“I’m Aspiring To Become PM, You’re Containing Me To Dy CM; If Modi Can, Why Not Me?”: VCK Chief Thirumavalavan Tells His Cadres Who Want Him To Become CM

"I'm Aspiring To Become PM, You're Containing Me To Dy CM; If Modi Can, Why Not Me?": VCK Chief Thirumavalavan Tells His Cadres Who Want Him To Become CM

It appears that the fire ignited by Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thirumavalavan against his alliance partner, the ruling DMK, is spiraling out of control. The idea that Thirumavalavan could be becoming Deputy or Chief Minister, along with VCK leaders securing cabinet positions in Tamil Nadu, is gaining traction among the cadres. Now, Thirumavalavan is struggling to manage the excitement within his ranks and is attempting to shift the narrative to avoid straining his relationship with the DMK, as he faces pressure from the fascist party. However, his efforts seem futile, as cadres continue chanting slogans calling Thirumavalavan to be the next Chief Minister.

Speaking at a meeting organized by the VCK’s Vellore, Ranipet, and Tiruvallur Mandals, Thirumavalavan addressed recent criticisms directed at him. He stated, “I have never spoken anywhere to break the alliance. We are simply expressing our pain, and that takes courage. We fought for Namakkal issue, we stood against the Vengai Vayal issue, and we condemned the murder of  Srimathi. Are we unaware that this could lead to controversy? We didn’t anticipate it becoming a major issue, but we are ready to face any challenge.”

Thirumavalavan reaffirming his commitment to the DMK said, “I’ve been saying this from the day one not to view this through alliances or elections. Yet, they (say), ‘No! He’s moving like this, like that, he’s going to leave the DMK, he’s spoken to Edappadi and has got Deputy Chief Minister.’ I’m aspiring to become Prime Minister, but you are saying a Deputy Chief Minister. My ambitions are different; who are you to label me as a Deputy CM? Why? Don’t I have the qualification to become Prime Minister? Should I not aspire to become a Prime Minister? If Modi can be Prime Minister of India, why shouldn’t Thirumavalavan become Prime Minister? or At-least, we will become a Deputy Prime Minister like Jagjivan Ram, that’s what our aim is. It’s as if they’re enticing us, Edappadi has spoken and agreed to give him seat. Sinthanai Selvan is going to become a minister in the cabinet. Thirumalavan will contest in the election by resigning his MP post and becoming Deputy CM.”

Thirumavalavan lamented that there is no neutrality regarding social media gossip, and Aadhav Arjun is being unfairly blamed. Aadhav wants our party to grow and embrace the ideals of Periyar and Ambedkar before joining us. Martin is a wealthy individual, and his son-in-law is Aadhav Arjun, who funded the entire “Democracy will win” conference. Despite my transparency about the financial details, some people distort the facts. They refer to him as Arjun Reddy, but he never identifies himself that way; he should simply be called Arjun, as they often use ‘Reddy’ to emphasize his Telugu heritage.

People are intentionally spreading these rumors. I have warned against allowing such divisive voices into our party. They are merely mercenaries. One might question the nature of our party, whether it is caste-based or not. VCK is a party advocating for the abolition of caste, not one that promotes caste pride. We do not uphold hereditary systems and we are not a ruling dynasty but a dynasty of knowledge. We trace our roots back to Lord Buddha, Mahatma Phule, Ambedkar, and Periyar.

Recent Political Play By Thirumavalavan

After facing prolonged criticism for remaining in the DMK alliance and not challenging the government’s injustices against scheduled castes and tribes, Thirumavalavan has recently taken a stand. He publicly criticized the DMK’s alcohol policy and announced a women’s conference aimed at abolishing alcohol and drug abuse in the state as a strategy to show protest.

Thirumavalavan Criticizes DMK, Invites AIADMK For Alcohol Prohibition Conference

On 10 September 2024, during a press conference at his party headquarters, Thirumavalavan criticized and blamed the DMK indirectly for the severe alcohol addiction in the state and Kallakuruchi hooch tragedy.

He remarked, “A country cannot become a superpower by turning everyone into an alcoholic. There is no use in welfare programs after creating alcoholics in every family, so we place these demands to the state government and central ruling union government.”

