Four functionaries of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) have been arrested in connection with the alleged assault of a youth in Panappakkam near Nimili in Ranipet district, according to police sources.
The victim, identified as Hemnath, is currently undergoing treatment for serious injuries reportedly sustained in the attack.
According to police, the assault is believed to have stemmed from tensions between two groups that surfaced during a temple Kumbabhishekam held in the area a few weeks ago. Investigators suspect that the earlier dispute escalated and culminated in the attack on Hemnath.
The arrests have triggered concern among residents of Arundhati Palayam village in Panappakkam, with locals alleging that certain individuals associated with the political party have been creating disturbances in the area.
Speaking about the incident, the victim’s sister alleged that some TVK functionaries were operating under the influence of narcotic substances and claimed that crimes such as murder, robbery and sexual assault had become a growing concern in the locality. These allegations have not been independently verified.
She further alleged that her brother was forcibly taken away at night by a group of individuals and assaulted. According to her, three persons physically attacked the victim while another person recorded the incident on video. She stated that the attackers openly identified themselves as members of TVK and allegedly boasted that no action could be taken against them because of their political affiliation.
She appealed to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to intervene in the matter and ensure justice for the victim. She urged the government to take strict action against those responsible for the assault and expressed concern about the safety and security of residents in the village.
She also called upon the party leadership to remove such individuals from the organisation, arguing that those involved in criminal activities should not be allowed to continue representing the party. In addition, she demanded a crackdown on the alleged use and circulation of ganja in the area, stating that substance abuse was contributing to law and order problems.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and have already taken four accused into custody. Further inquiries are underway to determine the sequence of events that led to the assault and whether additional individuals were involved in the attack.
