Eiffel tower goes ‘lights-out’ to pay homage to Beirut explosion victims

Iconic Eiffel Tower went dark for one hour on Wednesday to pay homage to the victims of the Beirut warehouse explosion. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted, saying, “In solidarity with #Beirut and #Lebanon, the city of @Paris will unlock an exceptional emergency aid of 100,000 Euros. This Wednesday night from midnight, we will turn off @LaTourEiffel to pay tribute to all the victims.” Similarly, pyramids in Giza and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai were lit up with a display of Lebanon’s flag to pay tribute and display their solidarity in the wake of the victims of the blast.

On Tuesday, an enormous explosion tore through the Lebanese capital and destroyed several hundred metres of the area around. This was the most powerful blast in many years in the city, which is already suffering from the global pandemic and an economic crisis. The explosion killed nearly a hundred people and injured 4000.

Heart-wrenching visuals emerged on social media following the blast and showed the aftermath of the disaster, causing an outpouring of support and solidarity for Lebanon from across the world.

Notably, ammonium nitrate, the chemical that was responsible for the blast, has a dark past in terms of causing industrial accidents all over in the history of the world.

Lebanese bride’s wedding video captures the powerful explosions that rocked Beirut

28-year-old Israa Seblani had no idea about the impending doom that was about to shake her city when she had stood radiant in a long white gown, posing and smiling for her wedding video. But, her almost perfect wedding video was interrupted when a shattering deafening roar had shaken the ground, and a powerful shockwave enveloped Beirut, cutting her wedding celebrations short. This video footage was captured at that moment when a massive explosion had resulted in killing 135 people and injuring more than 5000.

Seblani is a doctor who is working in the United States and had arrived three weeks ago in Beirut for her wedding. Right after the explosion happened, she had helped to check on injured nearby, while in her wedding dress, before leaving the place.

Seblani and her husband Ahmad Subeih were still struggling to process what had happened when Reuters had spoken to them. “I have been preparing for my big day for two weeks, and I was so happy like all the other girls, ‘I am getting married’. My parents are going to be happy seeing me in a white dress; I will be looking like a princess.” After the blast, she and her husband tried to compose themselves and carry on with their celebrations. She added that she was happy to be alive after the blast.

Subeih has been waiting for a visa to the United States to join his wife. Seblani loves Lebanon but feels that after Tuesday’s blast, living there is not an option.

US wants India to buy heavy-lifting attack drones

The United States is keen to provide India with armed drones capable of carrying over 1,000 pounds of bombs and missiles. This development has come at the wake of the violent clashes in June between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh.

The MQ-1 Predator drones are capable of carrying more than 1,000 pounds of bombs and missiles capable of striking targets at land, sea and air.

On 15 June, Chinese troops attacked the soldiers of the Indian Army that led to the death of 20 soldiers and an unspecified number of deaths on the Chinese side.

Also, things have been heating up between the US and China in the South China Sea and the US sees India as a perfect partner to counter China in the vast Indian Ocean Region. Hence the sale of advance drones to India that will help us to keep an eye on our interests.

In a report published in the Foreign Policy magazine interviews with US officials and Congressional aides says, “The Trump administration is looking to ramp up arms sales to India in the wake of the country’s deadly border clashes with China, opening a new front of tensions between Washington and Beijing”.

The US sees India not only as its biggest security partner, but it also sees India as the world’s biggest market for arms sales. Over the last ten years, India has purchased several weapons systems such as the Apache attack helicopter, P-81 maritime surveillance and anti-submarine plane and heavy transport planes and helicopter such as the Globemaster C-17, C-130 Hercules and the Chinook heavy left helicopter.

President Donald Trump has officially amended rules that restrict the sale of military-grade drones to foreign partners like India. This is an important policy shift by the Trump administration that changes the interpretation of the Missile Technology Control Regime.

This provision will allow the US to sell armed drones, which had previously been restricted because of their speeds and payloads. Foreign Policy also reported that “They are going to want to provide India with armed [category-1] Predators”.