During a subsequent press briefing, Thirumavalavan stirred controversy by inviting the AIADMK to his conference. Reporters pressed him to clarify his criticism of parties that support liquor prohibition but are reluctant to act, specifically asking if he was referring to the DMK.

Thirumavalavan responded, “I’m saying to whoever is hesitant, even AIADMK is saying that (prohibition), but they have not implemented it. If they want, they can join our conference. AIADMK can also join. Any party can join. Whoever has the consensus to prohibit liquor can come.”

DMK Reaction

This statement sparked considerable unrest within the DMK alliance, prompting responses from various figures. DMK scion Udhayanidhi Stalin remarked that the VCK has the right to invite anyone they wish, stating, “They will discuss it, and participation is entirely up to them.” Meanwhile, DMK Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ma. Subramanian, assured, “There is no issue within the DMK alliance, and it will remain strong through many more elections.”

The following day, the VCK faced heightened tension as the fascist DMK, moved to remove their prominent 62-foot VCK’s flagpole. This pole had replaced the original 20-foot post erected by VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan when the party was founded. Situated in Villur, Madurai district, the flagpole was taken down by local authorities, who claimed it interfered with road extension plans.

Despite recognizing the underlying political motives behind this action, Thirumavalavan chose not to criticize the ruling DMK directly. Instead, he strongly condemned the district administration, particularly Collector M.S. Sangeetha, accusing them of deliberately targeting the VCK and its activities. Thirumavalavan stated that the issue had been escalated to the government and DMK ministers, and he anticipated a favourable resolution. This incident has prompted speculation about the VCK’s relationship with the DMK and Thirumavalavan’s next moves.

‘We Need Power Sharing’ Statement

As the situation exacerbated within their alliance, on 14 September 2024, Thirumavalavan posted a video on his official X account that quickly went viral. In the video, he stated, “A party that raised the voice for a coalition government in 2016 is Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. Cabinet should be shared, not merely seat share but we need power share. I don’t know the history of whether previous organizations have discussed it… Power sharing is different from seat sharing. To ask for a seat in the cabinet is power sharing, and to participate in the coalition is ‘seat sharing’. Some 4 or 5 seats will be allocated in that, too, power comes individually. Power sharing means that I also want to share in the power.”

Meeting With Stalin

Thirumavalavan and other VCK leaders met Chief Minister MK Stalin at the DMK headquarters (Anna Arivalayam) to address several key issues. Following the meeting, Thirumavalavan told the press that a major topic of discussion was the VCK’s upcoming anti-liquor conference scheduled for 2 October 2024, in Kallakurichi, which aims to advocate for total alcohol prohibition. He emphasized his party’s commitment to prohibition and reminded Stalin that both DMK founder C.N. Annadurai and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had supported this cause.

What was surprising was Thirumavalavan’s shift in stance. Despite his previous strong advocacy for a complete liquor ban, he now reported that Stalin had agreed only to reduce sales. Thirumavalavan also mentioned that he had asked the DMK for support in pursuing a national liquor ban as outlined in Article 47 of the Indian Constitution. Stalin reportedly assured that DMK representatives would attend the 2 October conference and that the state government would consider a phased implementation of prohibition.

Setting Up Missionary Task Force To Abolish Alcohol And Drugs In TN

On 18 September 2024, VCK chief Thirumavalavan surprised everyone by sharing his decision to set up a task force to coordinate Christian organizations for the upcoming Women’s Conference aimed at abolishing Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the state.

Thirumavalavan via his official X account, announced the controversial decision, stating, “Women’s Conference on eradicating Alcohol and Drug Abuse. The Task Force for Coordinating Christian Organizations is set up as follows.” He also included a list of members from the Christian committee, comprising nine reverends and five pastors from various churches, including CSI, ESI, and TELC.

34 Years of Silent Deepavali: Purnima Kothari Speaks To The Commune On Losing Her Brothers For Ram Mandir & Celebrating A Dream Realized

Purnima Kothari poses with her brothers' photo.

Purnima Kothari won’t celebrate Deepavali well this year. She hadn’t celebrated it since 1990, when her brothers Ram and Sharad Kothari sacrificed their lives for the Ram mandir in Ayodhya. We caught up with her. She kindly agreed to share her views with us, even though memories of her siblings made her choke with tears while talking.

