modi CERAWeek award

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a letter praising the woman who donated her kidney to an ailing orphan. Manashi Haldar, a 48-year-old woman from Kolkata, has donated one of her kidneys to a needy orphan. Impressed by Prime Minister Modi’s speech on organ donation, she made the donation in 2014.

She had also written a letter to Prime Minister Modi a few months later. Recently, Prime Minister Modi replied to her letter and wrote a reply letter praising her selfless act.

In the letter, the Prime Minister had said, “The special act of donating one of your kidneys to save a precious life has touched my heart. There are no words to appreciate this selfless service of yours. The virtues of compassion and sacrifice have always been at the centre of our culture and traditions.”

Prime Minister Modi added that this act of kindness was inspiring and appreciated that it would inspire many to go ahead with organ donation. He went on to say that organ donation is the biggest donation as the person receiving it gets a new lease of life, adding that, in our country where lakhs of people are in such a need, there can be no greater donation than this.

India considers allowing Chinese investment in ‘non-sensitive’ sectors amid disengagement at border

Modi Xi India China investment

India might, in the coming weeks, give the go-ahead to some new investment proposals from China as icy relations between the Asian behemoths are thawing due to de-escalations at the border, according to a report by Hindustan Times.

Chinese state-run media had last week announced that both Chinese and Indian troops had begun disengagement in the Pangong Tso area, situated in the Ladakh region of the western Himalayas. The disengagement was planned after a consensus was reached during the ninth round of talks at the military commander-level.

The disengagement follows a nearly nine-month-long standoff after troops from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) clashed with Indian soldiers at Galwan. Despite several rounds of disengagement talks at different levels, Chinese forces still remained in the Finger 5 area of the Pangong Tso lake.

Changes in foreign investment rules had hurt Chinese businesses

As tensions between the two nations peaked, India framed several policies targeting Chinese businesses and investments in India, such as banning dozens of Chinese apps, blocking China from participating in government tenders and compelling any Chinese company investing in India to seek approvals.

The changes brought about by the Indian government in the foreign investment rules mandate that investments from an entity in a country that shares a land border with India would require further government approval, markedly slowing investments flows from China.

This policy change had put in limbo over 150 Chinese proposals worth more than $2 billion, hurting the plans of Chinese companies in India.

One such proposal that was delayed was the acquisition of a General Motors plant in India by Chinese company Great Wall Motors.

“We’ll start giving approvals to some greenfield investment proposals, but we will only clear those sectors which are not sensitive to national security,” one of the officials said.

Earlier this year, a Chinese company was awarded a contract for a section of the Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS). The company had made the lowest bid in June last year for the project, but the contract was put on hold due to the border tensions. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) awarded the contract for a part of the Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) to the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company Limited. This Chinese company will build 5.6 km underground stretch between New Ashok Nagar and Sahibabad.

Last month, there was another face-off between Indian and Chinese soldiers at Nathu La. 20 Chinese soldiers were reportedly injured in the clash, while 4 on the Indian side sustained injuries.

Looking forward to more Chinese investment

The officials said that the ongoing discussions regarding the matter are private and did not give details of the proposals they plan to approve in the coming weeks. They added that the government will also look to clear some other brownfield projects – new investments in existing projects – that are not a risk to national security after the first round of clearance to new investments.

The government is reportedly also considering allowing some investment from Chinese firms in certain sectors via the “automatic” route, or without government scrutiny. The officials said that investments for stakes of up to 20%, in “non-sensitive” sectors, may revert to the automatic route for nations with which India shares land borders.

Shital Nath Temple in Srinagar opens doors to devotees after 31 years this Basant Panchami

srinagar hindu temples shital natth sheetal nath

After 31 years of being shut down, the Shital Nath Temple located in the Habba Kadal area of Srinagar reopened on Tuesday (16 February).

The famous temple was closed to devotees 31 years ago due to rampant terrorism and the persecution of Hindus in the Kashmir valley, reports Hindustan Times.

After nearly a lifetime of waiting, the temple was finally reopened on the Hindu festival of Basant Panchami. A special pooja was performed at the temple to mark the occasion.

“We used to do this pooja every year. Baba Sheetal Nath Bhairao’s birth anniversary falls on Basant Panchami and that is why we celebrate this day with fervour,” said Santosh Razadan, a devotee who came to offer prayers at the temple.

Hindus living in Jammu and Kashmir for centuries have been persecuted and many of the temples have been desecrated in various Islamic invasions of the region. Several ancient temples, including the Martand Sun temple, Sharda Peeth, etc were destroyed and the idols desecrated by Islamic invaders, while the original inhabitants were forcibly converted, enslaved and killed.

The rise in violence by Islamic militants saw a mass exodus of the Kashmiri Pundit community from the region. The region also went on to witness several acts of violence committed against Hindus by their Muslim neigbours.

