Sun News published a fake report claiming that Tamil had been removed from the nameboard of the Madurai Kallazhagar Temple, after using an allegedly manipulated photograph to make it appear that the Tamil lettering had been removed.
The controversy began on October 6, when Sun News published a news card claiming that Tamil had been removed from the temple’s entrance signboard. The news card stated: “Tamil removed — While the names of the temple had been written in Tamil, English and Hindi at the entrance of the Madurai Kallazhagar Temple, a new board carrying the temple’s name only in English and Hindi has now been installed after removing Tamil.”

The report was subsequently called out by HR&CE Minister Ramesh, who accused Sun News of deliberately manipulating a photograph to make it appear as though Tamil had been removed from the signboard.
In a strongly worded statement, Ramesh condemned the channel for the dissemination of fake news.
HR&CE Minister Accuses Sun News Of Photoshopping Image
Ramesh said the Sun News report claiming that Tamil had been removed from the nameboard of the Arulmigu Kallazhagar Temple in Madurai was “completely contrary to the truth” and a deliberately fabricated report.
He alleged that the photograph used in the Sun News report had been deliberately edited using Photoshop to conceal the Tamil lettering on the signboard, thereby creating the impression that Tamil had been removed.
According to Ramesh, the manipulated photograph was then presented as an authentic image and used as the basis for the report.
He categorically stated that Tamil had not been removed from the temple’s nameboard in any manner.
Ramesh further clarified that the nameboard at the Kallazhagar Temple remains the same as it had been in previous years and that there had been no removal of Tamil.
Calling the Sun News report a “blatant lie” and completely contrary to the facts, the minister said it was highly condemnable for a media organisation to deliberately alter facts and publish them as news.
He said such actions could create unnecessary confusion among the public and alleged that such reporting could be intended to bring disrepute to the government and the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
Ramesh also warned that appropriate action would be taken in accordance with law against media organisations that spread false and misleading information.
He appealed to the public not to believe fake news or media organisations that distort facts.
The minister also posted the alleged fake Sun News image alongside a photograph that he described as the actual, current image of the signboard.
Ramesh concluded his statement with a warning: “The law will certainly do its duty.”

Instead of admitting its mistake, Sun News pretended to report news as if they corrected the problem.
The sequence of events is striking: Sun News first published the claim that Tamil had been removed, the HR&CE Minister publicly accused the channel of spreading fake news and manipulating the photograph, and Sun News then reports as if the minister took action after Sun News reported a problem, but this wasn’t even the case.
