Fair and Lovely now rebranded to “Glow and Lovely”; Spells hope for change against colourism

Hindustan Unilever has announced that it will be rebranding its skin lightening fairness cream ‘Fair and Lovely’ to ‘Glow and Lovely’, following the recent protests against racial discrimination.

It all started after the George Floyd incident, which sparked ‘Black Lives Matter’ protests all over the world.  This was followed by another worldwide outcry against discrimination against people of colour, and the unfair glorification of the lighter-skinned population. Following this, people also started addressing the notion of fairness creams and the need for change in that arena.

As a result, Hindustan Unilever changed there skin lightening creams from names like ‘Fair and Lovely’ and ‘Fair and Handsome’, to ‘ Glow and Lovely’ and ‘ Glow and Handsome’.“We recognise that the use of the words ‘fair’, ‘white’ and ‘light’ suggest a singular ideal of beauty that we don’t think is right, and we want to address this. As we are evolving the way that we communicate the skin benefits of our products that deliver radiant and even-toned skin, it’s also important to change the language we use,” said Sunny Jain, President, Beauty and Personal Care, Unilever.

This move comes a week after the maker of Lipton Tea and Dove soap announced that it would drop words such as “fair,” “fairness,” “white,”, “whitening” from its marketing in a push to move away from a single ideal of beauty. While these moves have been widely appreciated, they have also sparked tweets and memes trolling these from people all over the world.

BioNTech’s vaccine offers promising trial results for coronavirus

BioNTech and Pfizer have come out with their own vaccines in collaboration, which has shown great potential during the human trials. This has become one of four vaccines that have shown potential results in human trials. The three other companies that have displayed promising results are Moderna, CanSino Biologics, and Inovio Pharmaceuticals.

The research, which is published in the preprint server medRxiv and is yet to be peer-reviewed, describes the preliminary clinical data for the candidate vaccine — nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (modRNA), BNT162b1. The research results that were published stated that the antibodies in the patients who had been given two shots of the developed vaccine were greater than those patients who had received plasma therapy. It was also reported that of the two dosages that had been administered the one with a higher dosage was followed by a short fever after the second shot. A third higher concentration dosage was not administered for the second time following an injection pain.

BioNTech and Pfizer will now pick the most promising of four experimental vaccines for a trial involving up to 30,000 healthy participants, which is likely to begin in the United States and Europe in late July if it gets the regulatory green light. Following the release of these research results, The stock prices of Pfizer and BioNTech rose up by 4.4% and 8% respectively.

It is to be noted that no COVID-19 vaccine has so far been approved to be used for commercial purposes. As the world grapples with a staggering 10.4 million case record with 5, 14,000 deaths, vaccines are the need of the hour.

Hong Kong citizens plan a ‘shadow parliament’ in rebellion to the new security law

Pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong are discussing the conception of a potential ‘shadow parliament’ that could preserve democracy and send a strong message to mainland China in opposition to their new security law. This comes as a result of the new sweeping security legislation that was introduced by China to stifle dissent.

On Wednesday this week, protesters were attacked by the police with tear gas as well as spray hoses, and over 300 people were arrested under this new law.

Coming in opposition to this, Cheng, an activist who had been tortured by China’s secret police, and has now been granted asylum in the UK, suggested that a ‘parliament in exile’ would be the perfect message that could be sent to mainland China in opposition of this new law. Speaking to the media on Friday he said, “A shadow parliament can send a very clear signal to Beijing and the Hong Kong authorities that democracy need not be at the mercy of Beijing. We want to set up non-official civic groups that surely reflect the views of the Hong Kong people.”

He has been granted asylum in Britain following an offer by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson Which provided a path to hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong citizens or British citizenship. This was met with backlash from China side, as it strongly proclaimed that this was an internal affair and that the UK had no right to set foot into this.

