This Republic Day, Sadhguru wants you to ask yourself this one question

Sadhguru, Founder-Isha Foundation, in his Republic Day 2021 Message, wants all the citizens to forge ahead with this one question in mind, – “What I’m doing right now, is it good for this nation?”

“I beseech every one of you, young or old, to take up this much. Whatever you’re doing from today onwards, whatever you’re doing, ‘What I’m doing right now, is it good for this nation or not good for this nation,’ please keep that in your mind. With this one thought, I am sure we, as a nation, as the Bhavya Bharat that it has always been, once again it can manifest in the next few years. On this Republic Day, let us take this commitment. Once again, we will make this into a Bhavya Bharat,” Sadhguru said on the occasion of India’s 72nd Republic Day.

Sadhguru says that we are, without an argument, the oldest nation on the planet; but as a nation, we came together not because of sameness of religion or sameness of language or race as most nations are made, we came together as the most diverse form.

Elaborating it further, he said, “Those who look at us from outside, think we are an impossible chaos. But our chaos is like, if you compare a manicured garden with a forest, those who have lived in manicured gardens will feel lost in a forest. But if you don’t tend to the manicured garden for a month, it will be no garden at all. But forests have been there for millions of years. So what looks like chaos on the surface is a very resilient organization of its own. Above all, as a nation, we have always been the land of seekers, not a land of believers. Seekers means we have invested in our ignorance. Understanding the intelligence of ignorance is very important.”

“In this living cosmos, what we know is a very puny little thing. What we do not know or our ignorance is of boundless nature. Our ignorance is really boundless. So we have always invested in this, that is why this is a land of seekers. This has been our strength – we have never been a very organized process, but individual genius always unfolded in this country because we did not believe anything. We were always seekers. This is understanding the intelligence of ignorance, understanding that the phenomena of life is always on full fire if you’re in a seeking mode. If you come to a believing mode, you settle down but when you’re in a seeking mode, you’re continuously on fire. So this fire we have exhibited for thousands of years, we should not lose this fire because this is where our growth is, this is where our future is.”

“We must bring this land to the greatness that it has always enjoyed through millennia. So it’s time to do that,” Sadhguru added.

What’s cooking between AP CM and the State Election Commissioner?

At the beginning of March 2020, the state of Andhra Pradesh was gearing up to have the elections for rural local bodies. The State Election Commission announced dates starting from March 21 for polls to MPTC, ZPTC, gram panchayats etc. By mid-March, opposition parties were beginning to demand that these elections be put on hold because of the onset of COVID. The ruling party folks took strong exception to this demand and wanted the polls to be held at any cost.

The State Election Commissioner (SEC), Mr. Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar, decided to postpone the polls keeping in mind the onset of COVIID. This was before there was even talk of a lockdown or Janata Curfew. The ruling party folks went verbally berserk. They questioned the intention of the SEC in siding with Chandrababu Naidu. They bought in the caste angle of the SEC and attributed his decision to him being from the same caste as Chandrababu Naidu. They said COVID doesn’t exist and therefore this move by SEC is nothing but political in nature.

While these verbal attacks were happening, the lockdown was announced. This put a full stop to all plans surrounding these elections. But this did not put a full stop to the machinations of the Chief Minister, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy. In April 2020, he brought in a Government Order that changed the term of the SEC, through which he was able to replace N. Ramesh Kumar with an SEC of his choice. Both the High Court and the Supreme Court intervened and reinstated Mr. Ramesh Kumar in July 2020, in what was a major blow to the Chief Minister.

With the number of COVID cases decreasing and also elections being held to state assemblies, the State Election Commissioner got ready to conduct the Gram Panchayat elections. He started seeking opinions of various parties in October 2020. The ruling party’s verbal attackers were activated again. The same people who argued that COVID is not a big deal in March went on and on about how COVID hasn’t subsided fully and the elections must be postponed.

