Sikh trooper from elite CoBRA unit uses his turban to bandage his fellow commando wound

Sikh turban Chhattisgarh Maoist

In an exemplary act of bravery and courage, Commando Balraj Singh, a Sikh trooper of the Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF) elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) wing, used his dastar (turban) to bandage the wound of his fellow commando, reports Zee News.

The turban is a significant article of Sikh faith and is supposed to be never removed.

Trooper Balraj had also sustained injuries while fighting with Maoists in Chhattisgarh. However, he did not care about his well-being and his act of bravery has now earned him accolades.

His wife Yadwinder Kaur told the media, “It was terrifying to know that he was injured but at the same time I felt proud of his bravery and how he had kept the dignity of his turban by helping a person in need.”

His maternal aunt Ranbir Kaur said, “It’s nothing less than making a sacrifice for a Sikh to remove his turban – a Sikh’s pride.”

Balraj Singh’s mother Harjeet Kaur said that her only son Balraj had always wanted to join the army.

Maha Vikas Aghadi’s money collector: Letter from ex-cop Sachin Vaze sends shockwaves

Sachin Vaze

In more trouble for the Maha Vikas Aghadi government (MVA) in Maharashtra which is now being called the “Maha Vasooli” government, former Mumbai Police Crime Branch officer Sachin Vaze has accused former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Transport Minister Anil Parab of putting pressure on him to extort money from the contractors of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), illegal tobacco factories and bars in the city.

Vaze’s letter, which is now out in the open, has sent shockwaves not only within the Nationalist Congress Party-Congress-Shiv Sena government but also the entire country.

However, senior officials of the NIA remained tightlipped on the authenticity of Vaze’s letter.

In a handwritten letter to the Special NIA Court dated 3 April, Vaze claimed that NCP chief Sharad Pawar was against his reinstatement into Mumbai Police in 2020 after having been suspended for 16 years.

In the letter, Vaze, who was previously the chief of Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU), said that Deshmukh had asked him to collect ₹3-3.5 lakh each from 1,650 bars and restaurants in Mumbai but he had refused.

Vaze also claimed that Maharashtra Transport Minister and Shiv Sena leader Anil Parab had asked him to extort money for him, and he had met the Minister at his official bungalow where Parab asked him to initiate primary talks to get ₹50 crore from Saifee Burhani Upliftment (SBUT) to close an enquiry. Vaze in his letter also mentions how Parab told him to collect ₹2 crore from contractors listed with the BMC.

Mamata Banerjee accuses CRPF of bias, says policemen turn BJP supporters during elections

39 Listed Companies Among 2,227 Businesses That Relocated From West Bengal In Mamata Regime

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, speaking at a rally in Cooch Behar on Wednesday (7 April), accused central forces of asking people to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Banerjee then asked her supporters, particularly women, to “gherao (surround) CRPF personnel if they try to foment trouble”.

For what is arguably the first time in the history of Indian elections, a politician has openly accused the central forces – who ensure that the elections are held in a free and fair manner without any violence – of being biased.

“One group should gherao them (CRPF personnel) and another group should go and vote if CRPF personnel foment trouble,” Banerjee said at a rally in Cooch Behar. “Do not waste your vote. Your vote will be wasted if all of you gherao them and that is exactly what BJP wants,” she said.

She then went on to say that during elections, policemen turn BJP supporters. However, Mamata also said, “I respect CRPF, but have no respect for BJP’s CRPF.”

“I want a peaceful vote. People should be allowed to cast their votes. The CRPF should not stop people from voting. Who has asked central forces to tell people: ‘Vote for BJP’? Who has asked them to do ‘Modi or Didi’? I respect real jawans but not this BJP CRPF who are assaulting women, harassing people,” she said

The BJP claimed Banerjee had tried to create a law-and-order problem by accusing the country’s security forces and lodged a complaint against her with the Election Commission (EC).

The Election Commission has sought a report from the district magistrate on the matter.

Mamata had urged her supporters to lodge FIRs against the men in uniform “if they tell you that you cannot vote” and told women, to be brave. “These central forces are going to villages to ensure that women do not vote. So, my mothers and sisters, if you are told not to vote, will you listen? A single vote is more important than guns and bombs,” she said.

Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani hit out at the West Bengal CM for bring aspersion and disrepute on the integrity of the Central Forces.

After three phases of elections, Mamata Banerjee is now also trying to rally the Muslim votes. She has asked Muslims to vote for her and not split the vote.

The Guru-Sishya Face-Off

Vetri Nadai Podum Thamizhagame‘ and ‘Stalin Than Varaaru‘ , the two songs which have been playing relentlessly on TV, radio, YouTube and thereby in people’s heads have come to an end. Though songs for the party and leaders have been part of the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, the recently concluded elections saw a high pitched social media and brand building exercise for Edappadi K. Palaniswami and MK Stalin through ads which were crafted and executed by two people – Sunil Kanugolu’s Mindshare Analytics for the AIADMK and Prashant Kishor’s I-PAC for the DMK. Political observers tracking Tamil Nadu politics saw this as an election not just between the AIADMK and the DMK but as a face-off between Prashant Kishor and Sunil Kanugolu working to decide the fate of Tamil Nadu for the next five years.