According to figures released by the Jammu and Kashmir government in 2012, “Of the 438 temples in the Valley, 208 had been damaged over the years,” the state government said in a written reply to the state assembly in response to a question posed by a BJP MLA.

Srinagar became the epicentre of acts of Muslim vandalism with 57 temples being damaged, with Anantnag district a close second with 56 temples having suffered the brunt of Islamic iconoclasm.

New Chennai Beach–Attipattu rail line to ease traffic and boost connectivity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated two rail projects in Tamil Nadu, the Chennai Beach – Attipattu fourth railway line and the electrification of Villupuram – Thanjavur – Thiruvarur single line sections.

The fourth railway line between Chennai Beach and Attipattu – spanning a length of 22.1 km and traversing through Chennai and Thiruvallur districts – is likely to ease out traffic from Chennai Port, reports Swarjaya.

Laid at a cost of ₹293.40 crore, this railway section connects the Chennai Port and Ennore Port and passes via major shipping yards. This new line will give more operational flexibility for train movement and is designed to boost the connectivity on the high-density route of the Golden Quadrilateral.

Apart from this, electrification of a single line in Villupuram – Cuddalore – Mayiladuthurai – Thanjavur section and Mayiladuthurai – Thiruvarur section has been completed at a cost of ₹423 crore.

The electrification of the 228 km long route will save ₹14.61 lakh per day on fuel costs and will lead to the free flow of traffic without the need for a change of traction between Chennai Egmore and Kanyakumari.

In yet another welcome turn in promoting the inclusivity of transgenders is the appointment of over 13 transgenders in the newly opened wing of metro stations in Chennai. CMRL is employing about 13 transgender people in ticket distribution, passenger screening and arrangement at these metro stations. The undertaking has drawn praise from various quarters and transgender organizations. PFI arrested love jihad law Indore NIA Kerala ISIS

A Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police, on Tuesday, arrested two members of the notorious Islamist organisation, Popular Front of India (PFI). The individuals had allegedly planned a series of attack in the country on Basant Panchami.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Ansad Badruddin and Firoz Khan. Both Baruddin and Khan originally hail from Kerala. Security forces also recovered large caches of explosives, detonators, weapons, and other incriminating documents from the accused.

Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Law and Order, Prashant Kumar told reporters, “Ansad Badruddin and Firoz Khan have been arrested from Kukrail trisection in Gudamba area here. With their arrest, the STF has foiled a series of terrorist attacks in various parts of the country on Basant Panchmi. A huge quantity of high-quality explosives has been recovered from them.”

During their interrogation, both would-be terrorists reportedly told the police that their main aim was to train physically strong men of a ‘particular community’, by brainwashing them and using them when needed.

However, the PFI, in a statement, condemned the arrest of its members and accused the UP government of creating a fake narrative. The PFI further claims that its members had gone to West Bengal and Bihar to undertake work related to the expansion of their organisation.

Ban on cow slaughter comes into force in Karnataka

Karnataka cow slaughter ban

The ban on cow slaughter in Karnataka came into effect on Tuesday after governor Vajubhai Vala gave his assent to the ordinance of the BS Yediyurappa-led state government.

The much-awaited cow protection law bans slaughter of all types of cattle, except buffaloes which are older than 13 years and are certified as unfit for any utility. Convictions for violating the ban can result in rigorous imprisonment of three to seven years and a hefty fine.

Karnataka has officially slaughtered some 2.3 lakh heads of cattle in 2019 alone.

“Illegal slaughter is rampant because the old law doesn’t have teeth. There was a lot of illegal slaughter and transport of cattle to other states. We are trying to bring everything under a tight control,” said an official with Karnataka’s department of animal husbandry and veterinary services.

However, slaughterhouses will continue to function in the state even under the new law and the consumption of beef has not been prohibited.

The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill, 2020 was passed in the Karnataka Assembly during the winter session but got stalled in the Legislative Council where the BJP does not have a majority. The state cabinet was then forced to promulgate an ordinance, which would thus bring the law into force after the governor’s assent.

While the BJP in Karnataka – in line with the wishes of its party workers and Hindu voterbase – is looking to curtail the theft and illegal transport of cattle with the new law, the BJP in the neighbouring state of Goa is worried about a potential ‘crisis’ caused by the stoppage of supplies from Karnataka. According to estimates, nearly 25 tonnes of beef is consumed in per day in Goa. The state has only one authorised abattoir, the Goa Meat Complex, which is allowed to slaughter cattle. India is also one of the world’s largest beef exporters.

Beef consumption is also known to take its toll on the environment, having more of a carbon footprint than even four-wheeler automobiles. Beef requires 28 times more land to produce than pork or chicken, 11 times more water and results in five times more climate-warming emissions. When compared to staples like potatoes, wheat, and rice, the impact of beef per calorie is even more extreme, requiring 160 times more land and producing 11 times more greenhouse gases.
