In a shocking incident that happened in Canada, the remains of 215 children were found buried at the indigenous school site which was shut down in 1978. The Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia is a school that has been shut down for several decades, and was inspected using a ground penetrating radar by the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc.
“We had a knowing in our community that we were able to verify,” Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc Chief Rosanne Casimir said in a statement. “At this time, we have more questions than answers,” it added.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reported this incident as ‘heartbreaking’, and went on to say that it is a “painful reminder of that dark and shameful chapter of our country’s history.” He also issued the order for an immediate investigation into this issue. It is to be noted that discovery was a result of a six year investigation into this, which started in 2015.
This discovery is an insight into the cultural genocide that happened to 150,000 children who attended the schools in Christian schools in Canada in the 1840s to the 1990s. Indigenous children were forcibly separated from their families and made them attend residential school which was run by Christian missionaries. The Canadian government issued an apology in 2008 for the same.
