The Tamil Nadu government has begun the process of acquiring land for a SIPCOT industrial park at Madhuramangalam in Kancheepuram district, not far from Parandur and Eganapuram, where the previous government had proposed a greenfield airport for Chennai, as reported in DT Next.
The move comes shortly after the TVK government scrapped the Parandur greenfield airport project, which had faced strong opposition from villagers over the proposed acquisition of agricultural land.
According to a notification issued by Commissioner of Land Administration Rajesh Lakhoni, the State proposes to acquire 8.3820 hectares of land at Madhuramangalam for industrial purposes. The notification was issued under the Tamil Nadu Acquisition of Land for Industrial Purposes Act, 1997.
The land proposed to be acquired has been classified as dry land and contains neem and coconut trees, according to the notification.
“The plans of the lands are kept at the office of the Special District Revenue Officer and Special Tahsildar and may be inspected on any day during office hours,” Lakhoni said in the notification.
The land acquisition is linked to the proposed SIPCOT Maduramangalam Industrial Park, which is expected to house a semiconductor and electronics manufacturing park at an estimated cost of ₹175 crore.

The project is aimed at attracting investments in the semiconductor and electronics sectors, which have emerged as a major focus of industrial policy across States.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had announced the proposed semiconductor park in the Assembly under Rule 110. The park is expected to house semiconductor industries as well as research and development facilities.
The project is also projected to generate around 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, giving a boost to Tamil Nadu’s electronics and semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
The proposed industrial park is significant because of its location in the broader Parandur region. Madhuramangalam is located close to Parandur and Eganapuram, where residents had opposed the acquisition of their agricultural lands for the second airport for Chennai.
The airport project, pursued by the previous DMK government, had involved plans to acquire around 1,700 acres of land. Villagers in the region had mounted sustained opposition to the proposed acquisition, citing the impact on their agricultural land and livelihoods.
The TVK, then in opposition, had supported the villagers’ resistance to the airport project ahead of the Assembly election. After coming to power, the party-led government announced the cancellation of the Parandur greenfield airport project.
The government is now moving ahead with land acquisition for an industrial project in the same broader region.
