A college student who sustained severe injuries in a road accident while following Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay’s convoy has died after 19 days of treatment.
As reported in Indian Express Tamil, the deceased, identified as Vignesh from Tiruchirappalli, had been undergoing intensive care at a private hospital in Thanjavur after suffering serious head injuries in the accident. He succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday evening.
The incident dates back to 4 March 2026, when Vijay travelled to Thanjavur to participate in a campaign event and a meeting with party administrators. He had arrived in Tiruchirappalli by private flight and proceeded to Thanjavur by road. During his journey, a large number of supporters reportedly followed his vehicle on two-wheelers.
According to reports, the accident occurred on the Tiruchi–Thanjavur National Highway near Pudukudi. Vignesh, who was riding a motorcycle with his friend Arun, was travelling along with Vijay’s convoy when their bike was allegedly hit from behind by another vehicle. The impact caused their bike to lose control and crash into a car in front. Both Vignesh and Arun sustained injuries in the collision.
Vignesh suffered severe head injuries and was immediately admitted to a private hospital in Thanjavur, where he remained in intensive care. Despite continuous treatment, including monitoring for internal bleeding and the need for surgical intervention, he did not recover and died after 19 days.
Earlier, Vignesh’s father, Pandian, had spoken to reporters about the circumstances leading up to the accident. He said he runs a milk business and has twin sons, Vignesh and Kumaresh. According to him, Vignesh had left home around 7 AM on the day of the incident, stating that he was going to college. The family had provided him with a battery-operated vehicle, but he had reportedly parked it elsewhere and travelled on another bike with his friend.
Pandian said he initially believed his son had gone to college and only received information about the accident around 11:30 AM. He added that doctors had informed him that Vignesh had suffered bleeding in the brain and injuries to his leg, and that surgery would be required once his condition stabilised. However, treatment was delayed as doctors indicated that the bleeding needed to be controlled first, which could take up to 48 hours.
He further stated that he was not fully aware of how the accident occurred and had learned details from his younger son, who said that the motorcycle had been hit from behind, causing it to topple and crash. It was also reported that Vignesh had left his college premises around 10 AM and gone to see Vijay, though it remains unclear whether he had obtained permission or left on his own.
