BJP leader CT Ravi vows to restore 800-year-old temple in Chikkamagaluru district

As the demand grows to free temples from government control and also restore the neglected and dilapidated temples across the country, former minister of Karnataka and National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) C T Ravi has taken the initiative to restore an 800-year-old temple in Chikkamagaluru district.

C T Ravi who represents Chikmagalur constituency has adopted Sri Channakeshava Temple at Old Lakya in Chikkamagaluru district. The temple currently is in shambles with broken facades and bushes growing on the walls.

This historic temple was constructed during Hoysala era and a lot of work will be needed because of decades of neglect.

“Sri Channakeshava Temple at Old Lakya, Chikkamagaluru of Hoysala Era is in a highly dilapidated condition. I have embarked on a Mission to restore the Temple to its original glory. I seek the support of the Government, individuals and organisations to fulfill this Mission,” C T Ravi tweeted.

The Hoysala’s built some of the most beautiful temples and Karnataka is home to numerous traditional mutts and prominent temples that were once the centre of learning.

Generations of apathy and wonton destruction caused by the Islamic invaders left many ancient temples of the region in poor condition.

A team of researchers headed by Kottravai Aadhan, were carrying out field studies in the region. At that time they found a oil press stone hidden behind a thorny bush on a mound.  There were reportedly three lines of inscription on the stone.

Oil has been an important part of people’s lives in the region. Not just for cooking, it was used for lighting lamps in temples. In those days, one oil press met the oil necessities for a group of villages. The government also levied tax in the production of oil.

Rulers build oil presses or sometimes philanthropists donated them as part of fulfilling their prayers. In many of the stone oil presses, the date on which it was donated along with the name of the donor is etched.

This oil press that was found by Kottravai Aadhan and team was donated by one Kalaivaanigan in the Kurodhana year during the reign of Bukkanaraayar, indicating that the stone dates back to the period of Vijayanagar empire. Even today, this region is called as Chekkamedu (Chekku in Tamil means oil press).

This is the only oil press inscription found in the Uttiramerur area. Although it was documented by the government in 1923, the villagers have been unaware of the existence of this rare ancient stone.

At present it is half buried in the earth amidst the bushes. Only a small part of it is visible on the outside. Kottravai Aadhan has urged the Tamil Nadu Department of Archeology to take action to preserve this rare treasure.

This unique tradition is being followed for hundreds of years by a group of villages in Madurai!

Tamils all over the world celebrated Tamil New Year on the first day of Chithirai which was on Wednesday. On this special day, it is customary for Tamils to go to the temple and perform darshan so that they can live in prosperity throughout the year. As a part of this, villagers from seven villages in Thiruparankundram, Madurai district got together and organized a ploughing event called ‘Naaleru’ and ploughed the land belonging to the Subramania Swamy Temple.

This event, which is called ‘Naaleru’, is done as a sort of a prayer to give them good agricultural gains for the upcoming year. The people then went on to pray to Lord Murugan.

They nailed the plough to the end of a rattan stick and decorated it with flowers. They then fastened it to oxen and ploughed the land around the temple.

Following this, the people of the seven villages visited the Thiruparankundram Temple and held a consultative meeting on agricultural wages and agricultural issues throughout the year. The people of the area believe that by following the tradition of this day, there will be ample rains throughout the year and crop yield will increase. The festival could not be celebrated due to the curfew imposed last year due to the spread of coronavirus. But this year, the public in the area said that everyone was happy since the festival was attended by a large number of people from children to adults.

Udhayanidhi in disdain as Karnan movie crew snubs him

Director Mari Selvaraj’s film “Karnan” was released last Friday, in which Dhanush has played the protagonist. While the film was widely talked about among movie circles, DMK’s Udayanidhi commented on an incident that was reported to have taken place during the DMK regime in 1997.

Udayanidhi mentioned in his Twitter post, “I saw ‘Karnan’. The film should be celebrated without exaggerating the pain of the oppressed people and their denied rights. I spoke to my friend Dhanush, producer Thanu and director Mari Selvaraj and expressed my love and greetings. The film focuses on the 1995 Kodiyankulam riots during the AIADMK regime and shows that the incident took place in 1997 during the AIADMK regime. I pointed this out to the producer and director. They promised to correct the mistake in two days. Thank you. ”

Many saw this is an attempt to intimidate the makers of the film to give in to the diktats of the DMK Youth Wing Secretary.

Following this, the crew changed the scenes from “Karnan” to “1997” and “late 1990s” from Wednesday’s show. But the late 1990s was also the reign of DMK. Following this, Udayanidhi has expressed his displeasure on his Twitter account.

“There is no alternative to Karnan being a must watch film. I pointed out to the producer-director that the Kodiyankulam riots of 1995 were shown to have taken place in 1997. They also promised to rectify it and have done it today. Correcting it while pointing out an error in the work is welcome. Everyone knows that the Kodiyankulam riots took place in 1995 under the AIADMK regime. There is ample evidence for that. However, the movie shows this to have happened in the late ’90s, voices of dissatisfaction arose over the proposed revision. Kalaignar’s contributions to the upliftment of the oppressed people are immortalized by time. No one can deny-hide it. So, let’s get rid of this issue and focus on creative work. I would like to express my love and greetings again to the Karnan crew. ” Udhayanidhi wrote in his tweet.

Ever since the change was made, the hashtag #90களின்பிற்பகுதியிலிருந்து (from the latter part of 90s) has been trending on social media with many taking jibes at the DMK.

Many also congratulated Mari Selvaraj for not giving in to the subtle intimidation of Udhayanidhi Stalin and for exposing the DMK’s claims about social justice.
