UP to emulate Pulse Polio Immunisation model against COVID-19

In order to battle against COVID-19, the government of Uttar Pradesh has decided to follow the Pulse Polio immunisation model. In an announcement on 28 June 2020, Amit Mohan Prasad, the additional chief secretary of the state said that the campaign will begin on 1 July 2020.

In this campaign, health teams will conduct door-to-door surveys to identify potential cases and the risk associated with contracting the virus from certain vulnerable groups. The vulnerable group includes people with respiratory diseases, kidney disease, blood pressure, or diabetes.

The health teams will also report for ailments such as Severe Acute Respiratory Distress in all its regions throughout the campaign. People who are identified to have a history of ailments will be asked to adhere to safety protocols to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

“We have decided to take the COVID-19 surveillance mechanism to a new level with the campaign beginning next month from the Meerut division,” he said.

So far, the health teams, over the past months, have surveyed more than 10 million households in the state covering a population of over 56 million people to report Covid-19 cases.

Uttar Pradesh has reported more than 21000 confirmed cases with more than 600 deaths. The number of recovered cases cross 14000.

KMC students turn Good Samaritans during the lockdown

Despite the increasing number of COVID-19 cases and lockdown, a group of students from the Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) has turned Good Samaritans, by pooling in money to distribute food for the homeless. They are a group of 80 postgraduate medical students in their third year of post-graduate studies.

After the Tamil Nadu government called for a complete lockdown, these students noticed that the homeless were left with no means for food. Since then they have been pooling in money to cook extra food at the mess in their hostel, and distributing those parcels for 50 homeless people in and around Kilpauk. They use their own means of transport for this service.

“On ordinary days, they get help from passers-by as shops will remain open. But during tough times like these, they will be left helpless. So, we decided to take this up as a service until June 30”, said Somumurthy Nagarajan, a third-year student belonging to the group.

They do this by taking turns, as they have specific shift timings for working in the hospital during the lockdown period.

China an “expansionist monster”, Prafulla Ketkar says

The editorial published by RSS magazine Organiser, has described China as an “expansionist monster” in light of recent Chinese adventure against India along the Line of Actual Control.

The article urges the Narendra Modi government to expose the “inhuman and treacherous” face of the communist regime to the world drawing parallels with global effort mounted during World War II to counter Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime.

The editorial titled ‘Defeating the Deceptive Red Dragon’ says “Many would join this dharma yuddha in favour of Bharat. Expanding our tactical alliances’ network for the sake of regional stability and global peace, and enhancing our abilities to counter the adversary on economic, infrastructure and military front is critical in this war,”

“We have seen another case of treachery and deception. The armed force, along with the political leadership, will take a call on the appropriate military response. Beyond that, we should lead the global strategy to tame the non-transparent, undemocratic and expansionist red dragon,” it said.

RSS ideologue and Editor of Organiser Prafulla Ketkar said that China is currently facing multiple challenges on the domestic and international fronts and that the anger against the ruling communist party in the country is at its peak. He mentioned that China resorted to such adventures to divert the attention of the global community.

He added “Not just the Tibet border, but in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South China Sea, China is following an expansionist, destructive path.”

‘Tiktok Grandma’ joins Biden’s campaign bandwagon

Mary Jo Laupp, who became viral after a Tiktok video she posted was instrumental in wrecking a recent Trump campaign, was met with a pleasant surprise when she was asked to be a part of the Joe Biden presidential campaign officially. Hailing from Oklahoma, she had posted a video recently, that called for Trump’s opponents to book out the stadium of his rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

This resulted in a poorly attended campaign, where only about 1/3rd of those who had booked turned up. This earned Mary the famed name of a ‘Tiktok grandma’.

Ms. Laupp’s phone was blowing up with calls, messages, and notifications post this incident. One of these had been from the Biden Digital Coalition, a grass-roots organization, to put her TikTok skills to work supporting Joseph R. Biden Jr. She had been at her granddaughter’s birthday party when she had received this news, flipping her life entirely. The coalition, made up of about 100 people, — many of whom are alumni of other Democratic presidential campaigns — works to amplify pro-Biden messages and build engagement on social media.

As the United States continues to be tormented by the coronavirus pandemic, the political parties are gearing up for the Presidential elections in November 2020.

PV Narasimha Rao And The Truth Of 1991

Prelude

This is the story of India’s Half-lion – a character lost to the crinkly pages of history.

1991 was a chaotic year. The aftermath of the Cold War and the ongoing Gulf War had left the world in turmoil. In India, it had the effect of oil prices soaring and exports dipping. The country was almost bankrupt, crumbling under debt and due on its instalments. Only a fortnight worth of foreign exchange was left.

Few months earlier, in November 1990, Chandra Shekhar had taken oath as the Prime Minister. He had known very well that a loan from IMF could put an end to India’s woes. So, he’d tried and secured a partial loan of $1.8 billion in December, which the IMF said would be available in January. The rest would be sanctioned only if India officially accepted their terms in the finance budget.

But the budget was due one month later, in February – a long time in the world of politics.

