While Kollywood actor and Dravidianist sympathiser Karthi showered praise on Tamil Nadu’s School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh, claiming government schools were thriving under his stewardship, the reality on the ground tells a very different story – just yesterday it was how class 9 government school students in Tirunelveli were found drinking liquor, today it is about a wall at a government school collapsing in Tiruvallur.
A Class 7 student died after a wall collapsed at a government school in Tiruvallur district, triggering concerns over the safety of school infrastructure.
The incident occurred at the Government Higher Secondary School in Kondapuram during the lunch break, when students were sitting on a platform along the school premises and eating their meals. According to sources, a side wall of the school suddenly collapsed, killing a student identified as Mohit on the spot.
The incident has caused shock and grief among students, parents and residents of the area.
The death has also drawn attention to the condition of government school buildings in Tamil Nadu. Over the past several years, there have been multiple reports of collapses involving school buildings, roof slabs and compound walls in different districts. Concerns have repeatedly been raised about the structural safety of government schools, including instances where classes are reportedly conducted under trees due to lack of proper buildings.
