Periyar is known for founding the Self-Respect Movement and Dravidar Kazhagam. He is considered as the father of Dravidian movement and a harbinger of social justice who advocated atheism and rationalism targeted against Hindu religion. However, his critics call him a demagogue who advocated Nazi-style decimation of Brahmins.

He also advocated a formation of ‘Dravidistan’ along the lines of ‘Pakistan’. When Indian attained Independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, Periyar marked the day as ‘black day’.
