Actor-turned-virtue signaller Suriya who has been embroiled in several controversies surrounding the release of his latest film Jai Bhim, has found himself in trouble again with real-life Sengenni (Parvathi) exposing that Suriya and Jai Bhim film crew neither helped her nor sought her permission to turn her life story into celluloid.
Parvathi belonging to the Kuravar community is the wife of Rajakannu who died in police custodial torture in 1993.
In an interview to a YouTube channel, Parvathi laments that no one, including Suriya, who is also the producer of the film, had informed them that they were going to make a film focusing on her husband and herself.
She also said that while the actor has made crores of money through the movie, she hasn’t received any help from them till date. She added that her two sons are mentally challenged and has been struggling to make ends meet living with her daughter and son-in-law.
She also stated that she hails from the Kuravar community and not the Irular community as shown in the movie. “We belong to Kuravar community but they’ve shown us as Irular community. How is that right? How can we accept that?”, Parvathi asks.
Parvathi also categorically mentions that it was Anthony Sami who thrashed her husband to death. In the film, the name of Anthony Sami has been changed ‘Gurumoorthy’ which many allege is a reference to the late ‘Kaadu Vetti’ Guru, a prominent firebrand Vanniyar leader of the PMK.
In the background, Parvathi who is now more than 70 years old can be seen sitting in front of a thatched hut lamenting her plight to the videographer. Her daughter and son-in-law also explain to the video grapher about their plight.
It is to be noted that the movie Jai Bhim shows Chandru (actor Suriya) handing over a new house to Sengenni (Parvathi) after her legal victory. However, in reality, Parvathi is still struggling living in a hut with not even basic facilities.
On Sunday (November 14), Suriya issued a press release saying that he has deposited to late Rajakannu’s wife Parvathy.
Suriya and the crew of Jai Bhim found themselves facing heat after they were caught red-handed peddling false propaganda trying to create rift between different communities.
The main villain (character of SI Anthony Sami) is shown belonging to the Vanniyar community with their sacred motif ‘Agni’ being situated in the frame.
However, in reality, the sub-inspector’s name who implicated Rajakannu and thrashed him was Anthony Sami and is not a Vanniyar but a converted Christian.
After backlash, the makers of the film replaced it with a calendar having the image of Hindu Goddess Lakshmi. Netizens have pointed out that this is again a mischievous and deliberate twisting of facts in order peddle a narrative against the Hindu majority in Tamil Nadu.
Following this, PMK leader Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss wrote a letter asking pointed questions to actor Suriya on the deliberate twisting of facts portraying a community in negative light.
Suriya, who had given a response to this letter ended up beating around the bush failing to answer the questions posed by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss.
The actor now has been slapped with a defamation suit for 5 crores by Vanniyar Sangam.
Jai Bhim also received backlash for trying to instigate violence against Hindi speakers. In one scene, Prakash Raj who plays the role of a police officer slaps a north-Indian (who has been stereotyped as a ‘Marwari’ Saet) for speaking in Hindi and asks him to speak in Tamil.