Colleagues turned competitors

Prasanth Kishore and Sunil once worked in different places in the United States. There was a good understanding between the two then. Prashant Kishore came to Gujarat in 2011 to work on a state government project in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Growing up close to the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Kishor entered the field as a strategist for Modi’s victory in the 2012 Gujarat elections. Prashant Kishor established the Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG), a media and publicity company in preparation for the May 2014 Parliament elections. Through this, he slowly built up the image of Modi as the ‘next prime minister’. At that time, Sunil Kanugolu was part of Kishor’s team and working under him.

After 2014, Kishor parted ways with Modi and converted CAG into Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC). I-PAC went on to be the campaign vehicle for different Assembly elections – Bihar (2015), Punjab (2017), Uttar Pradesh (2017), Andhra Pradesh (2019), Delhi (2020), Bihar (2020). With victories in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi. With series of victories to his credit, every political party wanted to have him on their side.

Sunil’s tryst with DMK

Sunil Kanugolu left I-PAC in 2015 due to a disagreement with Prashant Kishor. Upon learning this, Stalin’s son-in-law Sabareesan, brought Sunil to Tamil Nadu. He became the campaign strategist for the DMK during the 2016 Assembly Elections and devised electoral programmes that appealed to the masses for MK Stalin under ‘Namakku Naame’ banner.  An entity named ‘OMG’ which was started by him had Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and Sabareesan as the other directors. Sunil’s campaign strategies made even late AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa take notice.

Although Stalin was not able to win the 2016 election, the DMK did not abandon Sunil. He was engaged for the 2019 Parliament elections in which DMK pulled off a clean sweep. However, after the 2019 victory, differences between Sabareesan and Sunil and emerged and by November 2019, Sunil’s ‘OMG’ bid adieu to the DMK.

Enter I-PAC

I-PAC was in the early stages of negotiating a deal with Kamal for 2021 Assembly Elections. Knowing this, Sabareesan approached Prashant Kishor. Prashant Kishor thought that working for DMK would give more success than Kamal and immediately sealed the deal.

News broke that an agreement worth ₹350 crore had been signed between DMK and ‘I-PAC’. For the DMK leaders who have been accustomed to visiting the field relying only on the cadres so far, the deal with I-PAC caused dissatisfaction.

Nearly 200 people have been working day and night at I-PAC’s office in Teynampet, Chennai. They had employed more than 500 field staff to collect data from all districts of Tamil Nadu. It is said that I-PAC interfered in all the domains – right from where to organize the crowd to candidate selection much to the discontentment of several leaders.

Sunil and AIADMK

Sunil, who had left the DMK, sided with Mithun, the son of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami. His ‘Mindshare Analytics’ company officially entered the field in February 2020 to help in evolving campaigns for AIADMK victory with a ₹100 crore deal.

But a section of the AIADMK were uncomfortable with Sunil who had been elemental in Stalin’s campaigns earlier. These concerns had reached Sunil’s ears who assured the AIADMK that he would never violate the terms and conditions mentioned in the ‘non-disclosure agreement’. Mithun who was very much focused on making his father Chief Minister once again did not want to pay much heed to it.

PK interfered at the ground level, SK dealt matters at leadership level

While Prashant Kishor’s I-PAC directly interfered with the political affairs of the entire party structure issuing orders down till the cadre level, Sunil Kanugolu dealt only with the party leadership. The DMK cadres did exactly what was told to them by I-PAC. But Sunil got things done at the ground level through Palaniswami himself as AIADMK cadre were skeptical about Sunil’s previous association with the DMK.

Like I-PAC, Sunil’s team at Mindshare were also involved in candidate selection process. It was reported that some of the candidates recommended by O. Panneerselvam were denied seats citing various reasons which had angered him. The list was later amended by including some of the names suggested by O. Panneerselvam. According to an AIADMK source, the Deputy Chief Minister had directly expressed his disappointment to the Chief Minister about Sunil’s interference in candidate selection. But Deputy CM Panneerselvam did not give an opportunity for any cracks in the leadership with the elections coming close.

Sunil’s team

Sunil has some people with him who had earlier worked with him in I-PAC working out of the office near the ‘News J’ office in Nungambakkam, Chennai. Although not as big as I-PAC, Mindshare employs about 100 people. Sunil also receives inputs from Jaffar Sait, a senior police officer and Satyamurthy, a former intelligence officer. Because of his I-PAC connection, some of the AIADMK circles have been distrustful especially after reports about the DMK chief receiving information about the government’s moves.

Was Sunil behind Sasikala’s move to stay away and Rajini’s decision to quit politics?

