A couple from Chennai was arrested after a video of them verbally abusing night patrol police officers and making threats went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage. The incident occurred on Loop Road, near Marina Beach, when Chandramohan and Dhanalakshmi were stopped by police officers during a routine night patrol. What initially began as a standard inquiry quickly escalated into a highly charged confrontation.
The police approached the couple’s vehicle for questioning, but they responded aggressively. Chandramohan, who runs a car dealership in Velachery, began insulting the officers, using vulgar language, and even referred to one of them as “looking like a lizard.” At one point, he boasted about his connections with Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, claiming that if he called Stalin, the officers would face serious consequences. “Your Station Police Inspector will run away if she sees me,” Chandramohan threatened, adding that he would track down the officers’ home addresses by the next day.
The officers, who had recorded the confrontation on video, repeatedly asked the couple to move their vehicle, but the pair refused to cooperate. The video, which shows the couple hurling abuses and ignoring the police’s requests, soon spread across social media platforms. Social media users expressed shock at the couple’s behavior and called for strict action.
In response to the public outcry, senior police officials ordered a swift investigation. A special team was formed to locate the couple, who had fled the scene after the altercation. The investigation revealed that the police officer involved in the confrontation was Silambarasan, from the Mylapore police station. He had filed a formal complaint after the incident. The police quickly identified the couple as Chandramohan and Dhanalakshmi, who had checked into a lodge in the Thoraipakkam area. A special team apprehended them and brought them to the Mylapore police station for questioning.
During the investigation, as reported in Malai Murasu, it was discovered that Dhanalakshmi is an active member of the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) party, specifically involved in the Mylapore unit where she resides. Her political affiliation has drawn additional scrutiny, particularly since her connection to the DMK may have emboldened the couple’s actions during the confrontation. Dhanalakshmi’s role in the party has fueled discussions about political figures using their influence to intimidate law enforcement.

Chandramohan and Dhanalakshmi were charged under five sections of the law, including for public nuisance and obstruction of police duty. They were subsequently remanded in judicial custody for 15 days and sent to the Puzhal Central Prison. Despite the legal action, Chennai Police posted a video on their X handle of Chandramohan apologizing for his behaviour. Following public backlash, the video was removed from the platform.
