Halal or Jhatka? NDMC makes it mandatory for eateries to tell public what meat they serve

halal jhatka delhi

In a major development to fight the “Halal Meat Mafia”, North Delhi Mayor Jai Prakash on Wednesday (31 March) approved a proposal making it mandatory for all restaurants, hotels, dhabas and meat shops to put up posters stating whether they serve or sell ‘halal or ‘jhatka’ meat.

“In Hinduism & Sikhism, ‘halal’ meat is prohibited. So we approved a proposal, making it mandatory for all restaurants, dhabas and meat shops in North Delhi Municipal Corporation to put up posters stating whether they serve or sell ‘halal’ or ‘jhatka’ meat”, Jai Prakash told presspersons .

This decision comes after the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) passed a similar proposal that makes it mandatory to declare whether the meat being served and sold by restaurants and meat shops is ‘halal’ or ‘jhatka’. According to the SDMC, appropriate action would be taken against the shop or restaurant violating this law.

‘Halal’ means “permissible” in Arabic and all Muslims only consume Halal meat. But Hindus and Sikhs who eat meat tend to follow the rule of ‘Jhatka’ where the animal is killed instantly, unlike the Islamic way where the carotid arteries of the animal is severed and the animal dies slowly in agony.

As per the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and the Sikh text, the Guru Granth Sahib, eating meat killed in a ritualistic manner is strictly prohibited.

Taxi services at Bengaluru airport disrupted after taxi driver sets himself ablaze

Bengaluru airport

Taxi services to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) continued to remain disrupted on Wednesday morning as drivers of Ola, Uber, KSDTC and other airport taxi services stayed off the road after a KSDTC airport taxi driver allegedly set himself ablaze near the terminal area of the airport in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

Although the injured driver was rushed to the Victoria hospital, he succumbed to his injuries at midnight.

The deceased has been identified as 35-year old Pratap. Other airport taxi drivers have alleged that Pratap took the drastic and extreme decision due to poor financial conditions. The drivers alleged that as taxi aggregators like Uber and Ola pay drivers ₹7 to 9 per kilometre to attract customers, other taxi operators are not getting enough bookings.

Additional BMTC buses deployed

In the absence of taxi services, air-passengers arriving at or leaving from the airport in Bengaluru now have to rely on private vehicles or Vayu Varja Services of Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to reach the airport.

A senior official of the BMTC said that additional buses have been deployed to facilitate travelers. “After taxi drivers stopped their services, we deployed 15 additional AC buses on the airport route. A total of 85 buses are running between the city and the airport. Depending on the demand, we will run more buses”, he said.

The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) too, in an advisory to air passengers issued on Twitter, has asked passengers to use BMTC buses to travel. Frustrated by non-availability of taxi services, air-passengers took to social media and demanded that BMTC run buses with more frequency.

Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy demanded that the State government intervene and end the price war among the taxi aggregators.

“The KSDTC is following taxi fare fixed by the State government, that is ₹24 per kilometer, whereas taxi aggregators were offering fares of ₹9 per kilometer. This has resulted in business loss for KSDTC drivers. The State government should initiate action against taxi aggregators and come to the rescue of the taxi drivers,” Kumaraswamy said.

Muslim engineering students who joined SIMI sentenced to life in Rajasthan

Rajasthan

In a development that negates the theory that lack of education and poverty is the driving force for Muslims to become terrorists, the Jaipur district court in Rajasthan on 30 March sentenced 12 members of the banned Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) to life imprisonment.

All of the convicts are engineering students. The court also acquitted the thirteenth accused person.

The Islamic jihadists were accused of working for the terrorist organisation, Indian Mujahideen, and were arrested by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in 2014.

Six of the jihadists are from Sikar, three are from Jodhpur, one each from Jaipur and Pali, and one from Gaya in Bihar. However, one suspect who was acquitted is a resident of Jodhpur.

These engineering students were arrested after the Rajasthan anti-terror unit received inputs from the ATS in Delhi who had interrogated some terrorists in the national capital involving a seven-year old case on a SIMI sleeper cell in Rajasthan.

The convicted terrorists were found guilty of buying SIM cards by furnishing fake documents, raising funds to wage Jihad, providing safe houses and shelter to terrorists and conducting recce for bombings, reports The New Indian Express.

“Development is the only religion for BJP, religion-based vote bank has no relevance”: Union Minister Jitendra Singh

development BJP Jitendra Singh

Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday said that “politics of religion-based vote bank” has no relevance in the country, and the only religion for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is “development and development alone”.