It has been 34 years, but it is evident that time hasn’t fully healed her wounds.

We asked her if she would do something unique this Deepavali.

It will be nothing special. I haven’t been celebrating Deepavali since the 90s. This year, it will be a simple affair, too. I will be very much at home, and my daughter will celebrate with her friends in the neighbourhood.

However, she did celebrate Deepavali this year on January 22 when Prabhu Ram finally came to his janmasthaan in Ayodhya.

You won’t believe it, but it was after 35 years that I celebrated with crackers and diyaas. My daughter and I lit lamps in Ayodhya as if it were Deepavali. I can never forget that day.”

The last time Purnima Kothari joyfully celebrated the festival was in October 34 years ago with her two brothers and parents. She is the only person alive who remembers that day.

The Kothari Siblings (L-R) - Sharad, Purnima and Ram Kothari

Shortly after the Deepavali in 1990, Purnima’s brothers left to do Karseva in Ayodhya and promised to return before her wedding, planned for December. Purnima, then a shy and introverted 19-year-old woman, wanted to go with them, but they didn’t let her. Her doting brothers firmly told her she had to stay back and care for their parents.

It wasn’t easy for the Kothari brothers to reach Ayodhya for the karseva then. Their path was fraught with obstacles. Under the orders of then Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Uttar Pradesh government had cancelled all train and bus services, erected barricades, and imposed a strict curfew.

The karsevaks took many strenuous routes through jungles and rivers to reach Ayodhya. On October 30, 1990, after a sadhu commandeered a police vehicle filled with detained karsevaks and drove through the barricades to reach the Ram Janmabhoomi site, Sharad Kothari quickly climbed the domes, hoisted the saffron flag and reclaimed it as a place of Hindu worship.

Security forces opened fire on the Hindu demonstrators, leading to the tragic deaths of many people. Ram and Sharad, aged 22 and 20, took shelter in a house.

The next day, a sabha (gathering) was convened to brief the karsevaks on the plan for November 2, which also marked the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima. The karsevaks devised a strategy for a peaceful yet potent expression of their devotion and defiance. They were to chant ‘Ram naam’ and march towards the Janmabhoomi. If police stopped them, they should sit down on the spot and sing Ram bhajans.

On November 2 afternoon, while hiding in a house, Sharad heard a gentle knock on the door asking for water. He assumed it was a karsevak needing help.

When Sharad opened the door, he discovered it was the police who dragged him outside, shot him in the chest and tried to pull away his body. When his elder brother Ram came running to the scene, he was shot in the head from point-blank range. Both brothers died on the spot.

Purnima’s world changed overnight. When she heard the news, she knew her life had changed forever.

She called off her wedding and wanted to join the same cause as her brothers. Her parents supported this wish and cancelled the wedding. Till Babri was demolished in 1992, they participated in every karseva in Ayodhya. She married many years after a temporary temple for Ram Lalla came up at the Janmsthaan.

Her parents never regretted letting their young, unmarried sons go for karseva on that fateful day. They remained fiercely proud till their last days that their sons sacrificed their lives for Prabhu Shree Ram.

My world changed overnight. I still can’t believe how things suddenly changed my life forever.  It was my parents, and my Sankalp that we would always participate in any karseva at Ram Mandir. Till Babri fell, my father went to every event there. Even if there were a rumour or light talk about something at Janmasthaan, he would get ready to show up there with the family.”

It isn’t easy for her to talk about those memories. She chokes in tears while talking about her family. She says she and her parents had given up any hope that a grand Ram Mandir would come at the janmsthaan in their lifetimes.

“I never thought I would be able to see Prabhu Ram at his janmsthaan in Ayodhya in my lifetime. The way things were before 2014, we had given up all hope. My parents died yearning for the Ram Mandir. They held on to the dream but died without seeing it come true. We even started doubting if my brothers’ sacrifice went in vain.

But my illusions were thankfully shattered this January. It happened right before my own eyes in my lifetime. I can’t even begin to describe my feelings during Pran Prathishtha. It was a big deal for me. I was among the 7000 people invited to the event. Everybody was crying when Ram Lalla appeared, including the cameramen. I am an ordinary person, but the people sitting next to me were the creme of the society. They were also getting emotional. “

Purnima Kothari speaks about January 22 as if it were yesterday, and her voice lights up.