Realizing that it would not be good for the AIADMK if there existed two power centres within the party, it is said that Sunil had tactically stirred up the debate on Edappadi K. Palaniswami being projected as the next chief ministerial candidate for AIADMK.

Despite Ministers like S.P. Velumani, P. Thangamani holding the view that including the Sasikala was needed to strengthen the party and retain power, Palaniswami is said to have not accept the idea.

Not just that, even Rajinikanth quitting politics is being spoken of as Sunil’s calculations as Rajini’s entry would have eaten into the vote bank of AIADMK and the BJP.

Sunil, the Sishya upping the game against his Guru

Though Sunil has been in the game for a while, the 2021 Assembly Elections seems to have brought out the best in him. His master stroke on April 4 by publishing DMK’s atrocities in leading Tamil and English dailies in Tamil Nadu caught the DMK unaware.

If the AIADMK pulls off a victory, Sunil will be celebrated as the disciple who surpassed the Guru. We will know if ‘Stalin is coming’ or ‘Tamizhagm will continue its victory march’ on May 2.

Watch how Mrs Srilanka breaks down after crown gets ‘snatched’ from her head

Pushpika De Silva, who was crowned Mrs Srilanka, broke down after the crown was seized from her moments after she was announced the winner.

Caroline Jurie, the winner of the previous year’s pageant, took away her crown just after she was crowned, saying she was not eligible to win on account of being a ‘divorcee’. Jurie walked on stage and told the audience, “There is a rule that you have to be married and not divorced. So, I am taking my first step saying that the crown goes to the first runner-up.”

As the crown had gotten lodged into the hair of Ms De Silva, Jurie was found tugging at it, causing the audience to gasp in shock. A visibly upset Pushpika was found breaking down after she was de-crowned.

Following this incident, Pushpika had written on her Facebook handle saying that she was left traumatised after the incident. The post read, “As I write this, I responsibly say that I am not a divorced woman. If I am divorced, I challenge them to submit my divorce papers.” She added that she had sustained injuries to her skull from the incident. She went on to condone Jurie’s actions, saying,  “A real queen is not a woman who snatches another woman’s crown, but a woman who secretly sets the other woman’s crown.”

Arun Jaitley’s daughter hits back at Udayanidhi Stalin’s reply to EC’s show cause notice

Arun Jaitley’s daughter Sonali Jaitley Bakhshi lashed out at the recent reply by DMK Youth Wing Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin to the show cause notice issued for his derogatory speech during election campaign.

Posting on her twitter handle, she said that the statement was merely a coverup for all the lies that he had said during the election campaign. She went on to say that everyone at the BJP are working to put the nation of them and only such people get into leadership positions in their party. She added that nobody is ‘born a leader in the BJP’ hinting at the dynasty politics done by the DMK.

Udhayanidhi Stalin had recently been issued a show cause notice by the election commission which alleged that he had violated the code of conduct for campaigning.

In response to this, he had issued a statement, which had denied all claims of any form of derogatory speech that he was accused of. He further went on to demand the transcript of the entire speech that he was accused of making, and also asked for a copy of the official complaint that had been issued by the BJP to the election commission demanding that appropriate action should be taken against him.

Water ferries to soon be a part of Mumbai’s transportation

Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State (I/C) for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, chaired a meeting to review the Urban Water Transportation projects for Mumbai, Maharashtra. Senior Officials of the Ministry, Chairperson of Mumbai Port and officials of Maharashtra Maritime Board and other stakeholders were present in the meeting.

To promote eco-friendly waterways transportation and reduce the traffic load of crowded Mumbai city roads, 4 new routes for ROPAXferry services and 12 new routes of Water Taxi are planned to be operational by December 2021.

Currently, ROPAX ((roll-on/roll-off passenger) service from Bhaucha Dhakka(Ferry Wharf) to Mandwa (Alibaug) is successfully operating by reducing the road journey of 110 km to about 18 km by using waterways, thereby reducing travel time of daily commuters from about 3-4 hours to merely one hour. US may boycott 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics over China’s mistreatment of Uyghur Muslims

US Beijing Olympics

The Biden administration may boycott the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics as a mark of protest by the US against the human rights violations against Uyghur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang province, South China Morning Post reported.

The United States always sends a huge contingent to the Winter Olympics and now there is a coordinated effort with Washington’s allies to boycott the games.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price informed reporters and said that the boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics “is something that we certainly wish to discuss.”

“A coordinated approach will be not only in our interests but also in the interests of our allies and partners,” he added.

“We have consistently said, when it comes to our concerns with the government in Beijing, including Beijing’s egregious human rights violations, its conduct of genocide in the case of Xinjiang, that what the United States does is meaningful, what the United States does will have impact, but everything we do that is – that brings along our allies and partners will have all the more influence with Beijing.” Price added.

There are credible reports by human right groups that China has incarcerated over 1 million Uyghurs in “re-education camps” in Xinjiang province.
