The Taliban militants stormed into Imam Sahib district in Kunduz on Sunday night resulting in five police officers and four civilians getting killed, while eight people were injured.

Yousuf Ayoubi, a member of the provincial council, told Xinhua news agency that several dozens of militants tried to overrun the police station and local government offices, he said. “The clashes continued until early Monday and security forces repelled the attackers and the Taliban insurgents were forced back from the district after at least six militants were killed and several others wounded,” the source added.

In neighbouring Badakhshan, seven policemen and five Taliban terrorists were killed and two police injured after the Taliban attacked a security checkpoint in Arghanjkhwa district, according to a provincial government spokesman. “Picture of Mohammad in any from unacceptable” declares Raza Academy, demands ban on Majid Majidi’s ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God’

Mumba based Raza Academy, has issued a letter demanding a ban on the distribution of the film Muhammad: The Messenger of God. This film is based on the life of the Holy Prophet of Islam.

In a letter addressed to Don Cinema, the distributor of this film, Raza Acadamy has asked them not to release the film on July 21 as it could create unrest and lead to law and order problems.

Raza Academy is a Sunni Barelvi organisation of Indian Sufi Muslims and the organisation is into publications and Islamic research.

It should be noted that the movie was released in Iran in 2015 and was selected as the Iranian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 88th Academy Awards.

Raza Academy said, “Ever since the news of its release has been published there has been an uproar in the community and we have been receiving hundreds of calls to get the film banned as it is completely blasphemous.”

In the letter, they have mentioned, “why time and again the Muslim community is targeted by different ways to instigate it and create problems within the country.”

For Muslims it is an absolute prohibition – Muhammad, or any of the other prophets of Islam, should not be pictured in any way and this film portrays the Holy Prophet as a child and even The Mother and Father of the Holy Prophet have been shown in person.

In the letter, Raza Acadamy made it very clear that, “The Holy Prophet of Islam can never be picturised and those who have done it have committed blasphemy which is intolerable at any cost.”

In 2015, Raza Acadamy had issued a fatwa, a religious dictat against music composer AR Rehaman for composing music for this film.

Russia claims to have completed human trials for COVID vaccine

COVID-19 has taken over the lives of all aspects of our daily lives. Whilst it has been fatal for few, countries like India have a have a far lesser mortality rate compared to other countries. In any case, the world is waiting for someone to come up with a vaccine. Many countries and pharma companies are breaking their heads trying to come up with one at the earliest.

However there are generally five stages a vaccine has to go through before release for the general public. The first stage is the pre-clinical testing, later to Phase I, Phase II and Phase III respectively. Further it progresses to the approval stage and the vaccine is complete.

Researchers around the world are working on more than 150 vaccines to combat the Chinese virus. There are many contenders in various stages of development including two Indian companies. Among the many countries China, United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Australia, India and Russia are progressing towards the approval stage.

Now Russia is said to be completing the testing phases. Russia’s Sechenov University claims to be the first to complete human trials. The novel vaccine developed by the University of Sechenov, Russia might be one of the first of its kind to be effective against coronavirus, as researchers have claimed to have completed the work on clinical trials for the same. The news about the completion of the tests on volunteers was declared by Alexander Lukashev, the director of the Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical and Vector-Borne Diseases at Sechenov University.

“Sechenov University has successfully completed tests on volunteers of the world’s first vaccine against coronavirus,” adding that the volunteers will be discharged in the coming week. The group had started clinical trials in mid-June. Reports say the vaccine trial was given the go-ahead by the Russian Health Ministry on June 16, following which, the first group of volunteers received the jab of the vaccine which were held at the Gamaleya Institute, an epidemiology research centre in Moscow.

The first group had 18 volunteers, while the second one involved 23 volunteers, who were dosed with a liquid and powder form of the vaccine and isolated at the facility in a careful manner during the process. Officials based out of the Gamaleya institute also made headlines recently with a statement that the director of the institute and other researchers had tried the vaccine on themselves before the start of human studies.

The researchers also added that they were happy with the results of the trial, saying that they have been able to study the working of the vaccine on human health.”The safety of the vaccine is confirmed. It corresponds to the safety of those vaccines that are currently on the market,” Lukashev told a leading Russian media agency. The further vaccine development plan is already being determined by the developer’s strategy, including the complexity of the epidemiological situation with the virus and the possibility of scaling up production”.

Veronique Monguillot, the wife of Philippe Monguillot, the French bus driver who was beaten to death by four passengers because he asked them to wear masks, requested the government to take “exemplary action” on the perpetrators who were responsible for her husband’s death. The four men were detained and charged following the assault. “We must bang a fist on the table, so this never happens again,” she said. “It’s barbaric, not normal. We must stop this massacre.”

Philippe, 59, had been left brain dead after he was barbarically thrashed by four passengers who had been asked to wear masks by him. He had been admitted to the hospital in France’s south-western city of Bayonne after sustaining life-threatening injuries. His family pulled the plug on his life support on Friday, saying they couldn’t bear to see him suffer.

This assault caused nationwide marches in support of Monguillot and his family in France, and several people marched along with Veronique and her two daughters, fully clad in white.