January 2021 has been an eventful month. Sensing that this logic was not flying through, they came up with the logic that the government has to focus its energies on vaccine deployment and therefore cannot help in conduct of the polls. With the SEC being adamant, the employees then came out and said that they are not ready to participate in this exercise until they all get vaccinated. Employee unions started drafting and releasing statements against the SEC, Mr. N. Ramesh Kumar too! With employee unions refusing to participate and the SEC releasing the notification for the polls, the matter went to the High Court.

The Chief Minister received two major setbacks in the courts. First, the High Court ruled in favour of the SEC. The state government immediately filed a case in SC and till SC heard the case, everyone starting from the Chief Secretary and the DGP to the VRO refused to participate in any meeting the SEC conducted. In yet another slap to the Chief Minister, the Supreme Court also ruled in favour of the SEC.

It is routine for our Delhi based English media to cover every small skirmish Arvind Kejriwal has. It is routine for our South based English media to hype every small statement that can bolster “Kerala model”. Therefore, it is but natural that they did not want to cover the constitutional crisis brewing up in AP in the past one month. The crisis was precipitating only because the egotistical Chief Minister did not want the SEC to gain an upper hand. In hindsight, there was no way the polls would have been conducted in the third and fourth weeks of March 2020. The irresponsible and reckless statements of ministers in March 2020 haven’t yet been forgotten by the people of the state.

Is Jagan Reddy’s ego so much more important than winning the elections? Clearly, he is well poised to win majority seats in this election so what exactly is this noise about? Shouldn’t our media be more robust in questioning these undemocratic actions of an elected Chief Minister? Shouldn’t his arrogance and contempt towards a person holding the post of SEC be called out? Shouldn’t multiple judgments by the High Court and Supreme Court not instill a sense of responsibility in him? Is Jagan Mohan Reddy getting blindsided by the massive mandate he has received?

All these questions would have been debated if such a thing happened in a BJP ruled state. Or if Arvind Kejriwal did the same thing. Sadly, the machinations of the Chief Minsiter of AP haven’t received the due coverage they deserve.

The Broch of Gurness ― an Iron Age heritage site in Orkney, Scotland ― has been damaged in an incident of vandalism. A broch is an Iron Age drystone hollow-walled structure found in Scotland, used possibly as defensive and offensive structures similar to fortifications.

A stone slab which is part of the Broch of Gurness, and metal grille over a well in the floor were damaged in the incident. The incident is believed to have occurred any time between December 25 and January 7.

The police on Orkney appealed to the public for information on the incident. A post on their official Twitter page read: “We are looking for witnesses in relation to damage to a metal cover at the Broch of Gurness. It is reported to have happened between just before Christmas and 07/01/2021.”

The Iron Age site, which can be found on the northern shore of the main Orkney island near Evie, dates back to between 500 BC and 200 BC. It is considered to be one of the most impressive broch village site in Scotland.

Ever since lockdown restrictions were enforced in the country, the site has been closed to the public. The broch is popular among tourists and visitors.

A similar historic site in Aberdeenshire was also a target. In a spate of attempted break-ins, doors and locks at the Dunnottar Castle, near Stonehaven were damaged on at least two separate occasions this month.

Shocking! Parents bludgeon daughters to death with dumbbells

In a shocking incident, a couple allegedly bludgeoned their two daughters to death with dumbbells on late Sunday night, at their residence in Shiva Nagar located on the outskirts of Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh.

The victims were identified as Alekhya (27), a student of Indian Institute of Forest Management and Sai Divya (22), a BBA graduate pursuing a career in music.

The parents – Padmaja and her husband Purushottam Naidu – reportedly claimed that they had received a divine message to offer their daughters as sacrifice and believed that they would rise from dead.

Madanapalle DSP Ravi Manohara Chari was quoted saying in a report by Times of India that the family members had been behaving strangely ever since the lockdown. It was reported that the locals had heard loud and strange noises form the house on the evening of January 24.