The last twenty years have been very taxing for the American economy that saw the fall of the real estate market and the two-front war in Afganistan and Iraq not going anywhere.

Also, the rise of China, that has plans to usurp everything in its sights has forced America to change the policy. The time of America’s role as the sole global policemen have come to an end. It needs security partners and policymakers in the US believe this is the right time to free themselves up from the international and multilateral constraints.

America has been lobbying India by offering its state of the art military hardware that includes armed drones. Also, there is a legislative move to bring India at par with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies that will make the sale of arms more legitimate.

The last ten years saw the US defence sales to India an increase to over $20 billion. In 2016, the US designated India as a Major Defense Partner.

If the sale of armed drones happens, India will be the first non-treaty partner to be offered a Missile Technology Control Regime Category-1 Unmanned Aerial System – the Sea Guardian UAS manufactured by General Atomics.

The US is also pushing India to buy and is willing to set up the manufacturing of the Lockheed Martin’s F-21 in India. Also, there is Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet and F-15EX Eagle that the US sees can be part of India’s future fighter aircraft acquisitions.

With the rise of an aggressive China, the dynamics have changed in the Asia-Pacific. India which was reluctant to invite Australia for its Quad navel exercise have now changed its policy.

The recently concluded India-US naval exercise was not only a signal to China but this crucial exercise was carried out to enhance India’s military capabilities, increase US-India military interoperability, and protect shared security interests in the Indo-Pacific region.

Congress and its U-turns on the Ram Janmabhoomi

Right from the beginning, the Congress had been in a catch 22 with the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute. The then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had directed Govind Vallabh Pant to pass orders to the district magistrate of Ayodhya to evict the Hindus from the Ram Mandir and remove the idols inside the Babri Masjid complex. However, District Magistrate KK Nair, refused to budge to the ‘Aurangzeb diktat’ of Nehru citing that the Hindus offered worship at the site. Irked, Nehru saw that KK Nair was penalized and was suspended from service who would later join the Jan Sangh and dedicate himself to the cause of Ram Mandir.

Rajiv Gandhi who had earlier overturned the Supreme Court ruling on Shah Bano, tried to placate the Hindus by opening the doors of the locked Babri Masjid and allow daily shilanyas to be performed.

Fast forward to the new millennium, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance in September 2007, told the Supreme Court that there was no historical evidence that Lord Ram lived.

In its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court the then UPA government said “Valmiki Ramayana and Ramcharitamanas admittedly form an important part of ancient Indian literature, but these cannot be said to be historical records to incontrovertibly prove the existence of the characters and occurrences of events depicted therein”.

This was the Congress government’s response to the petition filed in the Supreme Court against the Sethusamudram project.

Kapil Sibal, senior Congress leader, argued against the construction of a huge Ram temple in Ayodhya on behalf of the Sunni Wakf Board in the Ram Janmabhoomi case. He used a number of tactics to delay the verdict so that it would not come until the 2019 election. He even asked the court that the appeals be heard in July 2019 after the general elections which was refused by the bench. Later, he was told by his party that it will be a ‘politically sensible decision’ to recuse himself from the case.

Another well-known Congress leader, Sashi Tharoor, had earlier said that no ‘good Hindu’ would want to build a Ram temple on the site of the Babri Masjid and went on to say that the Ram temple should be built in one’s heart.

Not only the Congress party but its entire ‘secular’ gang was against the building of a Ram Mandir at the Ram Janmabhoomi.

The Congress party, which had for long denied the existence of Lord Ram went soft on its stance a few months before the 2019 general elections, to garner Hindu votes. All of a sudden, it vowed to build a Ram temple in Ayodhya. Posters and banners of Rahul Gandhi suddenly featured Lord Ram. They even added that Ram temple would come only under the Congress rule.

Along with them, the self-proclaimed ‘historians’ and ‘intellectuals’ scoffed that BJP’s promise to ‘build the Ram Temple’ would never be fulfilled.

They mocked that they would not have any more promises to give if the Ram temple was really built.

