YS Jagan Reddy and his YSRCP (YSR Congress Party) party’s brand of politicking has landed the 1st time chief minister and his fairly new party in serious trouble, earlier than expected. Both political observers as well as ordinary people had predicted that Jagan and his party would experience short-lived success on account of his childish tantrums and his immature, anger driven actions, often leading to several acts of violent physical harm on people he considers his personal, political or business enemies. Several of his political and financial actions are already in question and under legal investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In the latest instance of allegations of phone tapping on his own party’s leaders, one of his better known MLAs, Kottam Reddy of rural Nellore, has resigned in strong protest and expressed support for Jagan Reddy’s arch nemesis, Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) party. The MLA mentioned that other leaders of the YSRCP party were also aware of their phones being under surveillance by members of their own political party/ Jagan’s close aides. Kottam Reddy has claimed that phones of high court judges and media personnel are also being tapped.
In the meanwhile, CBI slueths working on Jagan’s alleged involvement in his own paternal uncle’s murder with the help of one of his cousins, YS Avinash Reddy (MP from Kadapa district), recently released news of new evidence based on having traced Avinash’s phone calls to a man called Naveen, who has worked at the residence of Jagan Reddy for about 15 years and continues to work for the family. A few months ago, the CBI had also requested the Supreme Court to deny bail to another prime accused in the murder case, currently in jail, on the grounds that the lives of key witnesses were at stake and some of their own officers had received threats.
Unfortunately for Jagan, the case appears to be making progress inspite of the heavy personal and political mafia-style threats of Jagan/ his henchmen.
Aside from his behavioural issues, his dictatorial style in managing the YSRCP party and the state of Andhra Pradesh makes headlines regularly in the Telugu states of Andhra and Telangana. Many of his trusted aides and ministers have a history of open, blatant misbehaviour, violence and personal/political vendetta.
There have been allegations of rape, arson, extortion and murder lodged against leaders of his party. Many concerned citizens have raised their voices against a significant flow of funds to his party from illegal sources of income such as liquor bootlegging, drug smuggling, gambling rackets and back-office bribes from private businesses including educational institutions, apart from their regular contributions to politicians.
Favoritism, unhealthy competition within the party’s rank & file and a culture of encouraging party leaders to snoop on each other, is bringing Jagan Reddy and his party down faster than the public expected it eventually would, within a decade.
Given Jagan Reddy’s personal history of several financial irregularities and personal revenge-motivated acts of physical intimidation, and violence, it wasn’t a surprise that Jagan’s fledgling party would attract, shield and protect people like himself looking for “high returns” financially and politically, within a short period of time. Inspite of large, obvious, hard-to-ignore flaws, he was able to attract the votes of the economically lower classes primarily based on minority appeasement politics and a big basket of all types of unrealistic sops/ welfare schemes. Jagan Reddy is a Christian and tapped into a
well-organized network of christian organizations, requesting them to vote for a fellow christian. His strategy based on advice by the controversial, political strategist Prashant Kishore, worked in keeping the Hindu vote bank as well as the working middle classes, divided in the 2019 state elections.
Can he play the same, predictable political cards in the next Andhra state elections, due to be held in the first half of 2024? From the looks of it and based on regular news reports from the Telugu states of Andhra and Telangana, it appears that the Andhra people including government employees, minorities, women, the lower classes and the youth, have grown disappointed with the following: the YSRCP government’s lack of proper governance, law and order issues, lack of job opportunities and business investments, low to none/ unfair disbursement of promised welfare schemes, fallen levels of educational aid, structure and standards, increased vandalism of Hindu temples, increased levels of illegal christian conversion activities, open instances of illegal grabbing/selling of government land and resources, delayed or partial payments in employee salaries, pensions and health schemes at all levels, poor maintenance of roads infrastructure, poor response to natural disasters, freeze in the development of the Capital region etc.
While the above mentioned and more have been in the news for a couple of years now, the newer happenings concerning Jagan Reddy himself, have political analysts questioning his political future and that of the survival of his party. Are things spiraling out of Jagan’s control? Some of his strongest leaders are fighting amongst themselves in full view of the public, Jagan’s alleged involvement in the murder of his own paternal uncle is in the news again, as the case, now being investigated by the CBI with close monitoring by the Supreme Court, may yield evidence sooner than expected. After a short gap, the CBI is also pursuing the 30 plus cases of massive financial irregularities and criminal conspiracies registered against him a few years ago, on account of which Jagan Reddy had spent more than a year in jail before being granted bail. More recently, Jagan has been in the news for all the wrong reasons- the CBI has traced the Delhi Liquorgate scandal to a few of his top advisors and party members, his links to the infamous Andhra – Karnataka border, coal mining scam of the Gali Reddy brothers, is receiving renewed attention, his use of force, violence and police interference in trying to stop political rallies of the Opposition parties has backfired heavily, his plans of discontinuing developmental work in the previously declared capital city of Amaravathi is still being fought in the High Court, various employee associations have held several protests, his unseaonable, vengence-motivated political actions, crass remarks on opposition leaders and their family members have alienated him from all opposition parties as well as the general public and his own mother and sister have stopped extending unconditional support to him.
Is the end of a short, controversial political story, near? Is there a dooms day writing on the wall?
