Indian techie, pregnant wife found dead in US after neighbours see child crying in balcony

Indian techie couple dead in US

An Indian couple was found dead at their residence in the United States after neighbours saw their four-year-old daughter crying alone on the balcony of their house. The police are investigating the incident.

The corpses of Balaji Bharat Rudrawar and his wife Arati Balaji Rudrawar were found at their 21 Garden Terrace apartment in the Riverview Gardens complex of North Arlington borough in New Jersey which has just over 15,000 residents.

The husband appeared to have stabbed and sliced his wife in the abdomen as she unsuccessfully tried to fight him off in their living room, a US media report said.

“The bodies were found on Wednesday after neighbours saw my granddaughter crying in the balcony and informed the local police who then entered the house,” Balaji’s father Bharat Rudrawar told presspersons.

He also said that his daughter-in-law was pregnant and did not suspect any foul play. “I am not aware of any possible motive. They were a happy family and had lovely neighbours”, he said.

The couple’s daughter is with a friend of her father.

Balaji Rudrawar, an IT professional from Ambajogai in Maharashtra’s Beed district had moved with his wife to the US in August 2015 after they got married in December 2014. Balaji worked in a well-known Indian infotech company and his wife was a home-maker.

This is a second suicide-murder in recent days, that involved a child. On Saturday, a convicted sex offender died by suicide Saturday following an hours-long SWAT standoff at his home. Before killing himself, he had killed his former wife in front of their 5-year-old daughter.

Vigilance raids at houses of Muslim League MLA KM Shaji

KM Shaji

Raids were conducted at houses belonging to Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader and Azhikode MLA, KM Shaji, in Kannur and Kozhikode. The raids were executed in connection with a disproportionate assets case registered against the MLA by the Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau (VACB).

The raids began early Monday morning and were conducted on his two houses simultaneously. The houses in Azhikode and Kozhikode are reportedly registered under the name of the MLA’s wife, Asha.

Last month, a preliminary report filed after a Vigilance probe stated that Shaji had accumulated assets disproportionate to his income between 2011 and 2020. The report also said that his income had increased by 166% over these years.

Officials are looking into the source of the money that went into the construction of the MLA’s palatial residences in the two districts. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had conducted its own investigations into the MLA’s source of funds in this regard.

These investigations took off following a complaint lodged by Kannur Block Panchayat President Padmanabhan, who alleged that KM Shaji took ₹25 lakh in bribe to give official sanction for upgrading a Primary school in his constituency to a Higher Secondary one. It is also alleged that Shaji took ₹25 lakh as bribe for allotting a seat for a Plus 2 student at an Azhikode school in Kannur.

KM Shaji has been sitting MLA of Azhikode since 2011, winning both 2011 and 2016 Assembly polls from the seat.

Mudumalai sees bamboo rice boom after 40 years

After 40 years in Mudumalai, bamboo rice has seen a boom in production. Bamboo trees are abundant in the Mudumalai forests of the Nilgiris district.

The bamboo here is the main source of food for the wildlife including the wild elephant. Similarly, local tribes use bamboo for food and for building houses. The lifespan of such bamboo trees is only 40 years. In light of this, Bamboo trees in Mudumalai have begun to bloom after 40 years. In a few weeks, the flower bud will start to shed seeds from it. This is called bamboo rice.

At this point in time, the life span of about 50% of the bamboo trees in the forests of Mudumalai and the town of Kadalur is over. The last few weeks have seen a boom in the blooming of the bamboo blossoms. At present, bamboo seeds are being sown from the plants.

Bamboo rice is the staple food of the tribal people. Traditionally tribal people have been using bamboo rice in their diet. They are selling the rest of the rice to manage their livelihood. It is now a lucrative business for them as they get up to ₹800 per kilo. People from the neighbouring districts who know the medicinal properties of bamboo rice come directly and buy it from the tribal people. Collected from the forest and roadsides, the bamboo rice is then washed, dried in water, and pulverized to extract the rice. The rice is then cooked like ordinary rice and eaten by the indigenous tribal people.

