After Hindu Munnani Protest, RDO Halts Construction On Encroached Temple Land In Chennai

Construction work on land belonging to the Arulmigu Sri Suyambu Thee Panchamman Temple in Chennai’s Koyambedu has been halted following a direction from the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO), after Hindu Munnani alleged that the property had been encroached upon by Hotel Saravana Bhavan and Sriram Properties.

According to Hindu Munnani, the temple owns 1.28 acres of land, on which the two entities had allegedly undertaken construction activities. Claiming that the temple property had been illegally occupied, the organisation, along with local residents, staged a hunger strike on 26 June 2026, demanding that the alleged encroachment be stopped and the temple land be protected.

Following the protest, the police and officials of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department referred the dispute to the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) for an inquiry.

The RDO conducted an inquiry on 1 July 2026. Pending a final decision in the matter, the RDO reportedly issued notices directing Hotel Saravana Bhavan and Sriram Properties not to carry out any construction at the disputed site until further orders.

Construction work has since been stopped in compliance with the RDO’s directive.
