DRDO to ramp up oxygen generation plants in three months using tech that was developed for LCA Tejas

DRDO oxygen plants

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will set up 500 medical oxygen generation plants across the country in the next three months to ensure continuous supply of oxygen and boost India’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The plants will be set up under the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM-CARES) fund, the Defence Minister’s office said on Wednesday (28 April).

“The DRDO is going to set up 500 Medical Oxygen Plants within 3 months under PM CARES Fund,” the Defence Minister’s Office said in a tweet.

“The Medical Oxygen Plant technology developed by DRDO for On‐Board Oxygen Generation for LCA, Tejas will now help in fighting the current crisis of Oxygen for the COVID-19 patients,” it added.

The oxygen plant developed and designed by the DRDO will have a capacity of 1,000 litres per minute (LPM), according to a Defence Ministry release, and can cater to 190 patients at a flow rate of 5 litres per minute (LPM). The plant can charge 195 cylinders per day.

Transfer of Technology has been agreed upon by Tata Advanced Systems Limited, Bengaluru and Trident Pneumatics, Coimbatore, who will be producing 380 plants for installation across various hospitals in the country, the ministry said.

120 plants of 500 LPM capacity will be produced by industries working with the Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun, belonging to CSIR, it added.

However, the most interesting aspect is that the DRDO had developed a medical oxygen plant as a spin-off technology of the ‘Onboard oxygen generation system’ (OBOGS) of the LCA Tejas. This technology was developed by DRDO’s Defence Electromedical and Bio-Engineering Laboratory (DEBEL).

What the system does is it breaks down molecular components of the atmospheric air to provide continuous oxygen to the pilot within the aircraft for long duration and in high altitude flights.

Three-day maritime exercise between Indian and French navies concludes

Indian French navy Varuna 2021

The three-day bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian and French navies – ‘Varuna-2021’ – has concluded in the Arabian Sea, the Indian Navy said on Wednesday.

Conducted from April 25 to 27 in the Arabian Sea, the exercise witnessed high-tempo naval operations at sea, including advanced air defence and anti-submarine exercises, intense fixed and rotary wing flying operations, including cross-deck helicopter landings, tactical manoeuvres, surface and anti-air weapon firings, underway replenishment and other maritime security operations.

The exercise, dubbed ‘Varuna’, has been a key enabler in building interoperability and strengthening the coordination between the two navies.

The exercises are an important cog in the Indo-French naval cooperation and plays a key role in the two countries’ joint vision for a “free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific” and a “rules-based international order”.

This exercise has matured over the years with increase in scope, complexity of operations and level of participation. Units of both navies honed and enhanced their war-fighting skills to demonstrate their ability as an integrated force to promote peace, security and stability in the maritime domain.

The common understanding of the two navies in executing maritime operations was evident right from the start of the exercise wherein the entire planning was carried out through virtual meeting and the exercises were conducted completely in the non-contact format.

“The seamless coordination, precise execution of manoeuvres, and accuracy in complex exercises characterised the conduct of Varuna-2021 and has helped further strengthen mutual confidence, inter-operability and sharing of best practices between both navies,” Commander Vivek Madhwal, a spokesperson for the Indian Navy, said.

Indian Navy’s guided missile frigate Tarkash will continue to exercise with the French Navy’s Carrier Strike Group (CSG) from April 28 to May 1, participating in advanced surface, anti-submarine and air-defence operations.

Kannada actress and Muslim live-in partner kill her brother and hide mutilated body in forests for objecting to their relationship

Shanaya Katve actress Muslim partner

In a shocking and barbaric crime, a Kannada actress and her Muslim live-in partner allegedly killed the actress’ brother in cold blood and disposed of his corpse in a jungle to delay the discovery of his death.

Police said that actress Shanaya Katve was in a live-in relationship with Niyaz, a small-time realtor. The two of them killed her brother Rakesh, for raising objections to their relationship.