When politics trumped economics

Rajiv Gandhi, with whose support Chandra Shekhar had formed the government, was worried that Chandra Shekhar’s popularity would soar if the government presented the finance budget and secured the loan. Hence, in a shocking move, he stalled the budget by getting it postponed to 7th March. On 5th, two days before the budget, he accused the Chandra Shekhar government of espionage. On 6th, Chandra Shekhar resigned (without presenting the budget).

Two months later, the LTTE killed Rajiv.

Enter PV

It was amidst this chaos that PV Narasimha Rao was asked to sit on the Prime Minister’s chair and lead India back from the brink of disaster.

His two immediate concerns were – first, reclaiming faith in India’s ability to manage the crisis, and second, the economic reforms themselves. But PV took an extra step forward – after taking oath as the Prime Minister on 21 June, he proclaimed –

The government is committed to removing the cobwebs that come in the way of rapid industrialization.

– PV Narasimha Rao

In that sentence, he indicated to the world that India was going to change forever. The historic day would come 33 days later, on 24 July 1991.

Until then, he made significant appointments that stabilised India. J.N Dixit was made the Foreign Secretary, who in Sanjaya Baru’s words “was known to have a mind of his own”. He made two calculated bets – extending a hand of friendship to Israel and implementing the ‘Look-East Policy’.

These bets paid off and Israel helped open the doors to U.S. while trade with East Asian countries finally took off.

By then Dr. Manmohan Singh had been appointed as the Minister of Finance. Between 1st and 3rd July, in a secret operation called ‘Hop Skip & Jump’, PV, Dr. Singh and the RBI Governor devalued the Indian Rupee by 17.4%, boosting India’s exports and bringing in the much-needed foreign exchange. This was followed by an order to do away with the CCS (it was making India uncompetitive in the global market).

On 24 July 1991, per PV’s instructions, P.J. Kurien (junior minister for Industry) rose to pay ritual obeisance to Nehru and his daughter in the Parliament. Then, in one fell swoop, he dismantled the license-raj they had left behind as legacy. Few hours later, Dr. Singh began the budget by claiming India’s fiscal deficit had come down from 8.4% to 5.9% and concluded with the following lines –

But as Victor Hugo once said, ‘no power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come.’ I suggest to this august House that the emergence of India as a major economic power in the world happens to be one such idea. Let the whole world hear it loud and clear. India is now wide awake. We shall prevail. We shall overcome.

– Dr. Manmohan Singh

That’s how PV, the Half-lion, put India on a one-way path to progress and faded into oblivion.

Matrimonial sites ensure love is in the air amid a pandemic

Arranged marriages have been closely linked to Indian culture since time immemorial. Owing to advancing technology, there has been a surge of online platforms that aid men and women to find their match. Amid the lockdown restrictions, the grind did not stop.

The ‘big-fat’ Indian wedding culture has shifted to virtual weddings due to lockdown restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. With public places being shut, people are looking for alternate ways to meet each other. To adjust to the new norm, online platforms such as Shaadi.com, Jeevansathi.com, and Bharat Matrimony have implemented new solutions in the form of video call meet-ups and even zoom-call weddings.

Jeevansathi.com had introduced a video call feature even before the lockdown began and reported a hike in matches during the lockdown. Similarly, Shaadi.com had launched a video call feature called Shaadi Meet where potential brides and grooms can meet for the first time over a video call.

These platforms have also taken into consideration the safety of its users. Rohan Mathur, a business head at Jeevansathi.com says that users do not have to exchange phone numbers to access the video call feature. At Bharat Matrimony, users have ensured privacy with respect to who can initiate video calls to prevent crank calls. Users of Shaadi.com can decide who can invite them for a video call but set a comfortable time to receive meet requests.

During the lockdown, a number of weddings have taken place via video call platforms.

Pakistan gets slammed by German state govt for trying to obtain nuclear knowhow illegally

Pakistan continues to engage in the proliferation of nuclear weapons of mass destruction and is trying illegally procuring it from Germany says the German State department.

The report explained, “production and proliferation” of weapons of mass destruction is “serious threat to peace and international security”

Google to start paying news publishers in Australia, Brazil and Germany

Google has announced that it will pay news publishers for their news content through a licensing programme in Australia, Brazil and Germany.

Google’s Vice President of product management said in a blogpost that this program will help these news portals to “monetize their content through an enhanced storytelling experience”. The search engine giant would be offering this through the Google News and Discoveries services. It said that the company will also pay for users to access pay walled articles.

Google has been having talks with major media publishers across the globe to offer payment free news service access in three countries. This has come as a result of a long drawn quarrel with media houses in Australia and France over Google’s refusal to pay for their news content.

Google recently released a statement on their blog which said that it would be having a licensing program that would potentially pay publishers for their high quality content so as to enhance the user experience of the users. Brad Bender,  said that they had been in discussions with the Spiegel group in Germany as well as Schwartz media from Australia and Brazil’s Diarios Associados regarding the same.

It is to be noted that a number of global publications as well as European companies have requested the European Union to adopt stricter laws that it could potentially charge internet companies for the content they produce.