Singh accused the Congress of spreading false propaganda among the minority communities, particularly Muslims, “to poison their minds” against the BJP. The Minister also said that the opposition party has always exploited the minorities as a vulnerable vote bank and played with their sentiments, but was never sincere to them.

Jitendra Singh, who is a Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, said that in this Assembly election in Assam, those from the minority communities who were misled by the Congress party and AIUDF last time will vote for the BJP.

“A message is destined to go out loud and clear across the country that under Prime Minister Modi, the politics of religion-based vote bank has no relevance and the only religion for the BJP is development and development alone,” Singh told journalists.

The minister held a series of public rallies in minority community-dominated Assembly constituencies of Baghbor and Jania.

Singh alleged that right from the time of independence, the Congress developed its ploy to exploit sentiments of the minority communities in a bid to secure the maximum share of their vote.

“However, with time, this strategy was meeting the fate of diminishing returns because now the people are much more awakened and the majority of the voters comprised the third generation of post-independence youths who reason out their preference before casting their votes,” said Singh, who is also the BJP’s co-in-charge for Assam.

‘Justice for all, appeasement of none’ is the new mantra, says Singh

He asked why, despite 65 years of ruling both the Centre and the state of Assam, the Congress did not think of bringing about reforms like the law against triple talaq “for the benefit of Muslim sisters”.

“Has the gas cylinder sent by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under Ujjawala scheme ever discriminated on the basis of religion or caste and was it ever enquired whether the household where the free gas cylinder was being delivered was a Muslim household or a Hindu household?” Singh asked.

Some of the largest bridges of the country had been launched by PM Modi in the state of Assam “but was there ever any condition laid down that the bridge can be used only by a particular community and not by other communities”, he said.

“It is Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has sought to introduce a new political culture based on justice and requirements of the last man in the last queue, regardless of his religion or faith. The BJP is following the mantra of ”justice for all, appeasement of none,” Singh said.

A total of 39 and 40 constituencies will go to polls in Assam on April 1 and 6, respectively. Voting for the first phase of polls in 47 of the 126 seats in Assam was held on March 27.

Vatican official offered services of a prostitute to businessman who brokered £300 million deal

Vatican prostitute

The Vatican, the centre of power for Catholics and Catholicism worldwide, is again rocked by a sleazy scandal. News has emerged that a Vatican official offered the services of a prostitute to a businessman as a show of gratitude in the infamous £300 million deal to buy the landmark Chelsea block office in West London.

This information was given to the High Court in the United Kingdom.

As per the information that is available, Gianluigi Torzi, who served as the middleman in negotiations over the property earmarked for luxury flats, has since claimed that the Vatican lay official Fabrizio Tirabassi tried to thank him by offering a prostitute. Torzi says that he declined the offer.

Torzi, in written evidence to the Court also said that Tirabassi threatened him and the lives of his children.

The 42-year old businessman also claimed that Tirabassi boasted of blackmailing clergymen, after which he decided to report the matter to Pope Francis.

The judge in the London court had earlier slammed Vatican prosecutors for misrepresenting the investment into the real estate deal in front of the court. The judge reportedly wrote in his ruling: “I do not consider there is reasonable cause to believe that Mr. Torzi has benefited from criminal conduct”.

According to the Vatican, the home of the Catholic denomination was cheated to spend £300 million for the building in 2018 that had been sold for £129 million six years earlier. The accused Tirabassi, senior cleric Monsignor Alberto Perlasca and London financier Raffaello Mincione conspired to “fleece the church jurisdiction out of millions in fees in negotiations”.

anil deshmukh param bir singh

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday set up a committee headed by a retired judge of high court to probe the corruption allegations levelled by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh against state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

The one-member panel, to be headed by judge Kailash Uttamchand Chandiwal (retd), is given the time of six months to submit its report to the state government, an official order said.

In his letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, days after he was transferred as Mumbai police chief before the end of his term, Singh alleged that Deshmukh had given a target to collect ₹100 crore from bars and restaurants to Mumbai police officer Sachin Waze.

Deshmukh had denied the allegations.

The NIA is probing the alleged role of Waze, who was arrested on March 13, in parking an explosives-laden vehicle outside the south Mumbai residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani on February 25 and in the murder of businessman Mansukh Hiran, who purportedly owned that vehicle.

Hiran”s body was found in the creek in Mumbra in Thane district on March 5.

Singh had first approached the Supreme Court and later the Bombay High Court seeking a probe by the CBI against Deshmukh.

Earlier in the day, the HC said it would hear on Wednesday the PIL filed by Singh.