French Prime Minister Castex confirmed Monguillot’s death on Twitter, writing that the case had “touched our hearts.” “The Republic recognizes him as an exemplary citizen and won’t forget him. The law will punish the perpetrators of this despicable crime,” he wrote, describing the attack as “cowardly.”

Monguillot worked for, Keoilis, paid their respects to him, by observing a minute of silence in their offices and transport networks. Additionally, the company has also boosted security for its employees, deploying guards on some of its bus services in the area.

Bengaluru-based biotechnology giant, Biocon, announced on Monday that it was to launch a COVID-19 drug for patients with moderate to severe symptoms of coronavirus infections. It claimed that it was the first company in the world to launch a drug for those with moderate to severe COVID-19 symptoms. It got the DCGI’s approval for its 25mg/5mL injection, which works to reduce the effects of the cytokine release syndrome in order to treat critically ill patients. It is to be priced at ₹ 8,000 per vial, and with the requirement of each patient being 4 vials per dosage, the treatment is said to cost ₹ 32,000.

Speaking about this new drug, Biocon’s CEO Kiran Mazumdar Shaw said, “Until the vaccine comes, we certainly need life-saving drugs. I think what we are doing across the world is to see how we can either repurpose drugs or develop new drugs to treat this pandemic.” She added that since there is a possibility of reinfection even assuming the development of a vaccine by the end of this year, a state-of-preparedness is necessary to combat the effects of this infection.

When asked about the steps the company is taking to ensure the availability of the drug, Mazumdar-Shaw said: “Alzumab is already in the market, we will be supplying to hospitals as per protocol against a medical prescription and patient consent form. Currently, there is a huge demand and Biocon wants to ensure Itolizumab first reaches those patients who need them the most”.

This drug is touted to be manufactured at the company’s biotech manufacturing facility in Bengaluru in the form of an intravenous injection.

SC upholds right of Travancore Family’s right over Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple , reverses Kerala HC verdict

On Monday, The Supreme Court upheld the rights of the Travancore royal family in the administration of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala, setting aside the 2011 verdict of the Kerala High Court which directed the State government to set up a trust to take the management’s control and the assets of the Temple. It is to be noted that the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple shot to fame as one of world’s richest temples after the renowned discovery of wealth locked in ‘kallaras’ (vaults) for centuries together.

This temple stands as an architectural endeavor built in granite with the history dating back to the sixth century and was rebuilt in its present form in the 18th century by the Travancore Royal House that had ruled the southern Kerala and some adjoining parts of Tamil Nadu before its integration with the Indian Union in 1947. Even after India’s independence, the temple continued to be governed by a trust belonging to the erstwhile royal family for more than 1,000 years. On the petition of former IPS officer TP Sundarajan, the Supreme Court had stepped into the dispute over temple’s management in 2011. The temple had been managed by a committee headed by the district judge and executive officer, as per the directions of the Supreme Court. The apex court ruled on Monday that the judge-led administrative committee will take care of temple affairs as an interim measure.

The Supreme Court verdict talks about the controversy over the administration and management of the historic temple that has been pending in the apex court for almost a decade. In the stir of charges, the ownership, control and management of the temple trust is to be retained with the erstwhile royal family of Travancore or by a Devaswom board controlled by Kerala government. The Kerala High Court in its verdict on January 31, 2011 had directed that the state government to take further steps to set up a body or trust to take control of the temple, its assets and management and to run the temple in accordance with the traditions. However, the Supreme Court had on May 2, 2011 stayed the High Court’s direction. The same day it had also directed that there shall be a detailed inventory of the articles, valuables, ornaments in Kallaras (vaults) A to F, but had later clarified that Kallara B would not be opened without express orders of the apex court. SC had said it would examine the claims that vault B contained extraordinary treasure with “mystical” energy.

Here are the highlights from Sundar Pichai’s “Google for India” virtual meet

Sundar Pichai, the Indian-origin CEO of Google, held a virtual meet with Prime Minister Modi on Monday morning, where he unveiled the ‘Google for India Digitization Fund’, worth 75,000 crores, or an approximate $10 billion. He added that this was in line with the PM’s Digital India initiative. “We’ll do this through a mix of equity investments, partnerships, and operational, infrastructure, and ecosystem investments. This is a reflection of our confidence in the future of India and its digital economy,” he said via video conference at the company’s annual event focused on India.

He emphasized on how technologies like Google Pay were instrumental in shaping India’s economy, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic period.

Here are the key highlights of the meet as well as an account of the investments.

The investments are to be based on 4 key areas, and the primary focus is to be on education technologies, agriculture-specific AI applications, and technological implementations.

  • The first goal is to provide affordable education and an ‘information-for-all’ access, in the vernacular languages of Tamil, Hindi, Punjabi, etc.
  • Secondly, Google aims to provide services and products that are tailored to cater to the specific needs of a country like India.
  • The third is to empower small businesses towards enhancing their presence in the digital marketplace. Google already has a small business-specific Grow With Google venture, designed specifically for small businesses to use internet tools without making massive investments in technological infrastructure.
  • Finally, expanding new-age technologies like AI towards fields like healthcare, education, and agriculture.

India is one of the biggest markets of Google and is perceived to be untapped potential for global giants like Google.
