Authorities have removed animal slaughter waste that was allegedly being dumped near the historic Arulmigu Vaacheeswarar Shiva Temple at Thirupachur in Tiruvallur district following protests by Hindu Munnani and local devotees, as reported in Organiser.
The issue came to light after meat and bone waste was allegedly found dumped along the outer walls of the nearly 1,800-year-old Shiva temple, triggering protests over concerns relating to the sanctity of the temple premises and public health.
According to Hindu Munnani functionaries, the rotting animal waste created a foul smell in the area and attracted stray dogs, which reportedly dragged bone fragments into the temple premises. The organisation alleged that the dumping had affected the temple environment and posed difficulties for devotees visiting the shrine. It also claimed that vacant land protected by a compound wall was available nearby, but unidentified persons had instead chosen to dump slaughter waste adjacent to the temple.
Following complaints from devotees, Hindu Munnani Tiruvallur district president M. Vinodh Khanna, district general secretary Venkatesan and other functionaries inspected the site and submitted a petition to the District Collector. They urged the district administration to prevent similar incidents in the future and initiate legal action against those responsible for dumping the waste.
The Tamil Nadu BJP also condemned the incident, alleging that the dumping of animal slaughter waste had hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. The party called upon the authorities to identify those responsible and take strict action against them.
Subsequently, the district administration removed the animal waste from the area surrounding the temple. Hindu Munnani has further urged the administration not to permit slaughterhouses, meat shops, chicken stalls or similar establishments within a 500-metre radius of the temple premises.
Temple Land Retrieved In Coimbatore Following Hindu Munnani Protest
In a separate development, Hindu Munnani announced that around six acres of land belonging to the Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal Temple at Narasimhan Naicken Palayam in Coimbatore North had been retrieved following another protest by the organisation.
According to the organisation, it had announced a protest over the alleged encroachment of the temple land earlier in the day, following which a petition was submitted to the authorities. Later that afternoon, officials reportedly took possession of the land.
Hindu Munnani alleged that the land, estimated to be worth around ₹200 crore, had been under the occupation of a private entity identified as Emerald. It further claimed that the property had been commercially utilised for activities including cricket tournaments, for which entry fees were allegedly collected, and driving lessons conducted for a fee.
The organisation described the retrieval of the land as a significant step towards protecting temple properties and called for continued action against illegal encroachments on religious institutions across Tamil Nadu.