Dharwad superintendent of police P Krishnakant said that the young actress was allegedly in a relationship with Niyaz, and the relationship was opposed by her brother. “Rakesh was a major hurdle to her love affair. Hence he was murdered and his body was burnt,” P Krishnakant said.

A charred and badly mutilated torso stuffed inside a plastic bag was recovered from the Devaragudihal forest area on April 12. Subsequently, a case was registered and investigations were carried out by a special team to nab the perpetrators of the crime.

After thorough enquiries and gathering inputs from various sources, it was found that Rakesh Katve, who worked as  a housekeeper in a bar, was missing for a few weeks. Further investigations revealed that the deceased’s sister, an actress, was in a relationship with a Muslim man named Niyaz. She had been living with him as a paying guest.

The police have arrested Shanaya, Niyaz and his three friends. They have all been remanded to police custody. Investigations revealed that even Niyaz’s family members were also involved in the crime.

“Prima facie, it looks like a case of a love affair. We have not come across their affiliation to any organisation but our investigations are on,” Krishnakant added.

Shanaya Katve has worked in a yet-to-be-released film titled ‘Chhota Bombay’.

Tamizharuvi Manian pens an overwhelmed thank you to Sidhha medicine for helping heal from COVID

Tamizharuvi Manian, the renowned politician who was recently diagnosed with coronavirus infection penned down a heartfelt thank you to Siddha medicine for helping him recover from the virus. Here’s what he said:

“I was very cautious and refrained from leaving home for one year from March 2020, when the coronavirus began to spread rapidly in Tamil Nadu. I spent my time productively, reading a lot of books to expand my knowledge base. At the end of January this year, I went to Erode to attend an event after following all the necessary precautions, and also since the intensity of the coronavirus spread was low. Just like how Kamban said that fate acts in strange and mysterious ways when Kumbakarna left for war, I realised that fate had dragged me to Erode.”

He continues: “Many took selfies with me when I was done talking in the event where more than a thousand people had gathered. I was persuaded to do so without a face mask, and I reluctantly complied. The price I paid for it was too high. When I returned home I realised that I was affected by corona. My wife, who underwent heart surgery and a valve replacement, also got affected by it. Since we were economically disadvantaged, we sought treatment from a government hospital.”

“After the test, the doctors told us that we were in the early stages of the infection and recommended that we take some pills and isolate ourselves at home. Even after ten days of treatment, the disease was far from being cured. After listening to my plight, Siddha doctor Veerababu, who was a friend of mine, came to my house to meet me, and strongly coaxed me into getting treatment at his clinic. Half-heartedly, I agreed to be treated at that hospital with my wife,” he added.

“The CT scan taken at his clinic showed that my lungs were severely affected. Following this, I got affected by pneumonia which took me to the brink of death. The whole body was burning with fever, and I had a splitting migraine the entire time that I had the disease. I struggled with a near-death experience for 13 days with oxygen tubes injected into my nose. I felt that it was my destiny to fall ill and thought I was on my deathbed, as it felt like death was looming before my eyes. It was then that it became clear to me as to how wise it was for Rajini to stay away from the polls without wanting to sacrifice anyone. The deep grudge I had towards his decision to quit politics up to that point vanished, as I had completely lost hope that I would survive this disease.”

He continues: “It was somewhat comforting that my wife revived back in good health four days after the treatment as her coronavirus infection was in the early stages. Dr. Veerababu, who assured me that I would definitely recover from the deadly grip of the coronavirus, treated me day and night relentlessly. He cared for me like a mother caring for a sick child.”

