Fascism Or Payasam? Joseph Vijay’s TVK Govt Arrests Woman Over Social Media Post Against HR&CE Minister, ‘Private Individuals’ Behind Palani Temple Land Grab Remain Unknown

In a development that raises fresh concerns over press freedom and political dissent in Tamil Nadu, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government under Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has arrested a woman AIADMK worker Indirani Sudala (also referred to as Indrani), an AIADMK functionary, in connection with posts targeting HR&CE Minister S. Ramesh and the handling of temple-related matters. The arrest forms part of a wider police action that has drawn accusations of overreach and selective targeting of government critics.

The controversy erupted after posts surfaced highlighting alleged irregularities involving 1.4 acres of valuable Palani Murugan Temple land, estimated to be worth nearly ₹100 crore. One individual, Vinoth Suryakumar, was arrested for claiming that relatives of Minister S. Ramesh had fraudulently registered the property in violation of existing restrictions. The Madras High Court later declared the registration invalid, and the matter is now under CB-CID probe.

Yet, while the TVK government has moved swiftly against those raising questions online, including Indirani, there has been conspicuous silence on the whereabouts and identity of the ‘private individuals’ who allegedly attempted to illegally take over the temple land. Critics are asking: Why is the full force of the state being directed at ordinary citizens and opposition voices expressing concern, rather than tracing and prosecuting those directly involved in the attempted land grab? This selective approach has only deepened suspicions. Instead of prioritising a thorough, transparent investigation into the land encroachment — a matter concerning a revered temple — the administration appears more preoccupied with silencing criticism directed at its own minister.

Indirani’s arrest fits into an emerging pattern. The recent detention of YouTuber Maridhas for critical videos against the Chief Minister and other ministers had already drawn accusations of political vendetta. By targeting a woman activist for social media posts, the Vijay government risks being seen as intolerant of even mild dissent, contradicting the image of progressive, people-friendly governance it projected during the elections.

Minister S. Ramesh, who holds the sensitive HR&CE portfolio, oversees the administration of thousands of temples and their assets. The portfolio demands the highest standards of accountability and impartiality. However, the government’s response so far — prioritising arrests of critics over clarity on the land issue — has done little to inspire public confidence.

The core issue remains unaddressed: Who are the private individuals behind the attempted takeover of Palani Murugan Temple land? Why has the TVK administration not made their identification and prosecution a priority? By focusing instead on detaining those who highlighted the matter on social media, the government gives the impression that protecting ministers from embarrassment matters more than protecting temple properties.
