Germany, Finland rescue and repatriate ISIS-captured women and children from Syria

23 women and children from Syria who had been captured and kept hostage in the ISIS camps have been repatriated to Germany and Finland. Notably, some of them had had a criminal record to their name, and had allegedly had ties with the Islamic State.

According to German media reports, the three repatriated German women are aged between 21 and 38 and the children are aged between 2 and 12. The group resided in a refugee camp under Kurdish control.

“I am very relieved that we were able to repatriate another 12 children and three mothers from camps in northeastern Syria yesterday,” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in a statement. Maas added that the return was organised in cooperation with Finland, which repatriated six children and two women. He did not further identify the women or children. However, the German weekly Bild am Sonntag reported that all three women had left Germany in recent years to join the so-called Islamic State group Syria. The paper identified the women as Merve A., Yasmin A. and Leonora M.

Finland’s foreign ministry said it had brought home six children and two adult mothers because it was the only way to protect the children held at the al-Hol camp in northeastern Syria, where Kurdish-led forces have detained suspected former IS members. “Under the constitution, Finnish public authorities are obligated to safeguard the basic rights of the Finnish children interned in the camps insofar as this is possible,” it said.

The ancient roots of Javadu Hills: 5500 years old stone tools and Chola era inscriptions found

A team of researchers led by Dr. Mohan Gandhi of the Tamil departmen in Sacred Heart College stumbled upon stone tools believed to be atleast 5500 years old dating back to Neolithic period at the Javadhu Hills near Tiruvannamalai.

12 stone tools were found worshiped at the Hanuman Temple in the village of Chittoor in the Puthurnadu region. P Venkatesan, a retired archaeologist with the Archaeological Survey of India, predicts that these ancient weapons date back to the late Neolithic 3500 BC.

Some of the ancient stones look polished and sharpened while some of them were found to be damaged. They were found by the tribal community in the village near a spring while digging for agricultural work. Since then they have been collected and kept in the temple and worshiped as deities.

Apart from this, inscriptions carved during the Chola and Vijayanagara dynasties have been found in the Shiva temple located in the hill village of Mozhalai. It mentions the 16th century inscription of the Vijayanagara Empire about Veera Kambannar who reclaimed Madurai. It is known from this inscription that Kambanna was referred to as Mahamandaleswaran and Kambanna Udayar. It also notes that ‘Navira Malai’ belonged to ‘Adaiyur’.

Earlier in 2018, Dr. Mohan Gandhi’s expedition group had found stone inscriptions dating back to the Chola and Vijayanagara periods that had references to the ‘Navira Malai’, the name by which Javadu Hills could have been known some 2000 years ago. This Navira Malai is also referred in Sangam literature – Patthupaatu and Ettuthogai. The name ‘Navira Malai’ comes across in  Malaipadukatakam, a part of the Patthupaatu.

Another inscription, sheds light on the collection of taxes by the then kings. This inscription says that Navira Malai, belongs to the Adaiyur kingdom. Adaiyur Nadazhvan (ruler of Adaiyur) ruled the Puthurnadu region of the Tirupattur district. It seems that there was a government above Adaiyur guessed to be the Cholas. The Cholas have stated the order of tax in this inscription. It says that ‘Adayur Nadazhvan’ should get only the tax that ‘we’ say from the people of this region suggesting that the emperor did not have the title of Nadazhvan if he received too much tax from the people of Naviramalai.  It is noteworthy to mention that today, Adaiyur is a town near Thiruvannamalai.

The third inscription found is believed to have been inscribed by Kulothungan during his 41st year of regin. It refers to the area as the ‘Nikarili Chola Mandalam’ covering regions of Dharmapuri, Bangalore, Kolar and Tumkur in Karnataka. The inscription also talks about the donation of a village named Pudur to a ‘Muzhalainatheeswar’ temple. This temple still exists and retains the same name, while the village has taken the name Pudur Nadu.

The fourth inscription talks about the agricultural cultivation of the region. It talks about the wages to be paid person but does not say anything about the kind of crop grown.

Dr. Mohan Ganthi and his team have been continuously documenting the historical traces found in Javadu Hills.