There was something divine in the air. The second I stepped on the sacred soil, I could feel Amrit Varsha on me. I am very fortunate that I was able to witness that grand ceremony in my lifetime. I still don’t have words to describe what I saw that day. Ayodhya was different that day. It was as if I was in dev lok.

Purnima Kothari, however, did not go there just as an attendee. She did sewa there for 15 days with her daughter under the banner of ‘Ram Sharad Kothari Smriti Sangh’ to provide tea and snacks to the devotees and the police personnel deployed nearby. This sewa shivir is a part of The Ram Sharad Kothari Smriti Sangh in Kolkata, which she founded in memory of her brothers. This organisation has about 80 members who joined her in this sewa shivir in Ayodhya.

Did she ever feel that the larger Hindu community outside Ayodhya and Uttar Pradesh has not recognised the sacrifices of her brothers?

Purnima says she always had the support of the wider Hindu community. “People used to invite us and honour us across the country after my brothers died. We have visited Kerala, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and many other states for tribute ceremonies. So many people have prayed for our family.

We ask her about her recent foray into social media. Purnima Kothari has an X and Instagram account operated mainly by her daughter, Yashaswini.

Only when I came on X did I realise how many people were still talking about my brothers. Many saw my presence on social media and insisted that families of Ram Mandir heroes should also be invited to the Pran Pratishtha ceremony.

Purnima Kothari is grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for making the Ram Mandir a reality without violence and setbacks.

I am so happy that Modi ji and Yogi ji paved the way for the Ram Mandir. I respect him so much that I am willing to wash his feet. It is one thing to see the temple getting made finally. It is another thing to make it happen without violence, within time, and without street riots. People don’t realize what a huge deal it is.

If he managed the affairs in the centre, Yogi Ji handled the situation in the state. Many people are not aware of his involvement in the Ram Mandir movement. He has played an important role, too. And look how well he is managing Uttar Pradesh. Thanks to them, I have seen my biggest life dream come true before my own eyes. Even my family and I gave up on seeing Ram Mandir, but they didn’t give up.

How does she feel when some political parties in southern states question the existence of Lord Rama and abuse him for vote bank appeasement?

“I don’t understand how people can prioritise politics over their deities. What kind of politics is this, and how can these people say vile things about their deity? No other place can claim the kind of connection that Southern India has with Prabhu Shree Ram. Look at Ram Setu, Rameshwaram, and so many places where Ramayan happened. Prabhu prayed in Rameshwaram to defeat Raavan, yet some politicians say that Lord Ram is the only god of north Indians.”

But we live in such times that those in our fold betray us most. Hindus are pulling down other Hindus. Some Hindus should be ashamed to talk poorly about their Aaradhya to stay in power. I have seen such statements from much earlier. The Congress party used to say such things about Lord Ram, and now other parties are copying them. There is nothing new in this kind of politics.

Even though Purnima Kothari has sacrificed a lot to see the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, she is quite proud of passing on to her daughter the same devotion that her parents and brothers had.

“My daughter Yashaswini was and continues to be deeply involved in many events in Ayodhya, including the sewa shivir we held there. She takes care of my commitments, helps me manage my interviews, and is excited to participate in every event, even the bhoomi poojan. She proudly told her friends that she was going to the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, and they were delighted for her, too. I am proud of her commitment to the Ram Mandir cause.”

Over 50 Members Of Indu Makkal Katchi Taken Into Custody By Police For Protesting India-Bangladesh Cricket Match In Chepauk, Chennai

The Indu Makkal Katchi staged a protest near Dams Road, off Anna Salai, on Thursday, demanding that the Indian Cricket Council (ICC) cancel the ongoing India and Bangladesh Test match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk. The protesters stated that Hindus were being targeted and attacked in Bangladesh, citing numerous violent incidents.

The protest follows recent political unrest in Bangladesh after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5 amid student protests and widespread violence aimed at dethroning her. Despite Bangladesh’s President Mohammad Shahabuddin appointing Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus to lead an interim government, the Hindu Makkal Katchi alleged that attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh have continued.

Led by Indu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath, the protesters gathered near Dams Road, raising slogans against Bangladesh. Although Chennai police refused to allow the demonstration close to the stadium, the protesters continued near their designated location, prompting traffic diversions on Anna Salai near Bata Point.

