A promotional clip aired by Sun TV Network-owned Adithya TV has triggered massive backlash after turning the torture endured by freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai (V.O.C.) under British rule into a comedy segment.
The controversy erupted over a teaser for an upcoming comedy game show in which the host asked participants why V.O.C. was bestowed with the title “Chekkizhutha Chemmal” – a reference to the brutal punishment he endured when the British colonial administration forced him to pull an oil press like a bullock during his imprisonment.
Instead of answering correctly, one female participant guessed that V.O.C. was a “boat driver who pulled a boat.” Another participant then drew a comparison to Duryodhana pulling Draupadi’s saree in the Mahabharata cheerharan, prompting laughter from the participants as the segment was presented as light-hearted entertainment with background laugh tracks.

The promo quickly went viral, drawing widespread condemnation from historians, members of V.O.C.’s family, social media users, and several public figures, who accused the channel of trivializing the suffering of one of Tamil Nadu’s greatest freedom fighters for the sake of entertainment.
Following the backlash, representatives associated with V.O.C.’s lineage and historical organizations reportedly approached the channel seeking an explanation.
According to those involved, Adithya TV stated that the show’s intent was to humorously gauge how much the younger generation knew about historical personalities.
Sun TV Trivializes Tamil Icons
The incident has also triggered political criticism with the Sun TV Network, owned by the Maran family and widely associated with the DMK insulting a towering figure in Tamil history merely to generate television ratings.
The episode reflected a broader trend of neglecting Tamil historical icons while glorifying select political figures.
If the objective was satire or sensational entertainment, television channels should not target national heroes who sacrificed their lives and livelihoods for India’s freedom.
Several social media users also demanded an unconditional public apology from Adithya TV, arguing that V.O.C.’s torture at the hands of the British was a painful chapter in India’s freedom struggle and not material for comedy.