Paava Kadhaigal: Of Love and Honour

The central idea around which this anthology revolves is easy to guess – ‘Honour’. Paava Kadhaigal explores four stories where the idea of honour is challenged when love traverses the boundaries of gender, caste and sexuality and how it has a toll on the lives of the people falling on either sides of the spectrum. This anthology streaming on Netflix brings four of the most sought after directors in present day Kollywood. The episodes directed by Sudha Kongara, Vignesh Shivn, Gautam Menon and Vetrimaran respectively, has a terrific cast  who otherwise are forced to be in “commercial” zone.

Thangam

“Thangam”, directed by Sudha Kongara, touches upon the ill-treatment of trans people and how their lives have always been a struggle navigating through the insensitivity of the gender binary world. Despite the affirmative actions by the state, we keep hearing their plight that often goes neglected, where the society keeps discriminating and oppressing this section of people.

This short revolves around the life of one such person and shows how the feelings and voice of such people are equally important in today’s society. It is about the ‘honour’ of two families getting impacted by a trans. Kalidas Jayaram as Sathaar was shockingly terrific as a transgender. The body language, the voice modulation, the makeup and dressing, all made it look so believable and very realistic too. Shantanu as Thangam was very pleasant to watch, was a great support to Sathaar. Although ‘Thangam’ is central to the story, ‘Shantanu’ doesn’t have much scope to perform. The real ‘Thangam’ turns out to be Sathaar. Or probably that was the intention behind the filmmaker. The poetic justice that gets served at the end does leave an impact.

Love Panna Utranum

If it was gender that confronted honour in ‘Thangam’, this short, directed by Vignesh Shivan, is about sexuality and honour. Here the genre itself did not conform to the strict genre categorization of movies. It tries too much to be in a quirky, dark comedy category and a tragic drama at the same time.  Anjali as the twins who fall in love with people who they are not supposed to leads to the father being invariably stubborn about the whole love thing happening in his own backyard. It was brilliant when they showed how the father was shown to be “accepting” inter-caste marriages on the outside but is also the leader of the group that kills them off due to the same reason.

The scenes could have been a bit more coherent with respect to their arrangement, the twin sister bonding did not come out well even after what happened to the first sister, probably did not have much time to establish it. The characters were not interacting with intent, and the father character was utterly non-expressive.

And, with Kalki Koechlin as Penelope being the person who sees the whole thing from the outside, she was shown to be the progressive and open in nature (which is the only character she has been playing all her life), but she felt completely out of place with respect to comfort and language. Just a couple of uncensored bad words, an uncensored kiss and a give-it-back message to the sinner doesn’t make this movie the best, it could have been much much better. The most ridiculous part is where the father becomes a rapper.

Vaanmagal

This short, directed by Gautam Vasudev Menon, is about the child rapes, and how much of a pressing issue this has been all around the country, and to see this horrendous crime affecting the person so badly that it puts them in an horrific state of mind is something that has to be taken very seriously. Also, it explores subtly how women are perpetuators of purity and the honour resulting out of it. But, it breaks the taboo surrounding the discourse about these subjects. There is no ‘oppressor’ vs. ‘oppressed’ dialectics in viewing patriarchy and honour.

Gautam Menon, as the father Sathya, looks to be brilliantly written on paper but failed to do so in the movie. The line “I feel naked in front of my own daughter” hits your gut so hard that you feel for all the fathers that would have gone through this particular situation. And, how the father feels impossible to face her daughter fearing that his girl would see all the men, including him, as monsters. The way whole setup to the “event” on how the elder daughter has become an adult through the natural course of life, but the younger one has been “forced” to become an adult was particularly brilliant.

Even though we see Gautam Menon exploring uncharted waters with respect to stories and characterization, there wasn’t even an ounce of expression on his face with all that was going on, and even worse his eyes were blank, pitch dark blank which brings out a fact about how comfortable he has been with that uber-cool urban guy in his stories and his characterization.

Simran as Mathi is at her best in this short. The mother’s obsession to cleanliness and how it affects her when her daughter has been made “dirty” was hard hitting, and how expressive she has been even after all these years was just brilliant to watch.

Personally, felt the “Althotta Bhoopathi” dialogue felt very disrespectful to the actress whose very song was one of the most celebrated ones in her career.

