The attempted midnight arrest of Gen-Z DMK organiser Anbanandam in Krishnagiri district has triggered a political controversy, with DMK supporters accusing the TVK government of political intimidation. However, the irony of the situation is that the DMK is now facing the same tactics it either justified or remained silent about when similar complaints were made against the previous DMK government.
According to Gen-Z DMK functionaries, police personnel arrived at Anbanandam’s residence in Podampatti near Rayakottai late at night in an attempt to arrest him. Party members alleged that police entered the premises, argued with his parents and conducted a search of the house despite objections from family members.
Following protests from local supporters and residents, the police reportedly left the premises without taking Anbanandam into custody.

The incident quickly became a rallying point for DMK supporters and the party’s social media ecosystem, which accused the TVK government of attempting to suppress dissent and silence critical voices.
In a statement circulated online, DMK alleged that the TVK government had acted in a “fascist” manner by attempting to arrest one of its coordinators for expressing political views critical of Chief Minister Joseph Vijay.

Was Anbanandam Being Targeted?
The controversy, however, did not emerge in a vacuum.
Anbanandam Ariyappan has built a substantial following through a series of videos targeting Chief Minister Vijay and the TVK government. While his supporters describe the content as political satire, several of the videos crossed the line from political criticism into personal attacks targeting Vijay’s family and private life.
One of the most controversial videos came in response to Vijay’s now-famous “Where is your father?” jibe directed at Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin during a political exchange.
Seeking to turn the attack back on Vijay, Ariyappan released a video in which he imaginatively portrayed Vijay’s son Jason Sanjay asking where his own father was. The video referenced the widely reported separation between Vijay and his wife Sangeetha and further built upon an earlier political taunt by Udhayanidhi Stalin, who had mocked Vijay by suggesting that his wife was waiting at the Chengalpattu court.

The video quickly went viral and attracted both support and criticism for dragging family matters into political discourse.
Ariyappan did not stop there.
Following actress Trisha’s social media post showing a birthday celebration involving Vijay, another video surfaced in which Ariyappan sarcastically claimed that he had finally located Jason Sanjay’s father. Referring to the photograph, he remarked that Vijay had been found celebrating in an actress’s house while simultaneously projecting himself as a symbol of morality and virtue.

The remarks were widely interpreted as an attempt to insinuate an inappropriate relationship between Vijay and the actress, something that neither Ariyappan nor others provided evidence for.
Over time, Ariyappan produced multiple videos centred not on government policies or administrative decisions but on Vijay’s personal life, family relationships and alleged moral contradictions.

Ariyappan has also repeatedly referred to the Chief minister as a Puppet CM in almost all his videos.

DMK’s Hypocrisy
The party’s outrage appears selective. For years, opposition parties, activists and social media commentators were targeted by the previous DMK government by using police complaints, criminal cases and legal mechanisms against political opponents, YouTubers, journalists and social media users critical of the ruling establishment.
Many of those complaints were dismissed by DMK supporters as routine legal processes or legitimate law-enforcement actions.
Now, the same ecosystem that previously defended or ignored police action against government critics is portraying a similar police visit as an unprecedented assault on free speech.
The episode highlights a recurring pattern in Tamil Nadu politics, where parties often defend strong state action when in power but condemn identical actions when they find themselves in opposition.
