Authorities in Govt COVID care centre in Erode demand ₹10000 to release body

The incident in which the family of a deceased COVID patient was demanded ten thousand rupees in bribe to release the body and made to vacillate for two days has drawn criticism from several sections.

Manikandan, who works as a sanitation worker in Shanthi Nagar, Erode, admitted his father Palanisamy, a retired Court employee, to the Government Care Center set up at a private college in Perundurai after suffering from COVID-19. Palanisamy succumbed to covid a few days ago. Manikandan, who went to receive his father’s body, was shocked when he was asked to pay ₹10000 as a bribe for releasing the body.

When he refused to pay a bribe of Rs 10,000, he was made to go from pillar to post in order to get documentation that would allow his father’s body to be released.

When Manikandan learned that the government care center would be unable to offer an ambulance, he hired a private ambulance which demanded ₹8000 for wrapping the body in plastic and ₹7500 for ambulance services. To add to his grief, Manikandan added that Aathma, the corporation’s electric cremation facility, charged ₹9000 to cremate his father’s remains.

Social activists question the government’s plans to address the plight of the families of deceased COVID patients, from whom money is being extorted at these difficult times.

Complaint filed against VCK chief Thirumavalavan seeking disqualification for misusing reservation

thirumavalavan antibrahmin rss hindutva hindurashtra sanatana dharma brahmin honour killing

The Legal Right Protection Forum (LRPF) has filed a complaint against Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan for misusing the provision of reservation by allegedly concealing his conversion to Christianity.

The chief of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) was elected MP from the Chidambaram Lok Sabha constituency, a reserved constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The LRPF in its complaint addressed to the District Collector of Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary, Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu and the Lok Sabha Speaker has said that the MP is misusing the reservation benefits meant for Scheduled Caste for his political benefits.

Referring to the interview given by Thirumavalavan to a Tamil news channel, LRPF stated that Thol. Thirumavalavan had openly admitted the fact that he is a Christian and practicing Christianity.

“In an exclusive interview which is available on YouTube, published on 24th February, 2018 by Thanthi TV he asserted that he follows Christianity.” the complaint mentioned.

The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order 1950 states that any person who professes a religion different from Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism shall cease to be a member of the Scheduled Caste (SC).

“Thus a person professing Christian religion cannot claim Scheduled Caste status. The Supreme Court of India in its judgement vide citation: Civil Appeal No.4870 of 2015 dated 29 April 2016, clearly stated that persons who belong to SC will loose the SC status if they convert their religion to Christianity and Islam.”, the complaint mentioned.

“It clearly appears that Shri Thirumavalavan is still holding SC Caste Certificate which is against the Constitutional (Scheduled Castes) Order of 1950” the complaint stated adding that Thirumavalavan hid the fact that he is Christian and contested from a the Chidambaram Lok Sabha (reserved) constituency.

“This is not only cheating the public authorities but also misuse of Reservations which are meant for welfare of the people of weaker sections of this society. ” LRPF stated in the complaint.

The complaint also noted that Thirumavalavan is notoriously known for abusing Hinduism and Hindu Gods. It pointed out to the instance, where Thirumavalavan in a public meeting said “Siva, Vishnu, didn’t come when huts of Scheduled Caste People were burnt, what is wrong in moving towards Jesus.”

“In the view of above facts and circumstances, we request you to take appropriate action and deliver justice to the people of Scheduled Caste Community.”, the complaint concluded.

Recently in February 2021, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha  said that as per the Constitution of India and Indian statute, Hindu persons eligible for reservation benefits, like those belonging to Scheduled Castes, cannot avail the same benefits if they convert to Christianity or Islam.

PM Modi to hire HR firm to overhaul bureaucracy in India under mission Mission Karmayogi

modi assam west bengal

In a serious attempt to overhaul the bureaucracy by studying the organisational structures, the Centre government is set to hire a leading human resources (HR) consultancy firm.

The new HR firm will be studying the bureaucracy, its organisational structures, and the work allocation documents of seven key ministries and departments, reports News18.

This bold initiative will be under the “Mission Karmayogi” as the HR consultancy will be onboarded under the direct supervision of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.

“The unique challenges and opportunities in India, along with an unprecedented digital penetration and IT literate workforce, have necessitated creation of a framework that is unique to the world and has not been attempted before,” the bid document says.

“FRAC will map the roles and activities corresponding to every government position with their desired competencies across behavioral attributes, functional skills, and domain knowledge. Each competency will have multiple levels of proficiency, organized in a stepped manner depicting gradual progression from one level to the other,” the document adds.

“Through the FRAC, officials will have visibility of the roles, activities, and competencies required to effectively deliver on the outcomes expected from them with respect to their current or future positions in government. This will enable the establishment of testing arrangements to assess the extent to which a person occupying a position has these competencies and consequently determine the competency gaps that need to be addressed. Largely, this will be done through iGOT Karmayogi, an online comprehensive learning platform cum marketplace to deliver online training, linked to FRAC,” the document says.