Ghislaine Maxwell, the accomplice of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein arrested

Ghislaine Maxwell, the ex-girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein, a registered and convicted sexual predator, was arrested by the FBI and was accused of being his accomplice during all his paedophilic criminal activities. She was mainly charged for helping to recruit and groom underage victims, after which they were sexually assaulted by Epstein.

She was remanded in custody in the New Hampshire quote and was transferred to New York for further inquiry.

Epstein died in prison on 10 August as he awaited, without the chance of bail, his trial on sex trafficking charges. He was arrested last year in New York following allegations that he was running a network of underage girls – some as young as 14 – for sex. His death was determined to be suicide.

Four of the charges belong to the years 1994 through 1997 when she had been his close associate as well as in an intimate relationship with him. She had been responsible for normalising sexual abuse for minor victims by discussing such topics in front of them while also being present during such acts between Epstein and the victim. She has also been charged with allegations of perjury.

Maxwell’s arrest is a landmark decision for the many underage victims who continue to seek justice. And it could be an enormous turning point for others who helped Epstein and Maxwell run their alleged criminal operation but have escaped judicial punishment so far.

“Tiger Abhi Zinda Hai” : Jyotiraditya Scindia lashes out at Congress MP

Madhya Pradesh, Mar 12 (ANI): BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia with BJP National Vice President Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar at BJP State headquarters in Bhopal on Thursday. (ANI Photo)

Jyotiraditya Scindia hit back at Madhya Pradesh Congress MPs for levelling charges against him which he claimed were baseless and sought to shut down the criticism against him with “Tiger Abhi Zinda Hai”.

Scindia had reportedly attended a cabinet meeting of Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Bhopal when he addressed BJP workers. In his statement, he had said, “You know Congress leaders from outside but I have known them from inside. The Congress government was such that someone was made to occupy the chair but the remote was with someone else. Corruption was rampant. Our 22 legislators made a sacrifice to stop corruption.”

Coming out in response to these remarks by Scindia, a Congress spokesperson called this just another punchline to motivate BJP workers, claiming that and claimed that it was eventually going to lose all their assembly seats in the upcoming polls and that Congress will form the government again. They also claimed that he was merely copying Shivraj Chouhan’s line, and hit back on Twitter, stating that “traitors have no religion. Defeat of the irreligious and sinners is the basic religion of democracy.’’

It is to be noted that, the results of the Assembly by-elections for 24 seats in Madhya Pradesh, the date for which has still not been announced, will be a watershed moment for BJP’s latest entrant Jyotiraditya Scindia. Out of these 24 seats, the BJP needs to win at least 9 seats to reach the majority of 116 members in the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly.

India-China Standoff: Started by China, India may end this up for good, forever

If you analyze the Satellite Images of the recent army build-up near Galwan Valley on the Chinese side, it is very clear that China wants the world to see its military strength and who could be a better opponent than India to show its might! India is an emerging economic giant and a responsible power in this side of the world.

China clearly knows that by moving its military ammunitions near the border, it will get international attention. The intention of China of confronting the Indian Army Jawans at Patrol point 14 was to send a message to other Asian countries, especially the ones who are emboldened by the idea that India is an emerging superpower among them.

But as ground zero keep emerging and with the changing stance of Global Times, the Communist Party of China Mouth Piece, on the same incident about the casualties, it’s clear that the move proved totally fatal. There is ample scope for speculation that China lost heavy on its side and is currently in face-saving mode.

Why to go to such an awful extent for the border in that mountainous terrain which has been kept open by the Chinese themselves all these years? It occurs that this is not and rather this was never a border issue between India and China, and that there is something more to what meets the eye.

China never wants these borders to be a perfectly cut out between the two countries in the first place, and it always wants it this way unlike India which is keen to resolve this as soon as possible. To give an insight, we have to go back to Nehru – Zhou Enlai’s era (1960’s) where the latter wanted to cut a deal by which China could take Arunachal Pradesh (Tawang District) in return for Ladakh’s borders to India, which Nehru clearly refused, resulting in 1962 Indo-Chinese War. Later Deng Xiaoping (1980s and ’90s) also tried to seal the deal, as they always believed and still believe that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of their Greater China vision.