A heavy police presence was deployed around the protest site, with barricades placed to prevent the demonstrators from marching towards the stadium. It was reported later that more than 50 Hindu activists from the party including Arjun Sampath have been taken into custody by the Tamil Nadu Police for protesting against the India-Bangladesh cricket match.

The party had earlier stated that they would not allow the match to take place in Chennai.

“Were Our Forefathers Playing Pallanguzhi & Goli?”, Asks NTK Chief Seeman On Overemphasis Of EVR’s ‘Sole’ Role In Fighting Injustice In TN

"Were Our Forefathers Playing Pallanguzhi & Goli?", Asks NTK Chief Seeman On Overemphasis Of EVR's 'Sole' Role In Fighting Injustice In TN

Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator Seeman has voiced his strong displeasure with the portrayal of E.V. Ramasamy Naicker (EVR), known as Periyar to his followers, as the sole figure behind every achievement in Tamil Nadu. He questioned whether, while Periyar fought against injustice, other leaders were merely playing games like pallanguzhi and goli in the state.

This strong criticism arises against the backdrop of Kollywood actor and Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s visit to Periyar Thidal, where he paid his respects to EVR barefoot to commemorate his 146th birth anniversary on 17 September 2024. This event has ignited considerable backlash in both social and political circles, becoming a contentious topic of debate.

In this context, Seeman, chief coordinator of Naam Tamilar Katchi, addressed a press conference in Pudukkottai. When asked if he was waiting for actor Vijay to form an alliance with him, he firmly dismissed the idea, stating he has a clear path and goal ahead. He emphasized that any potential alliance would be based on those who accept his vision, explicitly ruling out collaboration with any Dravidian parties. Seeman questioned whether Vijay would acknowledge their leader Prabhakaran, suggesting that if Vijay is willing to embrace their politics, he would be welcome; otherwise, he should pursue his own path.

Seeman stated, “Let’s evaluate Vijay’s ideology and policies once he reveals them. Is Vijay’s garlanding of Ambedkar welcome? Certainly, as is honoring Periyar. However, he should also pay tribute to Thiru. V. Kalyanasundaram and recognize great leaders like Rettamalai Srinivasan. This acknowledgment must be ongoing. We must also remember figures such as Muthuramalinga Thevar, Immanuel Sekaran, Pulithevan, Velunachiyar, and the Maruthu Pandiyar. While we regard Ambedkar as wise, we must also honor leaders like Rettamalai Srinivasan, M.C. Rajah, and Iyothee Thass. A true leader should embody the legacy of their predecessors.”

A reporter then asked Seeman for his thoughts on DMK organizational secretary R.S. Bharathi’s statement that politics in Tamil Nadu cannot occur without mentioning name of EVR. Seeman, visibly agitated, challenged this notion, asking, “Whether our politics working or not? Did Jayalalitha speak of Periyar daily?” He continued, “We do not see Periyar as an enemy of Tamil Nationalism, but we also do not accept him as the leader of Tamil Nationalism, that’s our principle. Here’s how you should say ‘Periyar also fought for the abolition of caste, women’s rights, against untouchability, and abolishing superstitious beliefs.’ We agree that Periyar’s also fought for these, we accept not against it. However, (if you claim) only Periyar fought for these, we will not accept, and we are against it. I think you understand this.” Then Seeman questioned, “Did you think that our fathers and great-grandfathers were playing pallanguzhi and goli back then?”

Seeman then quoted Thiruvalluvar’s Kural, questioning whether there is anything beyond his philosophy and commonality. He further challenged the reporters by asking what they have done for Muthuramalinga Thevar, arguing that portraying him as a casteist has undermined Tamil pride, solely in favor of promoting EVR.

Woman’s Dismembered Body Found In Suitcase In Chennai, Man Arrested; Questions Raised About Law & Order In TN

Woman’s Dismembered Body Found In Suitcase In Chennai, Man Arrested; Questions Raised About Law & Order In TN

In a horrifying crime that has sent shockwaves through the southern suburbs of Chennai, the dismembered body of a woman was found stuffed inside a suitcase near Thoraipakkam on Thursday, 18 September 2024. The victim has been identified as Deepa, also known as Vellaiammal, aged 32, from Madhavaram. The police have arrested a suspect, Manikandan, 25, from Sivaganga district, in connection with the gruesome murder.

