains and advocates for the government to devise comprehensive drainage pathways for floodwaters.

Highlighting CMDA’s controversial proposal to reclassify 11.5 acres of floodplain adjacent to the Cooum River from “Non-urban use zone” to “Residential use zone,” Suryah expressed deep concern. This area, a crucial channel for diverting floodwater into the sea, is pivotal for Chennai’s flood management.

The V. Thirupugazh IAS Committee proposed an elevation of CMDA’s land exercise by 4.325 meters, amounting to nearly 15 lakh sq.ft, as a preventive measure against future inundations. Notably, the committee emphasized that if CMDA proceeded with reclassification and construction, the realtor was unlikely to elevate the land adequately, potentially resulting in a 50 lakh sq.ft expanse susceptible to flooding.

Suryah argued that CMDA’s pursuit of the project contradicts the Thirupugazh committee’s recommendations and highlights the urgency of integrating development and disaster management in planning. He denounced CMDA’s audacious pursuit of the project, characterizing it as a potential threat to the lives and well-being of Chennai residents. He implored the Tamil Nadu government to intervene promptly and annul CMDA’s proposal, aligning with the recommendations of the V. Thirupugazh IAS Committee.

It is noteworthy that SG Suryah has been undertaking various relief works ever since Cyclone Michaung struck Chennai in the first week of December 2023.