“Two weeks later, the pneumonia subsided thanks to the dedicated service of Dr. Veerababu and the nurses led by Mrs. Vasantha. I was completely healed by the treatment that followed. It was Siddha medicine that saved me from the deadly grip of death. But it is a pity that the government does not support traditional medicine like Siddha, Ayurveda and homeopathy. The question arises as to why the health sector, which last year tried to use Siddha, ayurvedic and homeopathic medicine along with English medicine against the deadly corona last year, is now relying solely on allopathy. My experience is proof that it is not possible for people without a strong economic background like me to get admitted into private hospitals and spend thousands of rupees. ”

He adds, “The hospitals of doctors like Veerababu are a boon to ordinary people like me who have no choice but to leave the government hospitals. Veerababu, who treated my wife and I for a month and provided me with three meals a day, refused to accept a single rupee from me. I left a sizable sum on his desk and returned home.”

“I do not always express my loss and pain to others. That’s why I didn’t report that I suffered from corona and had a near death experience. But, now, I am sharing with you what happened to me to educate people. As the coronavirus spreads like wildfire today, the government must turn to our traditional treatments in an environment where there is not enough space in government hospitals and private hospitals. The government should allocate sufficient funds for the development of Siddha and Ayurvedic medicine in the future. The Corporation of Chennai should immediately come forward to make extensive use of the services of Siddha hospitals. It was Veerababu’s Siddha hospital that saved my life and saved the life of Ponraj, the deputy head of the Makkal Needhi Maiam, who was Abdul Kalam’s advisor.”

“To conclude, I would like to say this. Coronavirus is deadly if we fail to notice at the initial stage. It has been a month since I returned home and I still do not have the same level of health that I used to before. I am not yet completely free from the depression that was caused by coronavirus. It is wise to follow prevention before cure. Do not hesitate to get the vaccine. Do not go anywhere without wearing a face mask. Social distancing is very important. Do not try to take selfies with anyone. Make it a habit of doing steam inhalation at home every day. Do not go outside unnecessarily. Never forget that the election campaigns of politicians are the main reason why the corona is spreading so fast today. Corona has made it clear that there is no political party or leader for the benefit of the people. We have no good helper other than ourselves.”

Canadian PM donates $10 million towards COVID relief in India

India is being hit hardest by the second wave of coronavirus infections. Oxygen cylinders and Remdesivir are in short supply in many parts of the country. Oxygen shortages are reported daily in several states including Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

In this context, the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau has announced that he will provide $10 million in financial assistance to India, which is engaged in a war against Corona. He told reporters, “The Indian people are currently facing a difficult situation. We have donated $10 million to the Indian Red Cross through the Canadian Red Cross to purchase ambulances and medical equipment. We are ready to provide more medical assistance.”

Trudeau said on Tuesday, “It’s something the Canadians are extremely concerned about as we see the terrible and tragic images coming out of India. We know we have to be there for our friends. We are there to support in any way we can, and those conversations are very much ongoing.” Meanwhile, Trudeau got his first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine a few days ago.

In addition to governmental measures, several NGOs have come forward to collaborate with their Indian counterparts to help deal with the oxygen shortage that is being reported throughout the country.

Wedding party from Hell: Groom and bride assaulted, elderly guests beaten up, priest slapped. DM who earlier gave permission for marriage party shows up and abuses everyone.

Tripura Agartala marriage wedding

In an instance of extreme high-handedness by a public servant, a Tripura family had to pay a price for continuing with a wedding celebration during the night despite appropriate permissions already having been obtained.

Tripura West District Magistrate (DM), Dr Shailesh Kumar Yadav raided the wedding hall in state capital Agartala on Monday night and stopped the wedding party, abusing everyone present and threatening them with arrests.

In a video of the incident that has gone viral on social media, the DM is seen shoving the groom out of the hall. The police personnel, accompanying him, beat up people before driving them out. When a woman presented the DM with a copy of the permission letter obtained by the family from authorities, which he himself had allegedly signed, he tore it up and threw it at her face.

In the video, Yadav can be seen physically assaulting the bride and the groom. He misbehaved with the elderly people gathered at the venue, jostling them around and abusing them. Not sparing the police personnel in uniform, he even showered the choicest of abuses on them.

