Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, has announced a review of the company’s policies addressing the no-moderation scenario with respect to Trump’s posts creating an outcry. The controversial posts against George Floyd protestors by the US President has faced a huge backlash. Protestors say that it encourages violence against those protesting against.

President Donald Trump had said in a Facebook post that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.”, triggering an outcry.

As the protest reaches the 12th day, a memorial service has been arranged for George, the unarmed black man who died due to brutality while in police custody. Washington, DC is preparing for what may be the “largest gathering” ever in the US capital. Many in Australia, Asia and Europe have also taken to the streets to express solidarity.

Meanwhile, juries all over the country are debating on revising the controversial neck restraint taught in police academies, in order to prevent cases like this one from happening. While Minneapolis, where the incident happened, has ordered its officials ordering a ban on police choke and strangleholds, Seattle’s mayor has banned police from using tear gas in protests, and a federal judge in Denver limiting police use of tear gas and rubber bullets on protesters.

Prince William: Royalty by dawn, Counsellor by dusk

Prince William has been assisting those with mental health issues during this lockdown period, by secretly volunteering for a mental-assist hotline. His wife, Princess Kate, has also been actively a part of this, helping to “check in and chat” calls for those who are self-isolating or vulnerable.

The Duke of Cambridge has been a volunteer for Shout, UK’s first-ever counselling hotline, launched in May 2019 by the Royalty of Kensington Palace. There has reportedly been a £3 million investment gone into this by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as well as Sussex, courtesy of the Royal Foundation.

“I’m going to share a little secret with you guys, I’m actually on the platform volunteering,” Prince William told Shout team members during the video call that took place last month. These calls have been an integral part of the Royal Voluntary Service’s National Health Service Volunteer Responders program, which was set up to support the National Health Service and those vulnerable to Covid-19.

This is not the first time that the Duke has taken action in terms of preserving mental health, since in 2018, he had launched a Mental Health at Work program. In the past, he has also spoken about coping with the loss of Princess Diana, his mother, at a young age, in a documentary by BBC, regarding mental health.

Is PETA trying to oust the elephant at Puducherry Manakula Vinayagar Temple?

Puducherry BJP functionary PS Ganehsan alleges that PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) is ousting the elephant Lakshmi from Sri Manakkula Vinayakar Temple in Puducherry. The forest department has reportedly decided to keep the temple elephant Lakshmi at Kamarajar Agricultural Science Center in Kurumbapet for 15 days. Knowing this, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Hindu Munnani functionaries went on to protest against this decision to move the temple elephant Lakshmi out of the temple. Following this, the Periyakadai police rushed to the spot and arrested them. However, the elephant has not been taken to the Agricultural Science Center.

Speaking to a Tamil news portal, PS Ganeshan had said, “The forest department officials have been trying to take Lakshmi out of the temple, claiming that the temple elephant has been injured in the leg. Subsequently, the police arrested me while I was doing a hunger strike at the Puducherry Shree Vedapureeswarar temple, where the elephant Lakshmi is being taken care of. Lakshmi can be given medication inside the temple complex. It is not necessary for Lakshmi to be taken to the Agricultural Science Center in the forest area.”

He further added that it will be difficult for Lakshmi to accommodate herself in the forest area, who has been living in the city for so many years. “We have received information that PETA is behind this. First they would remove the elephant from the temple, claiming to provide medication. Then they will permanently leave the elephant to the forest. This is what happened in Thiruparankundram as well. There is a massive conspiracy to remove elephants from temples across South India.”, said PS Ganeshan.

“After the hunger strike, the Forest Department officials are open for talks. They have assured that they will take this issue to the government and find a solution. After this I have temporarily suspended my hunger strike. If they think of moving the temple elephant Lakshmi again, we will again protest against it”, saids PS Ganeshan.

This issue comes within after the tragic killing of a pregnant elephant in Kerala. On Friday, Kerala police arrested Wilson in connection with the Kerala elephant murder case. The police are on the lookout for Abdul Kareem and his son Riyazuddin who are believed to be absconding.

Complaint filed against India Rural Evangelical Fellowship for violating FCRA and converting gullible non-Christian children

Following the earlier complaints filed against two evangelical organizations – Gospel for Tribals Social Service Society and Serve India Ministries, the Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF) has filed a complaint with the Ministry of Home Affairs against another evangelical organization based out of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh named India Rural Evangelical Fellowship (IREP).

LRPF found that the evangelical NGO was involved in various illegal activities like: conversion of minor non-Christian children to Christianity without the consent of their parents/guardians, planting churches, forcible conversion through enticements and miracle healings, bringing in foreign preachers, and making statements against India.

Mismatch in stated objectives

The stated objective of the IREP as recovered from Darpan portal states as “providing free educational services to the poorest of the poor, uplift the poor and downtrodden by rural development activities and relief, conducting moral and spiritual retreats, seminars and worship services, providing medical assistance to the poor and down trodden.”

