Don’t You Have Any Shame Left: Pralhad Joshi To Siddaramaiah On Withdrawing Hubballi Riot Case

A day after the Congress government in Karnataka announced the withdrawal of the Hubbali riots case, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Saturday slammed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, saying, “Doesn’t he have any shame, respect, or dignity left?” Talking to reporters, the Union Minister said, “They will support terrorists for votes. They won’t hesitate to back terrorists. CM Siddaramaiah has made a statement in this regard while in power. That power is given by the people, and it should be used with discretion.”

He further added, “Once, you (Congress) won 400 seats. What is your state now? To this day, you haven’t crossed 100 seats in the Lok Sabha. The reason for this is your policy of appeasement. The soft corner for certain groups is pursued even after the residence of a Dalit legislator was burnt in Bengaluru. What did they say about the KG Halli and DJ Halli violence? To be in power, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is blindly offering total support to Islamic fundamentalist forces.” “You said innocents were arrested in the Hubballi riot case. Do you believe those who pelted stones at the police station were innocent?” the Union Minister said.

Earlier, he said: “The Supreme Court, High Court and trial courts have denied bail to the accused in this case. Despite opposition from the police and judiciary, the Congress government’s decision to withdraw the case is a clear move to support the rioters.” “The Old Hubballi riot case is a fight against anti-national and anti-social elements. It’s a battle to uphold the Constitution and law,” he said. The Congress government in Karnataka has decided to withdraw the cases related to the Hubballi police station riot, in which more than 150 people were charged for attacking the police in 2022.

Following a WhatsApp post on Islam, an angry mob in Hubballi attacked the police station, damaged 10 police vehicles, and assaulted a police inspector and six other officers. The police arrested 152 individuals in connection with the violence and lodged 12 cases regarding the incident.

Show The Door To Non-Performers: PM Modi Tells Union Secretaries

Show The Door To Non-Performers: PM Modi Tells Union Secretaries

‘Shape up or ship out’ was effectively Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to the non-performers and corrupt officers in government departments during his recent interaction with the central ministers and Union Secretaries. PM Modi instructed the Union Secretaries to evaluate employees and take decisive action against underperformers and tainted officers in accordance with established rules, said sources.

Notably, the Fundamental Rule 56 (j) of the CCS (Pension) Rules empowers the authorities to retire any government servant in the public interest, if it finds him or her to be unfit for retention in service. PM Modi asked the Union Secretaries to conduct rigorous assessments of government servants and also take action, including retiring any employee “in the public interest”. In case of early and ‘forced’ retirement, the employee will be entitled to a three-month notice or compensation in the form of salary and allowances equivalent to that period.

The meeting reportedly took place a day after the Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir election results. Addressing the ministers and secretaries, PM Modi also said that good governance and development efforts do get recognised and rewarded by the people, alluding to the BJP’s success in Haryana and its strong showing in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources further said that PM Modi told the secretaries to crack the whip and convey the message down the ranks that the employees will have to demonstrate performance and address people’s issues. The Prime Minister also urged the top bureaucrats and ministers to ensure that issues and grievances of people are promptly addressed and acted upon rather than shuffling the files between desks.

PM Modi further suggested a ‘Janta Darbar’ model for Secretaries, where they could review people’s grievances once a week, while the entire process being overseen by the respective ministers. According to reports, those above 55 years of age or those having completed 30 years in service will be largely affected by this, if their assessment turns negative and could be shown the door. The move, intended at ramping up the government’s performance, has already seen many officers getting axed in the recent past. Reports suggest that more than 500 officers have been compulsorily retired via the above-mentioned rule.

Secretaries also impressed upon the Prime Minister about the shortcomings of the current employee evaluation mechanism, which primarily relies on some conventional parameters and not any ranking system. As per the prevailing mechanism, most employees manage to get above-benchmark ratings from their seniors and thus make themselves eligible for promotion rather than making them accountable, a leading daily reported.

India Slams Bangladesh Over Desecration Of Hindu Temples, Following Theft Of Kali Temple Crown

India Slams Bangladesh Over Desecration Of Hindu Temples, Following Theft Of Kali Temple Crown

A day after the theft of Goddess Kali’s crown from a temple in Bangladesh, India expressed “serious concern” on 12 October 2024, regarding the ongoing desecration and damage to Hindu temples and deities in the neighboring country, describing the recent events as “deplorable.”

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement that, “We have noted with serious concern the attack on a Puja mandap in Tantibazar, Dhaka and the theft at the revered Jeshoreshwari Kali temple at Satkhira. These are deplorable events. They follow a systematic pattern of desecration and damage to temples and deities that we have witnessed over several days now.”