Residents of the Kumaran Kudil area near Mettukuppam in Thoraipakkam first noticed a foul smell emanating from a suitcase on the roadside on Thursday morning. Suspecting something unusual, they alerted the local police. The Thoraipakkam police promptly arrived at the scene and opened the suitcase, revealing a woman’s severed body parts. Chennai Police confirmed that they recovered the body around 9:30 a.m. The deceased was later identified as Deepa, who was reported missing from the Madavaram area three days prior.

The police and forensic experts secured the area and began investigating the scene. Preliminary inquiries, supported by CCTV footage from the vicinity, led to the identification of Manikandan, who was seen abandoning the suitcase in the area. Further investigation revealed that Deepa had been involved in sex work and had come to Thoraipakkam through an intermediary. According to the police, Manikandan had hired Deepa for sex work, but an argument broke out over payment, leading him to murder her in a fit of rage.

The police investigation found that Manikandan had killed Deepa, dismembered her body, and stuffed it into the suitcase before dumping it on the roadside. He was staying in a house nearby and was apprehended by the police after being identified through CCTV footage. Manikandan confessed to the crime during interrogation, confirming that the argument over payment led him to commit the murder. The police are still probing further details, including the role of the intermediary who brought Deepa to the area.

The discovery of the woman’s body has caused widespread shock in the usually bustling IT corridor of Chennai, where the crime occurred. Chennai Deputy Commissioner CP Chakraborty and Adyar Deputy Commissioner Ponkarthikumar arrived at the scene to oversee the investigation. Police officials have indicated that they are looking into the events leading up to the murder and collecting further evidence from the crime scene.

The body has been sent for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Forensic experts are also examining the suitcase and other evidence gathered at the scene to reconstruct the sequence of events. The police are actively pursuing the case to uncover any additional information, and Manikandan remains in custody for further questioning.

The gruesome nature of the crime has raised concerns about safety in the area, particularly in light of the ongoing construction projects and increasing foot traffic. Residents have expressed fear and dismay over the incident, which has attracted significant attention due to the disturbing manner in which the body was discovered.

This crime has unfolded amid criticism from the opposition regarding rising crime rates in the state, and accusations that the ruling DMK government has refuted. In a statement to the media, the Chennai police assured the public that they are conducting a thorough investigation and have arrested the primary suspect in connection with the case.

“Loudspeakers Harmful For Ganesh Festival Are Harmful For Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi Too”, Says Bombay HC

"Loudspeakers Harmful For Ganesh Festival Are Harmful For Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi Too", Says Bombay HC

On Wednesday, 18 September 2024, the Bombay High Court made a significant observation, asserting that if the use of loudspeakers and sound systems beyond permissible sound limits is harmful during the Ganesh festival, it is equally harmful during Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi processions.

A two-judge bench consisting of Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar was hearing multiple public interest litigations (PILs) that called for a ban on the use of “DJs,” “dance,” and “laser lights” during Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi processions. The petitioners requested the court to direct civic bodies and police to stop issuing permissions for high-decibel sound systems during the celebration, citing concerns over noise pollution.

The petitioners argued that neither the Quran nor the Hadith prescribes using DJ systems or laser lights to observe Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi. They urged the court to include Eid in its earlier order concerning noise restrictions during the Ganesh festival.

Referring to its order from August, the bench highlighted that the ban on loudspeakers and sound systems exceeding permissible noise limits during festivals applies to all public celebrations. The Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 govern the permissible noise levels. In response to the petitioners’ request to add Eid specifically to the order, the court remarked that it was unnecessary, as the earlier ruling already applied to public festivals in general.

“If it is harmful during Ganesh Chaturthi, it is harmful during Eid also,” the court asserted while disposing of the petitions.

Regarding the petitioners’ concerns over laser lights, the court demanded scientific evidence to substantiate claims that such lights harm human health. The bench criticized the lack of research, stating, “How do we adjudicate such an issue unless it is proved scientifically that it causes harm to humans?”

