Ten persons, including a police constable, have been arrested for allegedly manufacturing and selling methamphetamine from a clandestine unit operating inside an iron workshop in Ilayangudi, Sivaganga district, police said.
As reported in Dinamani, addressing reporters on Friday, 31 July 2026, Ramanathapuram Superintendent of Police G. Santheesh said the investigation began three days ago after police arrested Jebees (25) in Ramanathapuram and seized one gram of methamphetamine, a high-grade narcotic, from his possession.
Following the arrest, a special investigation team was constituted. During the probe, police identified Ahmed Aslam (22) and Mohamed Umarul (22), both residents of Karikootam near Ramanathapuram, as being linked to the drug network. They were subsequently arrested.
During interrogation, the duo allegedly revealed that methamphetamine was being manufactured inside an iron workshop in Ilayangudi.
Based on the information, police conducted a raid at the workshop and seized equipment and raw materials used for manufacturing the drug, along with methamphetamine worth approximately ₹1.5 crore that had already been produced and stored at the premises.
Police also arrested Sheikh Mohammed (38), Habibul Rahman (52), Sikandar Badusha (53), Jagir Hussain (56), Jamal Mugaideen (65), all from Ilayangudi in Sivaganga district, and Sahul Hameed (50) from Madhavaram, Chennai, in connection with the case. A police constable from another district was also arrested for his alleged involvement.
According to SP Santheesh, the accused allegedly operated the manufacturing unit between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day. They are suspected to have produced around three kilograms of methamphetamine every 15 days and sold the narcotic through their network.
The SP further said the illegal manufacturing and sale of methamphetamine had allegedly been ongoing from the Ilayangudi unit for the past one year.
He also congratulated the members of the special investigation team, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Sivasankaran, Inspector Muthukumar, and Assistant Inspector Saibul, for successfully uncovering the operation.