“We call upon the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities and their places of worship, especially during this auspicious festival time,” it added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted the Goddess  Kali’s crown to Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple at Satkhira in 2021 during his visit to Bangladesh. The temple is revered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas spread across India and neighbouring countries.

“We have seen reports of theft of the crown gifted by PM Modi to Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple (Satkhira) in 2021 during his visit to Bangladesh. We express deep concern and urge Govt of Bangladesh to investigate theft, recover the crown and take action against the perpetrators,” the High Commission of India in Bangladesh stated on 11 October 2024.

The Hindu community in Bangladesh has been targeted repeatedly after the formation of the interim government in Dhaka under the leadership of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus following the unceremonious ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August. Analysts believe that the key conspirators behind these incidents are certain radical Islamists from Jamaat-e-Islami who want to turn Bangladesh into a Shariah-ruled country. Even though Abul Fayez Muhammad Khalid Hossain, the Advisor for Religious Affairs in the interim government, had assured that people who are found guilty of committing such “heinous acts” will be punished by the current regime, the attacks on Hindus have only increased over the past few weeks.

NIA Commences Probe Into TN Train Accident

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has initiated a probe into the Tamil Nadu train accident in which 19 people were injured. An NIA team arrived at the site where the Mysore-Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with a stationary freight train.

Police said a possible sabotage angle is being investigated, prompting the arrival of the NIA team. Twelve coaches of the express train were derailed in the accident on Friday.

The Government Railway Police of Korukkupet have registered a case. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin criticised the Union Government, saying the latter should take steps to prevent train accidents.

Southern Railway General Manager R N Singh remarked that the Mysore-Darbhanga Express entering the loop line, despite signals being set for the main line, was “unusual”.

After visiting the accident site, Singh interacted with the media and reiterated that the situation was unusual, with the train diverting to the loop line even though it was supposed to follow the main line.

Sources within the Railways told IANS that the incident occurred due to a signal failure. Train No. 12578, the Mysore-Darbhanga Express, had been given a green signal to pass through the main line.

However, while travelling at 75 km/h, the train entered the loop line and collided with the rear of a stationary goods train. At 8.27 p.m., the express train crossed Ponneri railway station and was cleared to proceed to the next station, Kavaraipettai, via the main line.

A statement from Southern Railway said, “While entering Kavaraipettai station, the train crew experienced a heavy jerk, and instead of continuing onto the main line as signalled, the train diverted to the loop line at 75 km/h and collided with the goods train.” Railway officials confirmed that the crew remained unharmed, and the fire in the parcel van was put out. “No casualties have been reported so far, some people were injured. All injured passengers have been taken to nearby hospitals,” an official stated.

Train movement on both sides of the section has been affected, and alternative arrangements are being made for passenger transportation.

Protests Erupt Over Misrepresentation Of Kovilpatti Government School In Rajini-Starrer “Vettaiyan” Made By Director Infamous For Misrepresentation

Protests Erupt Over Misrepresentation Of Kovilpatti Government School In Rajini-Starrer "Vettaiyan" Made By Director Infamous For Misrepresentation

The movie “Vettaiyan,” starring Rajinikanth, has faced severe backlash on social media for being a potential flop and propaganda film. On the other hand, Kovilpatti saw protests erupting against the film’s screening, leading to clashes between locals and theater owners, stirring significant unrest.

Released globally on 10 October 2024, “Vettaiyan” has drawn criticism for its portrayal of a government school in Gandhi Nagar, Kovilpatti, prompting a formal complaint at the Kovilpatti East Police Station. Residents from the Gandhinagar area staged a blockade at the Kovilpatti Lakshmi Theater, demanding the removal of the contentious scenes or the cessation of the “Vettaiyan” screening.

The police intervened to mediate the situation, and the protestors agreed to stand down after being assured that their concerns would be addressed. Tensions escalated in Kovilpatti when local women confronted theatre management, insisting on stopping the “Vettaiyan” screening. In response to one theatre executive’s remark about political affiliations, “Whoever you vote for, he is the one who has taken this film and released it,” the women asserted, “We will vote for whoever we choose; stop misrepresenting our children’s school.

“Vettaiyan” boasts a notable cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Manju Warrier, Fahadh Faasil, and others, with music composed by Anirudh. Released by Red Giant, the film has garnered heightened interest, especially following Rajinikanth’s previous release, “Jailer,” and the coinciding Ayudha Puja festival celebrations.

