What Is Vaikasi Visakam?
Vaikasi Visakam is a Tamil Hindu festival observed during the full moon that coincides with the Visakam star in the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May–June). The day commemorates the birth of Lord Murugan, also known as Kartikeya or Subramanya, who is revered as the god of war and wisdom.
According to the Kanda Puranam the Tamil retelling of the Skanda Purana three powerful asuras (demonic beings), Surapadman, Singamukhan, and Tarakasuran, performed intense penance to appease Lord Shiva. In return, they were granted formidable boons that made them nearly invincible, leading to widespread tyranny across the cosmos.
To end their reign of terror, the devas (celestial beings) appealed to Shiva, who responded by creating six divine sparks—one from each of his six faces. These sparks were first carried by the wind god Vayu, then passed on to the fire god Agni due to their searing heat. Agni deposited them into the sacred Ganga river, which began to evaporate under the intense heat. The goddess Ganga then transported the sparks to Saravana Poigai, a celestial lake, where each spark transformed into a child.
These six divine children were nurtured by celestial maidens known as the Krittikas. Later, the goddess Parvati united them into one form giving rise to the six-headed deity, Murugan.