When police arrived at the spot, they found the bodies of the two girls. One of them was found in the puja room while the other was covered in a cloth and kept in another room. Apparently, the parents had asked the police to to keep the bodies in the house for a day claiming that their daughters would come back to life. The bodies were later sent for post-mortem.

The DSP said that the couple seemed to be highly superstitious as the police found the bodies wrapped in red sarees and several ritual items at the crime scene.

It was reported that the father Purushottam Naidu is an associate professor of Chemistry at the Government Degree College and the mother Padmaja is a gold medalist in MSc Mathematics working as a correspondent of Masterminds IIT Talent School in Chitoor. Both have now been taken into custody.

Adult streaming website hacked, hackers sell stolen data of 2 million users online for bitcoin

Top adult chat and streaming website MyFreeCams.com was hacked by unknown individual(s) who then went on to sell a database of the site on a popular hacker forum. The database includes records of 2 million users of MyFreeCams Premium service, including their usernames, passwords, email addresses, and MyFreeCams Token (MFC Token) amounts in plain text.

The data was reportedly extracted from company servers in December last year by carrying out an SQL injection attack.

Screengrab of the threat actor’s post

The author of the forum post is asking for $1500 in Bitcoin per 10,000 user records. They claim that a single batch would yield the buyers at least $10,000, which they could make by selling premium accounts with MFC Token (MyFreeCams’ virtual currency) balances on the black market.

MyFreeCams confirmed that that the leak was genuine and the company has notified affected users and reset their passwords. However, according to MyFreeCams, their investigation “traced this data to a security incident that occurred more than ten years ago in June 2010” and “the exploit that was used to obtain this data was closed shortly after it occurred.”

“MFC’s current systems prevent any similar attack. Until now, MFC did not have evidence that user data was actually compromised as part of the incident. We have informed affected users by email and reset their passwords. No credit card information was stored or compromised.”

― MyFreeCams

With nearly 70 million visitors each month, MFC is predominantly used by amateur webcam models to stream live shows and chat with site members who can purchase virtual MFC Tokens that they can use to tip the models or watch private shows.

The hacker’s post has now been deleted, as the threat actor deleted their account from the hacker forum. They’ve also emptied their cryptocurrency wallet after collecting approximately $22,400 in Bitcoin for the stolen data across 49 transactions.

The leak could put all users of MyFreeCams at risk of blackmail and extortion attempts, credential stuffing attacks, targeted fishing attacks, email spamming and more.

Indian, Chinese soldiers face-off at Nathu La, Chinese PLA thrashed by Indian Army

Indian Army foiled a plan of Chinese soldiers to infiltrate at the Nathu La, following which there was a skirmish between the two sides, leading to a minor face-off. 20 PLA soldiers were reportedly injured in the clash while 4 on the Indian side sustained injuries. This comes at a time when the two countries are currently in their ninth round of deliberation and negotiation talks relating to de-escalation at the shared border.

It is to be noted that despite the harsh weather conditions that are currently prevailing in Sikkim, the Indian Army was able to successfully push off the Chinese. Nearly 50,000 troops of the Indian Army are deployed in a high state of combat readiness in various mountainous locations in eastern Ladakh in sub-zero temperatures as multiple rounds of talks between the two sides have not yielded concrete outcome to resolve the standoff.

The Indian Army issued an official statement regarding the same which is as follows: “We have received several queries regarding a face-off between Indian Army and PLA troops in Sikkim sector. It is clarified that there was a minor face-off at Nakula area of North Sikkim on 20 January 2021 and the same was resolved by local commanders as per established protocols.”

SpaceX breaks ISRO record, places 143 satellites in orbit

The world’s largest private space sector-major SpaceX has set a world record by launching 143 satellites, beating the previous record held by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) that had launched 104 satellites in a single launch in February 2017.

Elon Musk, who is the owner of SpaceX, has managed to accomplish this new feat using the Falcon 9 rocket, reports Times of India.