Justice Upadhyaya and Justice Borkar emphasized that proper research should be conducted before filing PILs, as the courts rely on well-researched arguments to make informed decisions. “We are not experts. We do not know the ‘L’ of laser,” the bench remarked, underscoring the need for assistance from petitioners in providing relevant evidence.

The case mirrored a similar petition heard by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, 17 September 2024. In that hearing, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra refused to entertain a petition to regulate laser lights and loudspeakers during festivals. The Supreme Court upheld a Bombay High Court ruling from April 2024, which had dismissed a PIL challenging the use of sound systems and laser lights in religious processions.

Both courts emphasized the responsibility of citizens to file complaints with local authorities if they believe noise pollution regulations are being violated. Rather than imposing blanket bans, the courts stated that complaints should be handled on a case-by-case basis, with authorities taking action based on the established noise pollution rules.

Pakistan Defence Minister Says Congress-NC And Pakistan Are On Same Page To Reinstate Article 370 In Jammu & Kashmir

Pakistan Defence Minister Says Congress-NC And Pakistan Are On Same Page To Reinstate Article 370 In Jammu & Kashmir

Shehbaz Sharif’s administration in Pakistan and the Congress-National Conference alliance share a similar stance on reinstating Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, their Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said. His comments come as the region approaches its first Assembly elections since the revocation of its special status in 2019.

In an interview with Geo News, Asif mentioned a “strong possibility” that the Congress-National Conference coalition might win the elections and form a government in the Union Territory.

The alliance has made the restoration of Article 370 a key election issue. Pakistan and the Congress-National Conference alliance are aligned on reinstating Articles 370 and 35A in Jammu and Kashmir.”

While the National Conference has pledged to work towards restoring Article 370, the Congress has remained silent on the issue, not addressing it in their manifesto. However, the Congress has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring full statehood.

Congress Manifesto

The manifesto said it is the Congress’s “sacred duty” to fight “divisive forces.” For doing that, the party has no problem cooperating with like-minded political parties.

In the manifesto, the party neither supported the abrogation of Article 370 nor backed its restoration. However, it promised to re-establish the Legislative Council, which was abolished after the abrogation of Article 370. It vowed to hold panchayat and urban bodies elections under the 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments.

The Congress promised to provide inclusive and accountable governance. They pledged to restore the 149-year-old practice of shuttling government offices between Srinagar and Jammu cities every six months. It vowed to give preference to domiciled citizens of J&K for government jobs. The party also promises to bring a white paper on corruption and set up Lokayukta within the first 100 days of coming to power.

“No Matter How Strict A Police Officer You Put There, They Will Be Beaten Up”, Karnataka HC Judge On Reality Of Muslim-Dominated Locality Gori Palya In Bengaluru

"No Matter How Strict A Police Officer You Put There, They Will Be Beaten Up", Karnataka HC Judge On Reality Of Muslim-Dominated Locality Gori Palya In Bengaluru

In a recent court session, Karnataka High Court Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda made very straightforward remarks while addressing law enforcement challenges in Gori Palya, a Muslim-majority area in west Bengaluru. The judge referred to the area asPakistanduring a discussion about police difficulties in maintaining order in that region.

The comments came as Justice Srishananda spoke about traffic and law enforcement issues near the Mysore Road flyover, explicitly mentioning the locality of Gori Palya. He said, Go to Mysore Road flyover, every auto rickshaw has 10 people. It is not applicable because the Mysore flyover head left to the market from Gori Palya is in Pakistan, not in India. This is the reality. No matter how strict a police officer you put there, they will be beaten up there. No channel will show this.”

A video clip of the judge’s remarks has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread discussion. The judge suggested that police officers often hesitate to act due to fear of retaliation in these areas.

The remarks have drawn attention to concerns over the law-and-order situation in Bengaluru, with some attributing the issues to alleged political mismanagement. Critics of the ruling Congress government have accused the party of engaging in appeasement politics and failing to address problems in Muslim-majority areas like Gori Palya and Bengaluru City Market.

AP CM Chandrababu Naidu Alleges Animal Fat Used In Prasadam Preparation At TTD, YSRCP Leader Jagan Refutes Allegations; TTD Had Earlier Rejected Adulterated Ghee From Supplier

In a series of controversial remarks, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu accused the previous YSR Congress (YSRCP) government of using substandard ingredients, including animal fat, in the preparation of Tirupati laddus—a revered offering at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala. This claim has sparked a heated political and religious debate, with significant implications for Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSRCP.