The expansionist mindset later made China to think otherwise, the result of which is an unfinished border story that runs from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh till now. The current Xi-Jinping’s era to create a meteoric rise in its infrastructure projects especially on the Indo-China Border along the conflicted zone makes one thing clear that China now wants control over what “China establishes as border”. One such territory being the area of Aksai Hind (let us normalize this term as much as we can please!). This was grabbed from Pakistan assuring them to hold Indian Army at check always, giving India a 2 front check (one from Pak and another from China), in return for Pakistan’s vote of support for UNSC’s permanent seat in return. This was also to provide Pakistanis cover for their ISI trained terrorists to enter into Kashmir valley.

If one gives a closer look at this, it would become clear that whenever there’s been a skirmish at Indo-China border, the shell firing across the Indo-Pak LOC would have been more, eventually benefitting the terrorist intruders to enter into Kashmir. So we can easily say that taking back Aksai Hind would partially solve the Kashmir conflict as that would technically cut China and Pakistan’s nexus over Kashmir.

It would also go on to strategically take on China with the China’s access to Gwadar through the CPEC and also the Belt and Road Initiative. So keeping India at check behind LAC also means to divert India’s attention from the larger area, but with the opening of DBO Airstrip and construction of the road from Leh to DBO by India breaks this plan by China. Solving this border dispute between Indo-China would also mean accepting the controversial G-219 highway. The infrastructure passes from Tibet to Xinjian (autonomous regions), the former is a dispute with Tibet and the latter is an issue of separatist movement by Uighur Muslims, which China has crushes by persecuting them in concentration camps aka re-education centres.

Now, India taking back Aksai Hind would mean cutting Chinese army access between these two provinces which could lead to an uncontrollable uprising from both places, where one would fight for the Independence and other for its Identity, resulting in a weak and unattended border with India, which definitely would make India a Stronger participant in the region.

On one hand China is pushing Nepalese communist government to claim Indian lands by pressurizing them to approve the controversial border maps and on the other hand it is creating conflicts in POK through Pakistan shows how desperately China wants to use all its options to create trouble for India from all fronts. Communists in China should know that India and Nepal relationships goes share the same civilizational history and the people-to-people ties are intricate.

To conclude, public sentiment across the world and probably within China too is against the crony Communists whose lust for power and expansionism seems to not be under control. Its adventure in the Galwan Valley is an attempt to shift focus from the havoc it has caused due to the Chinese virus. It remains to be seen as how India gives a logical conclusion to it. What was started by China will be ended and should be ended by India to record its place in the new global order.

Energy-efficient robot to monitor endangered species

Georgia based engineers came up with SlothBot to monitor endangered species in forests. The robot hangs from a cable in a tree and moves in sloth’s speed. It gathers data about plants, animals, and environmental conditions. It saves energy by moving slowly and can stay active for a long time as it is powered by a solar panel.

It is favorable for long-term monitoring of a natural environment, which is usually difficult for humans to do. “Being slow and hyper-energy efficient will allow SlothBot to linger in the environment to observe things we can only see by being present continuously for months or even years,” says robotic professor Magnus Egerstedt.

The robot has to only sit on trees and measure various things in the environment. It moves only to “survive,” thereby serving the purpose of conserving energy.

The design is inspired by sloths and explores the concept of “slowness as a design paradigm.” Concerning the design of the robot, “must be understood in the environmental context in which it is to be deployed,” he says.

If the goal of a robot is to be present in a dynamic environment for a long time, then “slowness” is key for persistence for the robot to monitor tasks for this type of environment.

“I would love to see a bunch of small SlothBots “living” among the trees somewhere in a rainforest for years, providing real-time data as to what is happening to the ecosystem,” he says as another aspect of the robot to be developed shortly.
