Su. Venkatesan, MP, Lok Sabha, had shared a tweet yesterday asserting that the demand for an airport in Madurai had been denied by the Central Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, on a few grounds. “Aviation Minister @JM_Scindia says the demand for airport in Madurai and fourth for TN is not justified since North Indian states have only one international airport. The GST paid by TN last year is higher than those collectively paid by 21 states and UTs,” the tweet said. He had also added, “We are right in demanding not just 4, but even 14 for our state.”

Replying to this tweet, Minister Jyotiraditya has said that he was shocked by the gross misrepresentation of facts by the MP. He gave valid points saying that many states in India have more than 1 international airport, and therefore the statement made by the MP itself is baseless. He also said that International flights are currently operational in Madurai, and said that he doesn’t understand why the MP insists on International status for the airport. Check out the full reply here:
Shocked & disappointed by the gross misrepresentation of facts here.
Firstly, some States in both North & South India (like UP & Kerala) have more than one international airport. Hence, the statement quoted by the MP is baseless.

Secondly, the decision to grant international status to an existing airport is dependent on several factors, including passenger demand & proximity to other international airports in the State. 2/5

The Govt. is open to proposals for new airports in any part of the country. In fact, we aim at multiplying the current number of airports in India.

Thirdly, in fact, international flights are currently operational at the Madurai airport, so the MP’s
insistence over according international status to the airport is incomprehensible.

Also, contrary to the allegation, I had offered @MoCA_GoI ’s support in increasing the number of international flights for Madurai by requesting Indian carriers to fly abroad from the city.
