Pastors in AP grab lands of Dalits to build Church, LRPF comes to the rescue

In Dorasanipalli village of Proddatur block in Kadapa district, families of Budaga Jangala community, have been threatened and forcefully evicted from their homes by Church pastors to build a Church.

These families have been living on a Poromboke land in make-shift tents, for more than 15 years. Now, the land is being claimed by 2 pastors who are also getting a Church constructed nearby.

The Budaga Jangala community comes under the Scheduled Caste category. Members of this community earn their livelihood by weaving mats, selling itinerant items, fortune-telling and even alms seeking. They go to the nearby villages and town and return to their homes by evening.

The two pastors – Ashok and Krupakar – reportedly started the Church construction illegally and stealthily when the community members were not at their homes. When they were confronted later by some of them, the two pastors hurled abuses at them and got them evicted using force. In the video shared by Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF), a woman and a man can be seen resisting attempts by the pastors and to get them evicted.

Along with the pastors, revenue officials and police officers can also be seen. It was reported that some of the protestors who took on the pastors were taken to the police station.

LRPF had written to the Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes Dr Ramshankar Katheriya and the Collector of Kadapa to take strict action against the pastors and those involved. They had met the Collector on July 1 to seek proper accommodation for the marginalized community.  The Church construction has now been halted and revenue authorities have initiated a land survey.

Sydney becomes 100% renewable

Clover Moore, Sydney Lord Mayor announced that the city of Sydney is completely powered by renewable energy on July 1, 2020, calling it an “exciting day.” In 2019, the city negotiated with Flow power, a $60 million, 10-year contract to provide 100% renewable electricity for the city’s operation.

This will include 115 buildings such as libraries, community halls, office buildings, parks, pools, and 23,000 street lights.

The city is expected to save half a million dollars every year, over a period of ten years for ratepayers, and reduce their emissions by 20,000 tonnes a year.

The renewable energy is said to come from a wind farm in Glen Innes and solar farms in Shoalhaven and Wagga Wagga. This step is a testament to addressing climate change and reducing emissions. In addition, it will also provide jobs in New South Wales contributing to a transitional phase to renewable energy.

In order to support new projects, they partnered with a community energy group that required help with a project. With the help of their investment,  Repower Shoalhaven became operational. The aim was to not only buy renewable energy but to aid in growing the renewable energy sector.

“We have shown that the emissions-reducing renewable-use at scale is not only possible, it is also good for the growth of jobs and the city’s finances,”she says. She also hopes that other governments watch and follow.

Tiktok caught red-handed for spying on iPhone users in India and abroad

iPhone users recently found  that TikTok was recording what they were typing on their phones, ranging from non-sensitive information to passwords and even sensitive emails, from TikTok accounts in India and around the world.

The whole issue revolves around iOS’ clipboard function which lets a user copy text/ image and pastes it on another app. The clipboard can also be used to copy-paste text and images from one Apple device to another Apple device, like from an iPhone to an iPad or Mac computer.

Apple software designed is in such a way that, any app was able to record all text and images that were copy-pasted via the clipboard function. There would be no warning or notice to the user that a particular app is recording information the user was copying via the clipboard function.

TikTok on an iPhone can read anything and everything one copies on another device like passwords, financial information, work documents, sensitive emails, etc.

Now, Apple has released a beta version of the upcoming iOS 14 software. The beta version alerts a user whenever an app copies what the user has pasted on the clipboard.

In April TikTok claimed that it would stop the ‘invasive practice’, but users testing Apple’s upcoming iOS 14 have caught it copying from clipboard functions.

Prague throws “farewell party” for corona as country ends lockdown

Citizens of Prague threw a “farewell party to coronavirus”, as the country emerges out of the pandemic and ended its lockdown with just 350 deaths. A 500 metre table was set up on the famous Charles Bridge in the capital of the Czech Republic. People threw social distancing norms to the air as they attended this party in massive numbers, and shared food and drinks.

The Czech capital held the unorthodox gathering to say a “symbolic farewell” to the infection and to show residents should no longer be scared to meet with friends or visit local businesses. Local bands and musicians dotted the streets, as they danced and partied to mark the end of the lockdown.

The number of diners was limited and they all had to register through the Goout.cz website.

The event was held despite some 260 new Covid-19 cases being found in the country last week. Fears that such an event could become a super-spreader if just a few undiagnosed sufferers turned up were apparently dismissed. Notably, this country has had less than 12,000 diagnosed infections, and the leaders had enforced a lockdown that was implemented hard and early.

Largely free of foreign tourists, Charles Bridge was transformed into one long dining table – as people gathered to mark what organisers described as the end of a period of crisis, although everyone here freely admitted that such celebrations might well turn out to be premature.

Bombay High Court permits minor rape survivor to go through with abortion

The Bombay High Court has permitted a 17-year-old rape survivor to go through with the abortion of a 25-week pregnancy. This has been considered as a milestone judgement of sorts since this verdict has come despite the civic-run KEM Hospital here advising against the abortion. This board that had made the recommendation also suggested that the court provide the victim with the necessary medical and psychological support to go through with the pregnancy.

The bench, which was headed by Justices K K Tated and Milind Jadhav, ordered this on Tuesday, in response to a plea lodged by the victim’s father on her behalf. As per the plea, the girl is a victim of rape and a case against the perpetrator is lodged at the Vakola police station in Mumbai.

Provisions of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act do not permit a woman to terminate the pregnancy if it has crossed 20 weeks and she will have to seek the high court’s permission to do so. The bench in its order, however, noted that in the present case the pregnancy was caused by rape, and hence, there is no doubt that continuance of this pregnancy “is causing a grave injury to the mental health of the petitioner”.

“In case the child is born alive during the termination procedure and if the petitioner and her parents are not willing or are not in a position to take responsibility of the baby, then the state government and the agencies concerned will have to assume full responsibility of the child, the court directed.
