The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has won three key posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, with Yash Dabas elected president, Riya Chhawdi elected secretary and Lakshya Raj Singh elected joint secretary.
The election saw participation from organisations including Congress-backed NSUI and the Aam Aadmi Party, among others.
Reacting to the results, ABVP National General Secretary Dr. Virendra Singh Solanki said the outcome reflected students’ trust in the organisation’s work, ideology and organisational efforts. He claimed that ABVP workers had remained disciplined during the election despite what he described as attempts to create disturbances.
Solanki also said ABVP candidates were selected through an organisational process involving students rather than through what he described as closed-door political calculations. He interpreted the result as an indication that Delhi University students preferred social harmony over caste-based divisions and said the outcome demonstrated the importance of sustained work among students.
ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma said the result showed that Congress and its political machinery had not been able to secure success in student politics. He said student organisations ultimately depended on their work on campus, presence among students and engagement with student issues.
Newly elected DUSU president Yash Dabas said the mandate represented students’ support for social harmony, patriotism and student participation. He said the students’ union should focus on student and national issues and work beyond caste and other forms of divisive politics.
DUSU secretary Riya Chhawdi said her priorities would include student safety, better facilities, equal opportunities and a positive academic environment, with particular attention to concerns raised by women students.
Joint secretary Lakshya Raj Singh said the result placed greater responsibility on ABVP’s elected representatives to remain accessible to students and work towards resolving their concerns.
The ABVP described the DUSU result as part of what it said was a broader run of electoral successes for the organisation across universities in the country.
