Reports claiming that gold and silver ornaments belonging to more than 20 temples under the Neyyattinkara Devaswom group had gone missing have been rejected by the Neyyattinkara Devaswom Assistant Commissioner, who has stated that no temple valuables were lost and that the controversy arose from errors in a draft report.
According to reports that surfaced earlier this month, gold ornaments, silver ornaments, gold bars, silver Thirumughas and other valuables belonging to temples under the Neyyattinkara Devaswom Assistant Commissioner were allegedly found missing during an inspection conducted by the Thiruvabharanam Commission.
The valuables of the temples are reportedly kept in lockers at the Parassala Mahadevar Temple. Reports claimed that gold bars belonging to the Parassala Mahadevar Temple, the gold seal package of the Maryankara Temple, the gold Gopi of the Keleshwaram Temple, the Veera Chakram of the Koottappana Temple and valuables belonging to around twenty temples could not be accounted for during the inspection.
The reports were based on alleged irregularities noted during the inspection and a report submitted by the Neyyattinkara Devaswom Assistant Commissioner’s office.
However, Neyyattinkara Devaswom Assistant Commissioner Ayyappan subsequently dismissed the reports and said no temple valuables had gone missing.
Speaking to the media, he stated that the Thiruvabharanam Commission had not directly opened the lockers at the Parassala Mahadevar Temple. According to him, the Commission had sought a report regarding the valuables belonging to the sub-group temples, and inaccuracies in a draft submitted by subordinate officials had led to confusion.
He maintained that the valuables of the temples had not been lost and that no damage had occurred. He further stated that a corrected and detailed report had been sought from the concerned officials and that the position regarding the valuables would be clarified comprehensively.
The controversy comes just weeks after another dispute involving temple valuables emerged at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, where reports citing a police report alleged that certain gold items and artefacts were missing.