“I am bloody District Magistrate…SA*ale…This is my command…”, he said.

“Go out. Let’s go out,” Yadav shouted as he pushed the groom out of the hall. “Book them and take them to lockup,” he ordered the cops.

“All these people, who assembled, violated prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and as such, they will be prosecuted under IPC Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant). All of them will be arrested right now,” the high-handed bureaucrat proclaimed.

Altogether 31 people were taken into custody by the police. They were let off later.

During the raid, he had asked a police officer to count the number of people present at the wedding hall. When the cop said the officer-in-charge (OC) of the local police station was coming, the DM lost his cool.

“Count and tell me. This is my command as the DM. You all are hand in glove with these people,” he thundered.

“I will recommend to the government to suspend the OC of Agartala West Police Station because he has not acted upon repeated complaints of people. I, the DM, had to come here. This is very shameful on the part of the police,” Yadav said.

He further ordered the closure of the marriage hall as well as another for one year for “violating orders”.

Meanwhile, the bride’s brother Subhrajit Deb took to Facebook to condemn the District Magistrate’s highhandedness. Deb informed that the wedding was being carried out after attaining all due permissions from the District Magistrate’s office itself.

Sharing pictures of the documents where permission to carry out the ceremony was granted by the Tripura West DM’s office itself, Deb confirmed that Yadav’s office had, in fact, granted them 4 vehicle passes so that they could move around smoothly (if required) during the ceremony. He writes that all these documents were signed by the DM himself.

Deb furthered that keeping the COVID-19 protocol in mind, they had gathered not more than 25-30 close relatives for the wedding.

“Is it illegal to follow Hindu marriage act in my state? Should we not follow the auspicious time (logno)? If we are educated fools sir, then its also uneducated behavior using un parliamentary language infront of a crowd! Its also inhuman to arrest kids and women at 1 am and taking them to police station when kids of 9 yrs age are crying!”, Deb wrote.

20 retired generals of French military sign open letter, warn of suburban hordes and civil war

In an unprecedented act of defiance, twenty retired generals, as well as several serving soldiers of the French military have signed a letter in which they have implored of the impending failure to act against the ‘suburban hordes’ which is a direct reference to the predominantly immigrant population of the housing estates which surround French cities – will lead to deaths ‘in the thousands’ as reported by the Daily Mail.

This open letter signed by former and serving officers of the French Military has enraged French President Emmanuel Macron who has threatened to punish generals who in their opinion are warning that the country is heading for ‘civil war’ because of radical Islam.

The incendiary letter reads: ‘France is in danger. Several mortal perils threaten her. Even in retirement, we remain soldiers of France and cannot in the present circumstances remain indifferent to the fate of our beautiful country.’  The term suburban hordes was a clear indication of the fast-growing Muslim population in France who tend to live in ghettos where even the police will think twice before entering.

The letter was published on the 60th anniversary of Algerian independence which was once part of the French colony. Back in 1961, there was a failed coup d’etat by generals who had violently opposed France granting independence to its North African colony of Algeria.

French defence minister Florence Parly on Monday (26 April) called this letter to be of “unacceptable actions”, and said the members of the military had flouted a law requiring them to remain politically neutral and ‘There will be consequences, naturally,’ while she had instructed the army chief of staff to discipline them.

Florence said, ‘The irresponsible column published in Valeurs Actuelles is signed by retired soldiers, who no longer have any function in our armies and only represent themselves.”

The open letter, published in Valeurs Actuelles, a right-wing magazine that claims a military coup might be necessary to stop a ‘civil war’ in France. However, this open letter has now become a political issue as Marine Le Pen, President of the National Rally supported the letter which was signed by 80 officers, as well as the 20 generals.  ‘I invite you to join us in taking part in the coming battle, which is the battle of France,’ she wrote in a response to the letter.