The ministries and departments which will be studied by the appointed HR consultancy will be the Ministry of Finance (Department of Economic Affairs), the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, the Ministry of Rural Development, the Ministry of Health, NHAI, Ministry of Environment and Forests, and Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

The task for the consultancy firm will be to design and develop a Framework of Roles, Activities & Competencies (FRAC) for the Centre with a focus on preparing a “fit-for-future” civil service for the nation.

The Request for proposal (RFP) was issued two days ago and the bidder will also need to carry out an “end to end FRACing exercise” for the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions (DoPT) and the Ministry of Finance (Department of Economic Affairs).

Four top lawyers flown from London to Dominica to stop extradition of Mehul Choksi

In a desperate attempt to stop the extradition of economic offender Mehul Choksi from Dominica to India, four lawyers have been flown into Dominica from London, reports Hindustan Times.

The timing seems to be a suspect as Choksi’s extradition hearing is scheduled on 2nd June in Dominica’s Commonwealth Court of Justice as he moved a habeas corpus plea before the said court against his extradition.

Presently, Choksi is admitted to a hospital in Dominica after he was reported missing from Antigua and Barbuda. However, there are reports that Choksi may have taken his girlfriend on a romantic trip to Dominica, where he was arrested.

Choksi has been accused of embezzling 13 thousand crore rupees and the Enforcement Directorate will petition before the court that Choksi is an Indian citizen and that he should be deported to India who also has a Red Corner Notice (RCN) from Interpol issued against him.

Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne on Saturday said, “We live in a globalised world where cooperation among states is required to fight and defeat criminals and to deny criminals the use of the state apparatus for protection and advancement of their criminal conduct. That is precisely why we have and continue to encourage the government of Dominica, to make him persona non grata for illegally entering their country and to deport him to India where he is still a citizen,’.

Saudi Arabia fully committed to meet India’s requirement for petroleum products

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which is the world’s largest exporter of crude oil yesterday (30 May) said that it is fully committed to meet India’s requirement for petroleum products, reports Economic Times.

India is one of the key importers of oil from Saudi Arabia and wants cuts in crude oil prices.

Saudi Ambassador to India Dr Saud bin Mohammed Al Sati said that the energy cooperation between the two countries has been going very well and it has been further reinforced during the recent and ongoing communications between Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Minister of Energy and his counterpart Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Al Sati made the comments in response to a question on Saudi Arabia’s position on India pressing for easing the cuts in crude oil production by OPEC and OPEC+ groupings as high oil prices are hurting the consumption-led recovery of several countries like India.

During an interview with PTI, the Ambassador also shared that Saudi Arabia had made investments of $2.81 billion in India in 2020 alone and that it is looking at a greater momentum in the bilateral economic ties in areas like petroleum, renewable energy, information technology, and artificial intelligence.

India’s relationship with Saudi Arabia has been on the upswing in the last few years as this oil-rich nation sees India as its strategic partner.

PTR stoops to a new low: Abuses and makes personal attack on BJP woman MLA Vanathi Srinivasan

In what can be called as a behaviour unbefitting for a person holding public office, Madurai Central MLA and Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan unleashed abuses and made personal attacks on Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan who had called out the former for insulting Goa during the 43rd GSR Council meeting.

Goa’s Transport Minister, Mauvin Godinho had stated in a press conference that Palanivel Thiagarajan, insulted Goa during the GST meeting by stating that because Goa is a small state, its views should not be given weightage.

Godinho later in a tweet stated, “I want to remind the new Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. Palanivel, refrain from conducting yourself in a manner as a big brother versus small brother or big state versus small state. We all have equal rights. His attitude should be condemned by one and all right-thinking people. He should not target Goa.”

He demanded an apology from Palanivel Thiagarajan for disrespecting smaller states, including Goa, at the meeting.

To this, Thiagarajan issued a long statement in which he justified his stance at the GST Council meeting stating that ‘one state one vote’ and is fundamentally unfair and added that ‘Dravidian Movement’ was always for ‘States Rights’. He said that his entire statement during the meeting was consistent with these two principles.

He also went on to disclose certain proceedings of the meeting public through his statement in order to state that he was not against the interests of Goa.

Unbecoming of a person holding an esteemed public office, Palanivel Thiagarajan went on to make personal attacks on Goa’s Transport Minister.

Following this, Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan condemned the behaviour of Palanivel Thiagarajan’s behaviour at the GST Council meeting and called it an insult to democracy.

To this, the MIT educated Finance Minister remarked if the BJP woman MLA was a ‘congenital liar’ or a person with ‘low IQ’.

The Finance Minister had later blocked the BJP woman MLA.

Palanivel Thiagarajan put out a derogatory post unbefitting of a person holding public office saying “I block you like a normal person closes a window to avoid bad smell”.

Later, Vanathi Srinivasan had put out a dignified response holding up the mirror to the ‘MIT educated’ Finance Minister saying that the latter lacked ‘political maturity’ and ‘social etiquette’.

This is not the first time PTR has gone on a rant against public personalities who does not confirm to his views. Palanivel Thiagarajan had earlier picked fight with Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev over the latter’s demand for freeing temples from state control. This had led to spat with two other public personalities namely former Infosys director Mohandas Pai and The Hindu’s Malini Parthasarathy.
