Fatwa issued to assuage Muslims that they can take COVID vaccine during Ramzan

India J&J vaccine Quad COVID-19 patent waiver

As Muslims across the world start the month of Ramzan fast, a Fatwa had to be issued that validates Muslims to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

Islamic scholars had said this on Tuesday (13 April) as they appealed to Muslims to take the shots during the ‘roza’ period.

The fatwa was issued by the prominent Islamic seminary Farangi Mahal in Lucknow and it states COVID-19 vaccines can be taken during Ramzan.

Even UNICEF Sout Asia sent out a tweet supporting that the COVID-19 vaccine is Halal, although the makers of the vaccine have not received any Halal certification from any Islamic authority.

“The vaccine enters blood vessels and not the stomach. Therefore, taking it does not affect ‘roza’. Only because of ‘roza’, Muslims should not avoid taking the COVID-19 vaccine,” states the edict issued by Darul Ifta Farangi Mahal.

As per reports in Business Standard, the Islamic seminary had to issue a fatwa after a question was raised by one Abdul Rashid Kidwai, a resident of Madhya Pradesh who wanted the Islamic religious mandate if he could take the second vaccine shot as he had taken the first vaccine shot before the start of Ramzan.

That is why a Fatwa had to be issued to validate that believers will not violate any tenets of Islam by taking the dose during the period.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Grand Mufti Nasir-Ul-Islam also Muslims who are fasting can have the Covid vaccine shot without worrying about it invalidating his fast and according to the Mufti “the vaccine does not have any nutritional value and is allowed to be administered during fasting”.

“The vaccine is not considered food or drink. It would not give a person the energy to fight hunger”, he said.

Villagers along LoC rejoice as cross border firing comes down

People living along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir have always been victims of cross border firing and shelling. The Pakistani military and terrorists routinely attacked border villages . To address this, a ceasefire agreement was signed between the two countries in 2003 despite which shelling continued to happen. The number of attacks had been on the rise since 2006.

However in 2019, the India’s Narendra Modi led government scrapped Article 370 and 35A that granted special status for Jammu and Kashmir and the state was divided into 2 territories – Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, to which the Pakistan strongly objected. In response, there have been more than 5,000 ceasefire violations from the Pakistani side in the past year alone.

In this context, an agreement was reached between the Directors General of Military Operations of the two countries to fully comply with the Ceasefire Agreement from the night of February 24. Since then, cross-border raids have ceased. Infiltration across the border has also stopped. People who lived in fear of being bombed and shot at any moment, are now at peace. Children are able to go to school without fear. Men and women are taking care of their business..

After a long hiatus, in the villages adjoining the Poonch and Rajouri districts, weddings are being held with festive spirit. Absence of any firing and bombing for the last 46 days has given the people along the LoC a new hope.

TN Govt allows public worship at Madurai Temple for Chithirai Festival following protests

On April 12, the general public and devotees protested at the Madurai Tamukkam ground, demanding permission for the Chithirai festival. Protesters were detained by the police. A video of a woman involved in the protest has gone viral on social media.

The woman said in the video, “Why does the government always go after temples first, bypassing the mall and the cinema theatre? What will happen to the temple-dependent families if the temples are closed? Who is going to feed them? How will they survive with 2500 rupees a year given by the government? The once-in-a-year Chithirai festival should be held this time. The festival supports 400 families. Their livelihood will be affected if the festival is canceled.”

Chithirai Festival is an annual celebration celebrated in the city of Madurai during the Tamil month of Chithirai. It lasts for one month of which the first 15 days mark the celebrations of the coronation of Goddess Meenakshi and the Marriage of Lord Sundareswara and Goddess Meenakshi, and the next 15 days mark the celebrations of the Journey of Lord Alagar from Kallazhagar temple in Alagar Koyil to Madurai.

Due to the pressure from devotees and the general public, the government agreed to allow Meenakshi Sundaresar’s wedding to take place in the presence of devotees. The government, on the other hand, refused to give permission for Kallalagar to be immersed in the Vaigai river.