Oor Iravu

Let’s save the best for the last, and that’s what the producers and the Netflix people would have thought too. Vetrimaran’s “Oor Iravu” is as brilliant as the director himself. Probably, the only short that took the theme and sensibilities of the “Pavam” to the serious extents to leave us devastated. Even though the short is just around 40 minutes, it felt like the time was going slower than it was, which was probably due to the build-up and the tension that the scenes create. This was similar to how the “ticking” sound in Interstellar created a sense of unrest, here the scenes in itself cause a stir inside us, you could well cut the tension with a knife. We kind of know how this is going to end, but we do not want that “event” to come sooner than it is supposed to.

We feel a strange surge of morbidity on the face of Prakash Raj’s character as the father throughout the short and he does that with so much grit that he just has that one split-second to kind of regret the sin but immediately gets back to that morbid state inferring to the state he has been for the last two years since his most favourite daughter had left them all for love.

And, the other best part of the short is Sai Pallavi, to beat that “morbidity”, she brings out that “struggle” with a terrific performance. The “struggle” is just gut wrenching to watch and it even feels so close to us because of the dialogues during those moments. One cannot imagine someone going through those moments, cannot even watch on screen, let alone to see it with such “morbidity” in person by her own father. Sai Pallavi is an actress that we would need to protect by frequently giving her such intricate stories, and not give her stories that require her fighting because of an unusual perfume smell on her husband.

The fact that such themes have been taken due to the OTT platform allowing it is in itself a great step towards telling these realistic stories that the majority of the directors have not been able to take up. This opens doors to the parallel cinema that our industry has been devoid of all these years.

Kerala Model: Wuhan virus cases continue to rise, Shailaja Teacher throws her arms in the air

After floating in the air amidst the adulations, the ‘rock star’ Health Minister now finds herself grappling with the Wuhan Virus pandemic in her state with no signs of respite showing up. Over the past few weeks the Kerala has reported consistently cases in the range of 5000-6000 while its neighbours like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have significantly brought the situation under control. On December 19, Kerala reported 6293 confirmed cases while Tamil Nadu just reported 1127.

As an expression of exasperation, ‘corona slayer’ Shailaja Teacher has now gone on appeal mode asking people to stay inside and come outside only if it is essential.

The ‘corona slayer’ Minister said that the movement due to the recent local body polls has caused a spurt in cases over the past few days.

However, it is to be noted that Kerala has been topping the charts of daily positive cases for more than 2 months. As things stand today, Kerala has the highest number of cases being reported per day.

US Government launches ‘Space Force’

Steve Carell and Greg Daniels might as well have pulled a ‘Simpsons’ by means of their show ‘Space Force’, in which they had commissioned a fictional group of armed forces called the ‘Space Force’, which will attempt to colonise habitable planets. In a similar manner, US Vice President Mike Pence announced that the members of ‘Space Force’, one of the newest branch of the US armed forces, one of Donald Trump’s signature policy initiatives will be known as ‘guardians’.

“It is my honour,” Pence said, “on behalf of the president of the United States, to announce that henceforth the men and women of the United States Space Force will be known as guardians. Soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and guardians will be defending our nation for generations to come.”

On Twitter, the space force said: “The opportunity to name a force is a momentous responsibility. Guardians is a name with a long history in space operations, tracing back to the original command motto of Air Force Space Command in 1983, ‘Guardians of the High Frontier. The name Guardians connects our proud heritage and culture to the important mission we execute 24/7, protecting the people and interest of the US and its allies.”

Notably, the future of this wing hangs on a thin thread, with President elect Joe Biden ready to take over Donald Trump’s position in the White House. As the Associated Press put it, delicately: “President-elect Joe Biden has yet to reveal his plans for the space force in the next administration.”

Japan’s ‘Twitter’ killer’s last wish is to marry a ‘normal girl’ so that he can have a visitor before execution

Japan’s Twitter killer’s last wish was to marry a ‘normal’ girl before getting a death sentence. Takahiro Shiraishi, who has been dubbed as the Twitter killer, has been ruled with a death sentence after he has confessed to trapping killing and butchering 8 women and one man. Surprisingly, he hadn’t denied the claims, and instead admitted to targeting internet users who had posted about suiciding, and had taken their lives.

In the midst of this, the strange last wish request of this man has taken the country by surprise, and made the headlines. Found guilty of murder, forced sexual intercourse and robbery, Shiraishi has said he will not appeal against his death sentence – but he still hopes to be able to marry. “Now, I want to meet an ordinary girl,” he said. “I want to get married. I want to find a marriage partner while I am in jail,” he had said.

