PMK president Dr Anbumani Ramadoss has strongly opposed the reported move by Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) to demolish the Angalamman-Pavadairayan Temple in South Melur village near Neyveli for the expansion of its lignite mining operations. He urged both NLC and the Tamil Nadu government to abandon the proposal and protect the temple, which he described as a place of worship and faith for lakhs of devotees.
In a statement, Anbumani said the Angalamman-Pavadairayan Temple located in South Melur serves as the clan deity temple for people from more than 30 villages in the region. He noted that thousands of families not only from Cuddalore district but also from neighbouring Ariyalur, Perambalur, Villupuram and Kallakurichi districts regard the temple as their ancestral place of worship.
According to Anbumani, NLC has already acquired lands surrounding the temple and is now attempting to remove the shrine as part of the expansion of Mine-1A. He alleged that despite sustained protests by local residents opposing the move, the company continues to pursue plans to demolish the temple and has reportedly sought the support of the Tamil Nadu government for the project.
The PMK leader condemned what he described as NLC’s eagerness to demolish a temple that holds immense religious significance for lakhs of people. He argued that the continued existence of the temple at its present location would not adversely affect NLC’s mining operations, whereas its demolition would deeply hurt the religious sentiments and faith of devotees spread across multiple districts.
Anbumani urged NLC to immediately withdraw any proposal to demolish the Angalamman-Pavadairayan Temple and called upon the Tamil Nadu government to intervene in the matter. He said the state government should exert adequate pressure on the public sector company and ensure that efforts to demolish the temple are halted.