Public complain against illegal church construction on government land in Hosur

illegal church lrpf landgrab

Locals in Hosur have complained that a group of evangelists have been illegally trying to build a church in government-owned land and have demanded immediate action to be taken by the tehsildar. This complaint was given by the people of Hosur’s Annamalai Nagar.

It is to be noted that earlier in the year 2000, similar attempts had been made by the same missionary group. But government officials intervened and had stopped them from building the church stating that they were not allowed to encroach on government-owned land for this purpose. In light of this, the people of the area have now complained that the group has now restarted the construction of the church on government land and that work is going on in full swing for the same.

The All India Vishva Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal have also intervened in this matter and have given an official complaint to the tehsildar, insisting that this be immediately stopped. They also went on to question how the construction was restarted after an official notice was issued by the then collector that a church could not be constructed on government-owned land.

Some among the public also sought an official confirmation or permission letter that was issued by any government official to the church authorities to construct the church and stated that unless and until that was furnished it was not legal for them to construct a church there.

Calcutta Quran Petition Redux: SC dismisses Rizvi’s plea to expunge 26 violent verses from Quran, imposes fine for ‘absolutely frivolous’ petition

Quran verses

The petition filed in the Supreme Court by former Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board chairman Wasim Rizvi on Monday (12 April) seeking removal of 26 verses of the Quran has been dismissed, Live Law has reported.

If the dismissal of the petition was not enough, the apex court bench led by Justice R F Nariman termed the petition “absolutely frivolous” and imposed ₹50,000 in costs incurred by the court.

“Are you pressing the petition? Are you seriously pressing the petition?”, Justice Nariman asked the counsel appearing for Rizvi.

In reply, Rizvi’s lawyer said, “My submission is that these preachings advocate violence against non-believers. Children are kept at captivity at madrasas at a tender age. Students are not to be indoctrinated. These preachings cannot be in the market place of ideas. I have written to the Central Government for action, but nothing has happened.”

Rizvi’s lawyer submitted before the court that the confining plea was towards the regulation of Madrasa education while claiming that the literal interpretation of certain verses preached violence against non-believers. His client had singled out 26 of these Quranic verses used as justifications by Islamist terrorists to attack non-believers, he said.

“On account of the verses of Holy Quran, (more particularly described in the Writ Petition), the religion of Islam is drifting away from its basic tenets with a fast pace and nowadays is identified with violent behavior, militancy, fundamentalism, extremism and terrorism”, the petition adds.

The Legal Rights Observatory also tweeted on the Supreme Court’s attitude to the case.

When Wasim Rizvi filed the petition for the petition, there was a huge outcry and threat of violence against him. Muslims even declared him an ‘apostate’, i.e., Muslim turned non-believer. Apostasy is punishable by death in Islam. A Muslim cleric had offered ₹20,000 to anyone who brought him Rizvi’s head.

The case is reminiscent of the petition filed by advocate Chandmal Chopra and Sital Singh in the Calcutta High Court, seeking a ban on the Quran altogether. An application was filed on March 29, 1985, under Article 226 (power of the High Court to issue some writs) of the Indian Constitution, asking the Calcutta High Court to direct the government to ‘forfeit’ every copy of the ‘Holy book’.

The petitioners had argued that every copy of the Quran is ‘liable to be forfeited’ under Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) Section 95 (Power to declare certain publications forfeited) when read with Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings).

Feature Image Credits: Revv

Association of Tamil Nadu Temple Employees urged the state administration to permit temples  to hold festivals which can meet Covid-19 standards.

In view of the rise in Covid-19 cases, the Government of Tamil Nadu has banned temple functions and religious congregations.

President of the association S Shahji Rao said disrupting festivals could lead to a revenue loss to temples like the Alagarkoil in Madurai.

“The prohibition of the Kallalagar procession in Madurai can result in a loss of revenue. The procession, which normally lasts four days, will bring in revenue between 50 and 60 lakhs. If the procession is banned, the temple will suffer a financial loss,” said Shahji Rao.
