TVK Minister of Commercial Taxes, Registration and Stamp Duty Lokesh Tamilselvan has said that the SIPCOT industrial project proposed in Namakkal district during the previous DMK government will be cancelled soon, as reported in Dinamani.
Speaking at a TVK public meeting marking the government’s 100-day achievements in Paramathi-Velur, Tamilselvan alleged that the earlier SIPCOT project was proposed with the intention of increasing the value of land purchased by DMK functionaries in the area.
He claimed that the project would have adversely affected farmers in the region.
“A SIPCOT project was proposed in Namakkal district. During the previous DMK government, they said SIPCOT would be established in the area to increase the value of land purchased by members of their party. But it was a project that would affect farmers,” Tamilselvan said.
He added that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has now announced a new SIPCOT project at Lathuvadi in a different location.
“We are making arrangements to stop the SIPCOT that was announced in Namakkal. The district administration and the Industries Department are working together on this, and we will issue an announcement soon,” he said.
The Minister also spoke about the opening of the Mettur dam for irrigation. He said the dam was initially scheduled to be opened earlier, but farmers in the Delta region had sought seven days to prepare their fields.
According to Tamilselvan, he conveyed the farmers’ request to the Water Resources Minister, who suggested discussing the matter with the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary. The following evening, water was opened from the Mettur dam, he claimed.
Tamilselvan said the government was similarly implementing several schemes for the benefit of farmers.