The mission, which SpaceX has called “Transporter-1”, marks a significant feat using the Falcon 9 rocket that lifted off from Florida’s Cape Carnival at 8.31 pm IST and placed 143 commercial and government satellites into space in a total of about 90 minutes.

The satellites placed into space include CubeSats, Microsats and 10 Starlink satellites. The mission started to deploy satellites into place after about 30 minutes of lift-off.

With this successful launch, SpaceX will be a major competitor for ISRO and the company only charges a very low fee of $15,000 per kilogram for each satellite to be lifted to the polar sun-synchronous orbit.

Elon Musk is also looking to gain a foothold in the telecom industry with his new venture, Starlink Internet. Musk told investors that Starlink is angling for a piece of a $1 trillion market made up of in-flight internet, maritime services, demand in China and India and rural customers. SpaceX has launched around 1,000 satellites for the service and is now signing up early customers in the US, UK and Canada.

Modi and Mamata spar over Netaji’s legacy ahead of 2021 WB elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) helmed by West Bengal Chief Minister have locked horns over Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s legacy ahead of the significant 2021 West Bengal Assembly Elections.

Both the West Bengal government and the Centre carried out imposing and extravagant programmes on January 23 to mark the birth anniversary of the freedom fighter and leader of the Azad Hind Fauj. PM Modi even flew in to Kolkata to attend the Centre’s programmes on Saturday, which was also attended by CM Banerjee. This is the first time Modi visited Kolkata on January 23.

While the Chief Minister took a 10-km stroll between north and central Kolkata, the Prime Minister’s programmes focussed more on cultural events and felicitating INA veterans. Given the growing importance of the state in the BJP’s political and electoral goals, the PM launched the celebrations at Victoria Memorial with a speech to the crowd sprinkled with Bengali quotes of Subhash Chandra Bose.

“Today I bow before the sacred land of Bengal that brought up little Subhas and taught him to grow through sacrifice. This land gave the country its national song and anthem,” said the PM.

The Centre’s Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India project, which focuses on indigenous production, would have made Subhas Chandra Bose proud had he been around, he said. “The nation is following the path Netaji showed,” he added. “Netaji said if you are true to yourself you cannot be wrong to the world. We have to make zero-defect products for the world… I often think how Netaji would feel seeing India surging ahead, its army getting modern weapons, planes like Rafale guarding the nation, vaccines being produced in India. How proud he must have felt seeing India giving vaccines to other nations.”

Mamata miffed at “Jai Shri Ram” slogans

Earlier, when Mamata Banerjee had risen to address the crowd, slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” were raised, which irked her. She then refused to speak, as she felt “insulted”.

“I feel a government programme must have some dignity. This is not a political programme but a government programme and it is for the public and all political parties. I am grateful to the Prime Minister and the Culture Ministry that this event is being held in Kolkata. But it is not right to invite someone to a government programme and insult that person. In protest, I am not saying anything. Jai Hind, Jai Bangla,” said Banerjee.

CM Banerjee stayed till the end of the event and took her seat alongside PM Modi. They were also seen talking. PM Modi took the stage shortly after but didn’t refer to Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to speak or her sudden exit from the stage. He mentioned her name as he mentioned all the other dignitaries attending the event, and referred to her as ‘behen’ (sister).

Modi released a collection of Bose’s letters, two commemorative coins and a stamp. He also felicitated INA veterans Nayek Lalti Ram, Dr BN Pandey and INA Colonel Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon’s daughter-in-law. He named eminent social reformers, scientists and educationists and even former President Pranab Mukherjee, who was awarded with the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian award, by the BJP government.

Union culture and tourism minister Prahlad Singh Patel was also present at the Victoria Memorial Hall. “Netaji probably did not get the honour he deserves. Today, events are also being held at Cuttack in Odisha where Netaji was born and at Haripura in Gujarat, where he was elected president of the Congress party for the first time,” Patel said.

“Why not four capitals?”

Over the last few months, the TMC chief has been painting the BJP as an “outsider” to Bengal, in a bid to pit Bengalis against non-Bengalis and to garner Bengali sympathy and support.

