The decision by highway officials to remove the 30-foot Anjaneyar statue for road expansion work has disappointed villagers near Panrutti.

Ayyanar Temple, located in the village of Kizhakollai near Panrutti, is one of the oldest temples in the area. There is a 30 feet high Anjaneyar statue in front of the temple. Highway department officials decided to remove the Anjaneyar statue to widen the Chennai-Kumbakonam Highway which runs alongside the temple. Upon coming to know of this decision, villagers in the area rushed to the scene to protest the removal of the statue.

Tahsildar Geeta negotiated with the protesters. At the end of the negotiation, the locals agreed to move the Anjaneyar statue themselves rather than have it removed by highway officials. The officials agreed and left without the statue being removed.