Le Pen is the leader of the far-right political party, the National Rally and her opponents on both the left and right described as a ‘call to sedition’. The lead signatory was Christian Piquemal, 80, who commanded the Foreign Legion. He lost all his privileges as a retired officer when he took part in an anti-Islam demonstration in 2016.

According to the retired officers, France was ‘disintegrating with the Islamists of the hordes of the banlieue [suburbs] who are detaching large parts of the nation and turning them into territory subject to dogmas contrary to our constitution’.

It must be noted that President Emmanuel Macron had taken strong measures to maintain the French national motto of values of Liberty, Fraternity, and equality and said in France blasphemy is legal and allowed the republication of Charlie Hebdo, the satirical weekly newspaper that ran cartoons of prophet Mohammad.

Isha Vidhya campuses offered as COVID care centers to TN Govt

Sending out a message of solidarity with the government of Tamil Nadu, Sadhguru, Founder-Isha Foundation, offered the premises of Isha Vidhya schools to the administration for use as COVID care centers. The schools are in Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Nagercoil, Thoothukudi, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Dharmapuri districts. In a post on his Twitter handle, Sadhguru wrote: “We are offering premises of #IshaVidhya schools to Tamil Nadu government as #COVID care centers with a bed capacity of 990. I appeal to the community to unite in strengthening the hands of the administration to overcome this challenge.”

His message comes at a time when Tamil Nadu is witnessing the second wave of the virus.

Last year, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev contributed ₹11.54 crore to  Isha’s community outreach efforts in villages around the Yoga Center in Thondamuthur. The funds were raised through online auction of three of his paintings. Isha volunteers used the proceeds from the auction to provide food and an immunity booster drink every day to thousands of people to protect them from starvation due to loss of livelihoods during the lockdown.

Isha volunteers continue to provide Nilavembu Kasayam every day in the villages, now famously dubbed “Corona Tea” by the villagers. The bitter herbal concoction has gained a huge following with even children gulping it down gratefully and several people testifying to its positive impact on chronic health conditions besides strengthening the immune system.

Isha also supported the local administration with medical infrastructure and supplies including distribution of face shields, sanitizers and PPE kits to frontline workers and equipping local primary care centers with necessary infrastructure.

India, Japan and Australia launch the Supply Chain Resilience Initiative

supply chain

Trade Ministers of India, Japan and Australia formally launched the Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI) in a Trilateral Ministerial Meeting on 27 April.

Dan Tehan, Australia’s Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister for Commerce and Industry, and Kajiyama Hiroshi, Japan’s Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry launched the initiative through a Ministerial videoconference.

The SCRI aims to create a “virtuous cycle” of enhancing supply chain resilience with a view to eventually attaining strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth in the region.

According to a joint press statement adopted in the virtual meet, the three countries “acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic was having an unprecedented impact in terms of lives lost, livelihoods and economies affected, and that the pandemic had revealed supply chain vulnerabilities globally and in the region”.

“The Ministers also noted that some supply chains have been left vulnerable due to a range of factors”, the statement added.

“Based on the high level consultations among Australia, India and Japan since September last year, the Ministers noted the importance of risk management and continuity plans in order to avoid supply chain disruptions and affirmed their commitment to strengthen resilient supply chains. Possible policy measures may include: (i) supporting the enhanced utilization of digital technology; and (ii) supporting trade and investment diversification,” the statement continued.

“The Ministers instructed their officials to implement the following as initial projects of SCRI and further develop the Initiative: (i) sharing of best practices on supply chain resilience; and (ii) holding investment promotion events and buyer-seller matching events to provide opportunities for stakeholders to explore the possibility of diversification of their supply chains”, the statement said.

The statement further said that the ministers had decided to convene at least once a year to provide guidance to the implementation of the SCRI as well as to consult on how to develop the Initiative. The Ministers noted the important role of business and academia for the Initiative, it said.