However its original intentions become apparent from the following sources:

The IREP’s income tax returns filed in the US states as follows:

Christian Charitable and Missionary, to promote the Gospel Message of Christianity within the State of Andhra Pradesh, South India, with the help of God, to print and publish Christian literature

The IREF’s US Website says that it “works in regions devastated by violence and human trafficking where Christians are persecuted and the caste system has resulted in abject poverty”

Its UK Website says it is “an evangelical Christian development organization, dedicated to reaching the rural villages of Andhra Pradesh in South India with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.” It further goes on to say that it works towards this goal by “mobilizing individual Christians, planting and enabling churches and caring for children by providing them with a Christian education”.

Using children for religious conversion

The IREF has been involved in a number of deplorable activities. They are guilty of converting non-Christian children to Christianity even without the knowledge of their parents/guardians. They have openly stated in their UK website that “on an average, around 20 young people are baptized every week even though taking such a public state may result in persecution and ostracism from their family members and friends”. They themselves have admitted to converting children as young as 10 year old.

There are even several testimonies of young children’s conversion to Christianity like this one:

Mahendra decided to give his life to Christ at this year’s Youth Conference. He was always afraid of his parents’ reaction to baptism; but this year, he decided it was time to make that public confession of faith and trust in the Lord with all of his heart

The children studying in the institutions run by the NGO are given Bible and are forced to put up with Bible classes with the goal of making them “Future Christian Warriors” in their own villages. They even admit to the forced Bible preaching in their newsletters like this one:

Please pray for IREF staff and students as they prepare to close the 2019-2020 academic year in March and April. Many of these young people return to idol-worshipping families for the summer holiday and need your prayers as they stand firm for Christ.

To raise funds for their activities, the NGO uses images of these children and share them with their sponsors abroad. These children are shown as orphans or coming from homes with “severe abuse”.

The IREF scouts for poor and gullible people in villages and entice the families with “free education with boarding and lodging”. However, the children of many of these non-Christian families are put through rigorous Christian education. They are trained to become missionaries in their villages.

The evangelical organization also conducts an Annual Youth Conference attended by a large delegation of evangelists from the UK and US. As part of this event, large number of conversions and baptising activities take place. Reports, newsletters, and presentations are given about the number of students converted. In the Youth Conference held in January 2020, President of IERF declared that 30 youth have been baptised.

Other violations

The NGO is also guilty of other violations:

  • Influencing elections: The President of IREF Mr. Rebba Emmanuel has participated in the political rally of YSRCP at Repalle in Andhra Pradesh. He also released a video asking Christians to vote for the YSRCP during the last elections.
  • Violation of visa norms: Ever since the NGO was started, it has been bringing in foreign preachers and has been indulging in conversion activities. The LRPF had mentioned that as per the newsletters of the IREF the earliest visit by a foreign preacher goes back to 1986 when one Mr. Art Gay had visited and had conducted several baptizing activities.
  • Making statements against India: India is referred to as a “dark place” where majority are living in darkness, an indirect reference and hate speech towards Hinduism.
  • Church planting: The NGO has claimed to have planted 1000 churches. The Government of Andhra Pradesh has a scheme for construction of new churches/ repair of old churches. Around 800 churches are said to be funded this way during the previous regime between 2014 and 2019.
  • Miracle healing: The NGO is also accused of propagating magic remedies and miracle healings, an offence under Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 in an attempt to convert non-Christians.

Investigations by LRPF found that the NGO was earlier receiving funds through Compassion International which has now exited from India. However, it was found that the funding to IERF in the last two years has nearly doubled. In view of these above acts, the LRPF has filed a complaint against the NGO and has called for taking action against the NGO and its head Mr. Rebba Emmanuel.

LRPF is an NGO working in the area of national security. It has been vocal about the rights of tribes and exposing fraudulent organisations.

Twitter deactivates Amul’s account after its boycott China post

Amul’s Twitter account on June 4 was deactivated temporarily after the dairy cooperative’s topical featuring the famous Amul Butter Girl was released in which the Amul Girl can be seen showing her palm to a trembling Chinese dragon.

Twitter had said that the action was taken for the “safety of the account” and not related to the content published. Amul then took the matter with Twitter. Upon going through the reactivation process, the account was live the next morning.

It was reported that Twitter had deactivated the account as it was caught in the spam filter and that it a simple reCAPTCHA process would be required to ensure that an account was not compromised.

“These challenges are simple for authentic account owners to solve, but difficult (or costly) for spammy or malicious account owners to complete. Once the account clears this security step, as was the case with @Amul_Coop, the account regains full access. To protect the accounts we routinely require them to clear this security key for login verification.”, it said.

Amul first topical came in 1966 titled “Thoroughbread” showing the Amul girl as a jockey holding a slice of bread during the horse race season.

From then on, it has become a chronicler of all major events happening across the world.
