Ramanathapuram: Jamaat Puts Up Notice Ordering Outside Traders To Leave Village By 6 PM

A notice put up by the Tiruppalaikudi United Muslim Sunnathwal Jamaat in Ramanathapuram district, asking traders and service providers from outside the village not to enter after 6 PM, has triggered controversy, as reported in Dinamalar.

The notice was placed in a public area near the Tiruppalaikudi Government Higher Secondary School along the East Coast Road. Titled “Attention Traders,” the notice states that outside traders, courier service personnel, water-tanker drivers and other traders should enter the village only between 6 AM and 6 PM and leave the village by 6 PM.

The notice has raised questions over whether a Jamaat has the authority to impose restrictions on the timings for outsiders entering a village.

R.S. Mangalam Tahsildar Varadhan said the Jamaat administration had been instructed to remove the notice board. He added that if the board was not removed, officials would take steps to remove it.

Abdul Quddus, president of the concerned Jamaat, however, said the notice was not an order barring outsiders from entering the village but only a request.

He said the notice was put up to prevent night-time thefts, accidents involving children playing on the streets and other criminal activities.