On Saturday, she went a step further while addressing supporters in her roadshow and mooted the idea of India having four capitals, one each in the north, south, east and north-east. Kolkata, of course, was pitched as one of the alternative capital cities.

Invoking Netaji, she said, “Like Netaji Subhash Bose, Bengalis will not tolerate insults. Kolkata was the capital of British India. Our contribution to Independence cannot be slighted. Why should power now be concentrated only in Delhi, which is full of outsiders? Why not make Kolkata a second capital? In fact, why not have four capitals,” Banerjee said.

“I am not being parochial or regional. There can be a capital in the Northern region in Uttar Pradesh or Punjab. There could be another in South, which can be in Kerala, Tamil Nadu or Andhra. A third can be explored in the east, preferably Kolkata. The fourth will be in the North East,” she continued.

‘Parakram Divas’ or ‘Desh Nayak Divas’?

The celebration of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s 125th birth anniversary has been hotly contested by the TMC and the BJP, as the Centre announced on January 19 that from this year January 23 will be celebrated as ‘Parakram Divas’. Banerjee further raised objections to the Centre’s move by saying that the name was “too Hindi”. She reasoned that a national hero from Bengal should be celebrated with names that are closer to their mother tongue.

Mamata Banerjee had said, “I don’t understand the meaning of ‘Parakram Divas’. We celebrate the day as ‘Desh Nayak Divas’.” She also asked why January 23 is not a national holiday, why there is no memorial for Netaji  or why all the files pertaining to Netaji and his disappearance haven’t been released, and added that the West Bengal government celebrates the day every year, not only in an election year.

Playing the Bengali versus non-Bengali card, TMC leaders have often said that the BJP is a political party from the Hindi heartland and that it is now trying to “usurp” Bengali heroes for political purposes. The two parties had earlier clashed over the birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda.

Netaji’s house sees renewed interest

Mamata Banerjee has also diligently been visiting Netaji’s ancestral home in south Kolkata – which now houses the Netaji Research Bureau. Prime Minister Modi too made a last minute modification to his schedule to visit the place. Several BJP leaders, including Bose family member Chandra Kumar Bose, also wanted to visit the Elgin Road house along with the PM. However, Sugata Bose, another relative of Netaji, reportedly objected to it. Ultimately, it was only the Prime Minister who went there.

“We requested that the PM visit Netaji Bhavan as head of the country and not as a political party representative. He obliged and took a tour of the house and the museum,” Sugata said adding, “The Bhavan is open for everyone. Anyone can visit it. But, we would like to keep the day (January 23) free of politics.”

‘Groping without skin contact is not sexual assault under POCSO’, says Bombay HC

Feature Image Credits: DNA India

The Bombay HC on Sunday said that it is not considered a sexual offense to grope someone over their clothes, since there was no skin-to-skin contact.

A single bench of Justice Pushpa Ganediwala made the observations while modifying an order by a sessions court that held a 39-year-old man guilty of sexual assault. The accused had allegedly taken a 12-year-old to his house on the pretext of giving her guava, and had pressed her breast and attempted to remove her salwar, reports Bar and Bench. The Bombay HC went on to say that groping without any ‘skin-to-skin’ contact is not sexual assault, because the criminal did not necessarily physically ‘slide their hand under their dress’.

“Admittedly, it is not the case of the prosecution that the accused removed her top and pressed her breast. As such, there is no direct physical contact i.e. skin-to-skin with sexual intent without penetration,” said Justice Ganediwala. “The appellant is acquitted under Section 8 of the POCSO Act and convicted under minor offence u/s 354 of IPC and sentenced him to undergo R.I. for one year and to pay fine of ₹500,” she ruled.

According to the report, sexual assault under Section 7 of POCSO carries a punishment of imprisonment between 3 to 5 years, while the minimum punishment for outraging modesty of woman under Section 354 of IPC is only 1 year.