Asked why he wanted to get married, Shiraishi said: “I was thinking it would be good to have someone who supports me. She would be able to come and see me and bring me things.”

While a judgement has not been passed on this weird request, the court has ruled against Twitter killer’s lawyers’ argument on consent. His lawyers had argued that the victims had given consent by replying to his messages.

San Francisco woman trades bobby pin for new house

Demi Skipper, a woman from San Francisco, has traded a bobby pin for a brand new cabin after a series of clever swaps. She started The Trade Me project on TikTok and Instagram in May – and has since made 25 trades including shoes, electronics and cars.

It all started during lockdown when she was looking for something to to do, and she started using platforms like Craigslist, eBay, and Facebook to help with her trades. In her first clip at the start of the project, she said: “I’m trading a bobby pin up until I get a house,” and finally reached her goal just six months later.

The idea is to swap just one item at a time, trading up to bigger and better items each time – with a bobby pin being the starting point for Demi.

On November 28, she shared some big news: She managed to trade a 2011 Jeep Patriot for a tiny cabin — technically a house — from Wildbound Cabin Co. According to the company’s website, those tiny pull-along cabins start at $9,500. The interior is about as big as half a shared college dorm room, with enough space for a bed and a countertop.

Jairam Ramesh tenders apology to NSA Ajit Doval’s son for false accusations

Jairam Ramesh, who is a close confidant of the Nehru-Gandhi family-led Congress Party has tendered an apology to National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval’s son Vivek Doval over comments he made after an unsubstantiated article was published in The Caravan Magazine accusing Ajit of running a hedge fund whose promoters were of dubious antecedents.

After the apology was made the Delhi Court on Saturday (19 December) closed the criminal defamation case against Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.

In an article published in The Caravan article titled ‘The D Companies’, Vivek Doval was accused of running a hedge fund whose promoters were of dubious antecedents.

This led to an immediate filing of a criminal defamation case against Ramesh and Caravan magazine Editor-in-Chief Paresh Nath and reporter Kaushal Shroff for damaging his reputation.

In his letter of apology, Ramesh admitted that he made baseless allegations against Ajit and regrets that he should have conducted independent verification on the facts of the articles before jumping to a conclusion. The apology was accepted by Vivek Doval.

Ramesh stated, “I had conducted a press conference on 17 January 2019 making certain statements about you, your family and your business venture GNY Asia Fund. I understand these statements have hurt you deeply.”

He added, “I want to clarify that these statements or accusations, were made drawing conclusions from an article that was published the previous day in the Caravan magazine. As the case progressed, I realized that perhaps some independent verification may have been in order.”

Ramesh felt it was appropriate to highlight the questions raised in the article as the general elections were about to take place. However, he added, “In retrospect, I may have gone overboard in making certain insinuations against you and your family,”.

“Thus, I would like to offer my apologies to you and your family for any hurt the statements have caused. I would also urge the INC to remove the press conference from the press releases available on their website,” he added.

The case against Jairam Ramesh is now closed, however, the defamation proceedings against the magazine and journalist Kaushal Shroff will continue.

“COVID vaccine might turn you into a crocodile”: Brazilian President Bolsonaro

In a bizarre, and rather hilarious address made by Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro, he claimed that the new COVID vaccine might turn humans into crocodiles.

“In the Pfizer contract it’s very clear: ‘we’re not responsible for any side effects.’ If you turn into a crocodile, it’s your problem,” Bolsonaro said on Thursday. That vaccine has been undergoing tests in Brazil for weeks and is already being used in the United States and Britain. “If you become superhuman, if a woman starts to grow a beard or if a man starts to speak with an effeminate voice, they will not have anything to do with it,” he said, referring to the drug manufacturers.

Notably, the Brazilian president had tested positive for the coronavirus in July. He has been criticised by health experts for showing complete disregard for physical distancing norms by attending rallies and meeting groups of supporters, often without wearing a protective mask. A top judge in Brazil had to order Bolsonaro to wear a mask in June.

Meanwhile, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has been undergoing trials in Brazil for weeks. The vaccine has already been administered to some people in the United States and the United Kingdom. However, it has had some side effects on some people on whom it had been administered.

Four trial volunteers in the UK who received the vaccine got Bell’s Palsy (a form of temporary facial paralysis). A nurse in USA who was given the vaccine fainted in the middle of a press meet triggering concerns of safety about the vaccine.
