Kamal Haasan’s Shifting Stance On Government Response To Rain Crisis; Netizens Call Out Hypocrisy

Actor, “politician”, founder of the Makkal Needhi Maiam, Kamal Haasan known for his quirks and confusing tweets seems to have ensured he gets on to the good side of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government as his party is sinking, falling apart, and becoming irrelevant by the day. With the DMK in power, Kamal Haasan’s tone seems to have undergone a notable shift.

As the city of Chennai reeled under the duress of Cyclone Michaung, Kamal Haasan posted on his X handle in a manner that seemed to blame the cyclone for the entire problem while turning a blind eye to the mismanagement, poor or absence of preparedness from the establishment. He wrote, “No matter how much precaution the government takes, the effects of natural disasters can only be controlled to a certain extent. At this juncture, it is necessary to ensure our safety and work hand in hand with the government machinery to help the situation stabilize. #CycloneMichuang Kindly request Maiamofficial people to help those affected by the heavy rains caused by the storm.”

Netizens while thoo-thooing his comments on the current situation, reminded him of his own words during the 2020 rains. In 2020, during the AIADMK government’s tenure in Tamil Nadu, Kamal Haasan took a strong stance on the state’s preparedness for rainwater management. Haasan criticised the administration, asserting that water bodies were ill-equipped to handle the influx of rainwater. He argued that crucial lessons from the devastating 2015 floods had gone unheeded, emphasizing the persistent issue of uncleared drains. He wrote, “An hour of rain. Tamil Nadu’s head is shaking. Northeast Monsoon threatens. The water bodies are not prepared to collect the mercy rain. There are no lessons learned from past floods. Drains are not covered. Water inundation at Children’s Hospital has not reduced. At least keep an eye on coastal districts.”

Even in the floods caused by Cyclone Michaung, the Met Department had warned of the incoming cyclonic storm for over a week. Despite all these warnings by both freelance weather bloggers and the Met Dept, the government failed the people by not being prepared for the torrential rains. No lessons learnt whatsoever from the past.

Netizens denounced his stance and questioned his blatant bootlicking of the DMK government.
