The DMK’s IT wing has once again brought the Tamil-Sanskrit language debate into focus, this time targeting the TVK government over the Kumbhabhishekam of the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple.
In a post on social media, the DMK IT wing contrasted the ceremony with the Kumbhabhishekam held at the Palani Murugan Temple under the previous DMK government.
“Under the Dravidian Model government, the Kumbhabhishekam ceremony at the Palani Murugan Temple was conducted in Tamil.
But this cowardly TVK government has conducted the Kumbhabhishekam at the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple in Sanskrit,” they wrote.

It is noteworthy that Odhuvars did sing Tamil hymns at the kumbhabhishekam.

The Palani Murugan Temple and Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple are traditional temples where rituals are performed according to established Agamic practices. The mantras and ritual procedures prescribed for such ceremonies are not matters for governments or political parties to alter according to their ideological preferences.
Yet the DMK is now boasting that, under its government, the Palani Murugan Temple Kumbhabhishekam was conducted with the mantras in Tamil.
The same party has now attacked the TVK government because Sanskrit mantras were used during the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple Kumbhabhishekam, claiming that the “Dravidian Model” tradition was broken.
In other words, the DMK is not merely raising a language question. It is proudly pointing to its own intervention in the ritual language of an Agama-based temple and demanding that the same approach be followed elsewhere.
For devotees who believe temple rituals must be conducted according to the respective Agamas and established traditions, such political interference is itself the problem. A government’s role is to administer temples according to law — not to rewrite their ritual traditions to satisfy an ideological language agenda.
Having changed the language of mantras at Palani, the DMK is now celebrating that intervention and attacking the TVK government for allowing Sanskrit mantras at Madurai.
Temple traditions are not political property. Governments and parties have no business turning Agamic rituals into an ideological Tamil-versus-Sanskrit contest.