TJ Gnanavel faced criticism for allegedly spreading false propaganda in Jai Bhim by misrepresenting the sub-inspector involved in a tribal man’s custodial death as a Vanniyar when the real officer was a Dalit Christian. The Vanniyar community condemned the film for provoking unnecessary division. Additionally, a scene where Suriya’s character questions Brahmin’s trustworthiness further fueled controversy.

Film Review: “Vettaiyan”

Vettaiyan,” starring Rajinikanth, opens with a tribute to Thomas Babington Macaulay, setting a controversial tone right from the start. While the film aims to tackle serious issues like drug abuse in government schools, it quickly devolves into a series of absurd scenarios that feel more like propaganda than genuine storytelling.

Directed by TJ Gnanavel, known for his contentious work in “Jai Bhim,” the film perpetuates inaccuracies, particularly regarding the portrayal of communities. For instance, it misrepresents the background of a key character involved in a custodial death, drawing ire from the Vanniyar community.

The narrative introduces a series of implausible events, such as a petty thief making millions through fake QR codes, which raises unnecessary fears about digital transactions. The film’s depiction of the NEET exam further pushes an unfounded agenda, casting it as a tool of privilege without any real evidence.

Visually, “Vettaiyan” features a musical number that, while colorful, hints at cultural appeasement, which might leave audiences questioning the intent behind such choices.

As Rajinikanth’s character delivers lines that promote Dravidianist ideology, the film reinforces negative stereotypes about Hindus while portraying minority communities in a predominantly positive light. This biased representation detracts from the film’s potential impact and alienates a segment of its audience.

In the end, “Vettaiyan” feels more like a vehicle for a specific political narrative than a well-crafted film. For longtime fans of Rajinikanth, this alignment with propaganda over storytelling is disheartening, making it difficult to reconcile the superstar’s legacy with his recent choices.

Hyundai Motor India To Invest ₹32,000 Cr In India, Predicts Strong EV Market Growth

IPO-bound Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has earmarked investments worth around ₹32,000 crore for India until 2032, as the company predicts strong and steady EV market growth until 2030.

The company seeks to raise $3.26 billion through an IPO, and shares are expected to begin trading on October 22.

According to the automaker’s IPO papers filed with SEBI, “We entered into four memoranda of understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu for our Chennai Manufacturing Plant and offer letters with the Government of Maharashtra for our Talegaon Manufacturing Plant, which is yet to commence operations, all of which involved investment commitments, aggregating to approximately ₹320,000 million (₹32,000 crore)”.

According to the draft papers, the company said its future capital expenditures to be primarily for the acquisition of plant, property and equipment and intangible assets in relation to new passenger vehicle model launches.

“In the three months ended June 30, 2024 and 2023 and in fiscals 2024, 2023 and 2022, our payment for acquisition of property, plant and equipment and intangible assets were ₹5,590.72 million, ₹5,355.84 million, ₹32,462.08 million, ₹22,609.82 million and ₹12,649.79 million, respectively,” according to the draft IPO papers.

Hyundai Motor India MD Unsoo Kim has predicted that the EV growth will likely come on the back of increased focus from various companies on the local market and robust government support. “

We believe that the Indian EV market is expected to grow strongly and steadily by 2030, mostly led by the government’s strong leadership and many OEMs’ focus on this segment. HMIL has access to global battery technologies, so we are developing an EV ecosystem,” Kim added.

The automaker has set a production target of 775,000 units for this year, up from 765,000 units in the previous year. Hyundai Motor said in a regulatory filing to the South Korean Financial Supervisory Service that the price band for the IPO for Hyundai Motor India Ltd has been set between ₹1,865-₹1,960. The announcement follows the Seoul-based parent company’s decision to sell 17.5 per cent of its 812.54 million shares in the Indian subsidiary. This would mark the largest IPO in the history of the Indian stock market, surpassing the previous record set by the Life Insurance Corporation of India in 2022, which then raised $2.5 billion.

US Sanctions Indian Company For Involvement In ‘Ghost Fleet’ Transporting Iranian Oil

US Sanctions Indian Company For Involvement In 'Ghost Fleet' Transporting Iranian Oil

The United States has sanctioned an Indian ship services company for allegedly being involved in the transport of petroleum from Iran through a “Ghost Fleet” in defiance of restrictions on Tehran.

The State Department said on Friday that Gabbaro Ship Services Private Ltd based in India “knowingly engaged in a significant transaction for the transport of petroleum from Iran” by acting as the technical manager for the crude oil tanker Hornet.

It said that Gabbaro also has an interest in the ship. The sanctions followed an announcement by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan that Washington was taking action against “the Ghost Fleet that carries Iran’s illicit oil to buyers around the world.” Ghost Fleet refers to ships clandestinely transporting products.