Chandrababu Naidu’s Allegations Against YSRCP

Speaking at a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting in Mangalagiri, Naidu alleged that the sacred Tirupati laddus were compromised in quality during YSRCP’s tenure. He claimed that instead of pure cow ghee, the YSRCP administration used animal fat, a deviation that he termed asacrilegeagainst Lord Venkateswara in Tirupati. Naidu emphasized that the quality of the laddu had deteriorated and that steps taken under his government had restored the sanctity of the offering.

Naidu asserted that Tirumala’s significance extends beyond Andhra Pradesh to Hindus globally. He said, It is our bounden duty to protect the sacredness of Tirumala and Lord Venkateswara.According to him, the situation has improved under his government, which now ensures the use of pure ghee and maintains high hygiene standards.

Jagan Reddy’s Rebuttal

The YSRCP swiftly rejected Naidu’s allegations. YV Subba Reddy, a Rajya Sabha member and former chairman of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the governing body responsible for the temple, condemned Naidu’s statements asmalicious.Reddy accused Naidu of damaging the sanctity of the temple and undermining the faith of millions of Hindus. Reddy further challenged Naidu to take an oath, along with his family, to confirm the accuracy of his accusations.

Reddy emphasized that the YSRCP government had taken no such steps to compromise the sacredness of the offerings at the temple. According to him, Naidu’s claims were politically motivated and aimed at gaining mileage in the forthcoming elections.

The Issue Of Ghee Quality

The controversy over the quality of ghee used in preparing the Tirupati laddus has gained significant attention. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), under whose purview the temple functions, has been vigilant about the quality of ingredients used for the prasadam (temple offerings). According to official reports, the TTD has rejected several batches of substandard ghee supplied to the temple.

From July 2022 to June 2023, the TTD rejected 42 truckloads of cow ghee for failing to meet the stringent standards set by the temple. These truckloads, each carrying 18 tons of ghee, were tested for moisture content, free fatty acids, and refractive index, among other quality measures. The ghee samples were sent to the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), and non-compliance with the tender norms resulted in the blacklisting of a supplier.

TTD Executive Officer (EO) J Syamala Rao confirmed that after laboratory testing, it was discovered that ghee provided by one of the five suppliers had been adulterated with vegetable oils. This substandard ghee was returned, and the supplier was blacklisted for violating tender guidelines. Rao warned that stern action would be taken against future violations, emphasizing that only the highest-quality cow ghee would be accepted.

To ensure the continued quality of the offerings, TTD has implemented strict protocols. Each consignment of ghee undergoes rigorous testing before it is accepted, with standards focusing on moisture content, fatty acid composition, and melting points, among other criteria. Trucks delivering ghee must maintain a temperature between 60 to 70 degrees Celsius to ensure freshness.

TTD has also established a high-level committee consisting of dairy experts and scientists to review the mechanisms involved in procuring and using ghee in the temple. To further streamline the process, in July 2024, TTD stated that it planned to set up an in-house Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) certified laboratory at Tirumala to eliminate the need for sending samples for external testing, ensuring quicker results and smoother operations.

India Abstains From UNGA Resolution Demanding Israeli Withdrawal From Occupied Palestinian Territories

India Abstains From UNGA Resolution Demanding Israeli Withdrawal From Occupied Palestinian Territories

India has abstained from a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution calling for Israel to end its “unlawful presence” in the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months. The resolution passed on Wednesday requires Israel to withdraw from these areas within the following year.

Initiated by Palestinian representatives, the resolution received 124 votes in favour, while 43 countries chose not to cast a negative vote, allowing the measure to pass. However, 15 nations, including Israel and the United States, voted against the resolution.

The resolution also references a non-binding advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in July, which declared the occupation and Israeli settlements unlawful. Although non-binding, this resolution urges Israel to comply with the specified timeline for withdrawal.

In addition, it calls for a boycott and arms embargo against Israel, urging all parties to refrain from supplying arms and to halt imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements due to concerns about their use in the Palestinian territories. This marks the first resolution on Palestine drafted since the Palestinians gained broader rights recognition from the United Nations.