Today, with the foundation stone being laid for the grand temple for Lord Ram at the Ram Janmabhoomi, the Congress and its leaders have completely changed their positions. Rahul Gandhi has said that “Maryada Purushottam Lord Rama is the manifestation of the best human qualities” and attributed Lord Ram to love, compassion and justice. His sister and General Secretary of the Congress Priyanka Gandhi said that let the Bhoomipujan ceremony of the temple of Ramlala became an occasion for national unity. Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and Congress General Secretary became a complete Ram bhakt and went on to recite Hanuman Chalisa along with sending 11 silver bricks for the construction of the temple.

As Veer Savarkar once said “The day Hindus unite, Congress leaders will wear janeu over the coat”.

PM Modi quotes Tamil poet Kambar

Speaking at the Ram Temple Bhoomi Poojan event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi quoted the Kamba Ramayana written by Tamil Hindu poet Kambar. He said that Ramayana exists in many languages and people across the world read about the story of Lord Ram. He enlisted the various Ramayanas existing in different languages written by different poets saying that it reflected the unity in diversity of India.

“In Tamil, we have the Kamba Ramayana while in Telugu we have the Raghunath and Ranganath Ramayana.”, Prime Minister Modi said.

He said that many countries trace their legacy or affiliate themselves in Lord Rama.

“Indonesia is the country that has the maximum number of muslims in the world. They are having various unique versions of Ramayana i.e. ‘Kakawin Ramayana’, ‘Swarnadeep Ramayana’, ‘Yogeshwar Ramayana’ just like our country. Lord Rama is venerated & adored there even today.”

Later in his speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi quoted a verse from Kamba Ramayana.

“காலம் தாழ் ஈண்டு இனும் இருத்தி போலான்”

“Kaalam Thaazh Eendu Inum Irundhi Polan” meaning “we need not delay, we need to move ahead”, emphasizing that Lord Rama has the same message for today’s India and all of us.

“I am sure we will move ahead, our country will move ahead. This temple of Lord Rama will continue to inspire and guide humankind/ humanity for years to come”, Prime Minister Modi said.

Lord Ram comes to Times Square on Bhoomi Poojan day

The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya was held today with Prime Minister Narendra Modi presiding and performing the Bhoomi Poojan amidst the chant of Vedas.

Celebration across the country took place commemorating the return of Lord Ram from forced exile.

Hindus outside India too celebrated the event. Earlier it was reported that the Indian American community in New York had planned to celebrate this historical moment in Times Square by displaying images of Lord Ram and the model Temple in the billboards.

Jagdish Sewhani, a prominent Indian American community leader and the President of America India Public Affairs Committee in New York had said that these arrangements were made to celebrate the event in New York on 5th August. He added that a large gathering of Indian American community members has been scheduled on that day to celebrate the event and to distribute sweets to each other.

Mr Sewhani had told PTI that among the prominent billboards that are being leased for the occasion are the giant Nasdaq screen and the 17,000-square-foot wrap-around LED display screen, considered among the largest continuous exterior displays in the world and the highest-resolution exterior LED screen in Times Square.

However, some Muslim outfits like  Indian Minorities Advocacy Network- ImanNet, Justice for All, Coalition of Americans for Pluralism in India CAPI, North American Indian Muslim Association NAIMA, Islamic Circle of North America -Social Justice ICNASJ and a few other organizations like Global India Progressive Alliance, Hindus for Human Rights and The International Society for Peace and Justice filed the petition had protested against the ad companies that manage the billboards from running the images of Lord Ram or the Ram Mandir.

It was even reported that the said Branded Cities Network, the company that manages the ad campaigns on bill boards had refused to put up the images of Lord Ram.

However, to everybody’s surprise, Lord Ram beamed across the Times Square.

Ram Lalla returns from forced exile

On November 9, 2019, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi presented the verdict on the historic dispute of Ramjanmabhoomi (birth place of Sri Ram) and the ownership of the land at Ayodhya. The verdict stated that the 2.7 acres of land constituting the inner courtyard of the disputed land would belong to the Hindus and a trust would be constituted to deliberate upon and construct a Ram temple. The Wakf Board would be provided a compensation land parcel of five acres outside the premises. The title plea of Nirmohi Akhara, which had claimed equal parts of the erstwhile Babri Masjid land, was completely dismissed.