Under the sanctions imposed on Gabbaro, all property and any in which it has interests are frozen in the US and this applies also to persons or entities with more than 50 per cent interest in the company, the State Department notification said.

The Department also said that Engen Management, a Suriname-based company, was also sanctioned as the commercial manager of Hornet. In addition, two other Surinam companies, and one each in China and Malaysia were also sanctioned. Gabbaro is registered with the Registrar of Companies as a “one-man company” and is located in Mumbai, according to corporate information provider Zauba Corp.

The International Maritime Risk Rating Agency said that Hornet is an oil tanker for which Gabarro is the “technical manager/operator.” Marine Traffic, which tracks shipping, reported that Hornet sails under the Swaziland flag and was at Nansha Port in Guangzhou on Saturday. The tanker appears to be plying a route between the Gulf and China. According to Magic Port, which monitors ship traffic, Hornet’s latest travels took it from a port in the United Arab Emirates in late August to Oman, and, after a stop in Singapore, it arrived at the Guangzhou port on Wednesday.

NCPCR Recommends End To Funding For Madrasas, Calls For Their Closure

Minor Male Student Sexually Assaulted By Other Students At Madrasa In Theni; Three Arrested, Madrasa Head Who Ignored Complaints Absconding

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has recommended that all states and Union Territories discontinue funding for Madrasas and eventually shut them down.

In a letter addressed to Chief Secretaries of states and Union Territories, NCPCR Chairman Priyank Kanoongo also advised that non-Muslim children currently enrolled in madrasas be moved to mainstream schools, in line with the Right to Education (RTE) Act of 2009.

The recommendations are based on a comprehensive report prepared after studying the educational conditions of children from the Muslim community.

According to Kanoongo, this report aims to create a road map for ensuring that all children in India grow up in a safe and productive environment, ultimately contributing to national development.

“The report is prepared to guide us toward creating a comprehensive road map that ensures all children across the country grow up in a safe, healthy, and productive environment. By doing so, they will be empowered to contribute meaningfully to the nation-building process in a more holistic and impactful way,” the letter said.

Talking to IANS, Priyank Kanoongo said, “The commission has studied this issue for the past nine years and researched how children from the Muslim community are deprived of school education due to madrasas, detailing the violations of their rights. We have sent a report on this matter to the Chief Secretaries via letter and requested them to close the Madrasa Boards in their respective states. These Madrasa Boards have failed to serve the purpose for which they were established.”

“Currently, there are still over 1.25 crore children in madrasas with no connection to the Madrasa Boards. The Madrasa Boards are merely receiving government funding while accommodating 1.9 to 2 million children, including non-Muslim Hindu children, to create an illusion of educational support,” he further told IANS. The NCPCR, established under the Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act of 2005, is tasked with safeguarding the rights of children across India.

‘Inception’ Star Joseph Gordon-Levitt Reveals What He Loves The Most About Working With Christopher Nolan

‘Inception’ Star Joseph Gordon-Levitt Reveals What He Loves The Most About Working With Christopher Nolan.

Golden Globe-nominated actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt took to the stage at the 14th season of the IFP, formerly the India Film Project, and spoke about what he loves about working with celebrated director Christopher Nolan.

Gordon-Levitt has worked with Nolan in films like ‘Inception’, and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. The actor was joined on stage by Bollywood star Rajkummar Rao.

They spoke on the subject of ‘Mastering the Art of Embodying a Character & Building Hit Record’.

During their conversation, Gordon-Levitt said, “One of the things I’ve always appreciated about working with Christopher Nolan, especially on a massive scale film like Inception or The Dark Knight Rises, is how he treats these giant productions like art films. Even amidst the logistical complexities of car chases and big action sequences, he prioritises the actors and ensures we have the space to focus on our characters, be true to our characters, and the drama”.

He further mentioned, “That’s rare, because often on these big-budget sets, directors can get consumed by the technical aspects. Nolan’s films are huge in scale, but he brings that same focus on the human element, which I think is part of why his movies resonate so deeply with audiences. With ‘500 Days of Summer’, it was a smaller, more intimate project, but what made it work was the trust Zooey and I had built over the years, especially from working together before on Manic. That comfort and connection translated into a very natural dynamic on screen”.

This marks his first visit to India as he graced the event being held in Mumbai. Other artistes in the IFP 14 lineup include Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Kabir Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Aditi Rao Hydari, Saurabh Shukla, Shoojit Sircar, Guneet Monga, Ram Madhvani, Kunal Kemmu and Sharvari.
