Additional Director of Police (Law and Order) Tamarai Kannan, who confirmed the arrest, said that a case has been registered under Section 376 of the IPC against Constable Murugan who works at the Tilak Stadium Police Station.

According to evidence, the victim went to the cinema with five colleagues on Saturday night. When two of them were returning back home around 2 o clock in the morning on Sunday, Murugan and another police official detained them. Sources say that the constable hinted at the kind of relationship the two detained shared.

Having told the fellow police official that he will personally drop the woman at home, Constable Murugan allegedly took the woman to a lodge and raped her. He then drove her home in the same auto and returned to work with his co-police official.

The woman opened up about the incident to her colleague only on Monday morning. The case was taken up for investigation by Madurai Police commissioner Prem Anand Sinha following the victim’s complaint to the All Woman Police Station  office.