This verdict overruled the Allahabad High Court ruling which had divided the land equally among the three parties in 2010. But, in the same dispute both the Allahabad High Court and the Supreme Court also accepted the existence of a temple that pre-dated the Babri Masjid. However, the Allahabad High Court had gone a step further and acknowledged the disputed land as the birthplace of Sri Ram based on faith and the religious sentiment of Hindus. The latest Supreme Court verdict creates a historic precedent by correcting a wrong committed close to five hundred years ago, when the Mughal ruler Babar had destroyed the existing temple and built a mosque in its place.

Interestingly, in the year 1886 FEA Chamier, the then judge of a district court in Faizabad also observed in his verdict, “It is most unfortunate that a masjid should have been built on land specially held sacred by the Hindus, but as that event occurred 356 years ago, it is too late now to remedy the grievance.” Hence, the essential question that plagued the whole issue was, “on whom lies the onus of being the bigger entity and dropping the claim”? Throwing light on the issue, Swami Chinmayananda had once said, “there are only two kinds of people in our country – those who were Hindus and those who are Hindus”. The forefathers of Islamic people in India were Ram worshipping Hindus, and hence Muslims today must give up their claim to the land. In that context, the verdict of the Supreme Court has upheld justice without any bias whatsoever.

For the Hindus, the city of Ayodhya is far greater than just a piece of land. It is the birthplace of an icon, an avatara purusha, the very embodiment of the God being worshipped in a human manifestation. The fact that the sanctity of the place holds even today, despite the centuries of invasion by religious and colonial forces, shows the unswerving devotion and sacrifice of the people in following their traditions and culture. Thousands and lakhs of Hindus have struggled and withstood the onslaught of Islamic and Christian evangelism to hold onto and preserve all parts of the rich cultural heritage.

Could a similar fate ever be considered for the holy cities of Mecca or Medina? Or would it even be possible for Hindus to possess land there, let alone build a temple? The forces of imperialistic ideologies have dealt a cruel hand in India, destroying several temples and snatching by means of violence, religious property. For an idol-worshipping community, this is akin to removing the very anchor of their faith and denigrating the gods who were worshipped. In 1949, few Hindus stood up to this act and placed a Ram idol in the inner courtyard of the temple.

In 1992, after half a decade of mobilising and raising a call to reclaim what was rightfully the Hindus’ ancestral property, a revolutionary act occurred, albeit without the sanction of the courts. Communal tensions peaked and the country was thrown into a Hindu-Muslim strife. Comparing that with the outcome of the verdict, it shows how we have matured as a country. Though security was beefed up in all places, not a single report of violence or discord was reported. The maximum shrill was from the pseudo-liberal community online, who couldn’t accept that both the faithful Hindus and Muslims of India had accepted the verdict with dignity.

To take it a notch further, under the auspices of the National Security Advisor, several leaders of the Hindu and Muslim communities met together to deliberate on the way forward and on how to support each other in the path for reconstruction and rehabilitation. Truly, those centred in spiritual strength have shown clarity of thought and response, over those centred only on political opportunism.

The Bharatiya civilisation has seen not just this one upheaval lasting five hundred years, but thousands of strife and onslaughts lasting over several millennia. The living dynamism and the intrinsic tolerance of the community is proof of the wisdom of our seers and spiritual scientists. Through every bend and turn in this civilisation, we have only become stronger and wiser. This verdict is monumental for several reasons, including the fact that it sets precedent to correct some historic wrongs and wipe the mistakes of the past. Several Hindu pilgrim points such as the Kashi Vishwanath temple and Krishna janmabhoomi at Mathura still lay under the premise of non-Hindu property. It remains to be seen if course correction would be effected for the other places as well. Until then, it is about time that the judiciary snapped itself out of the colonial stupor and deliver judgments based on evidence.

As the days past the judgement show, majority of Indians are willing to embrace the truth for what it is. A passage in time where the whole ecosystem has conspired to put India First.
