Barely months into propping up Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s government, Congress finds the same party it supported, openly campaigning for a different Prime Ministerial face than the one it has spent a decade building – Rahul Gandhi.
Public Works Minister and TVK general secretary Aadhav Arjuna used a Tamil Nadu Assembly debate on Wednesday to argue that the country’s top job should stop rotating among “North Indian” states and come to Tamil Nadu instead – a pitch that, coming from Vijay’s own cabinet colleague, reads less like a states’-rights argument and more like the opening bid for Vijay’s national ambitions.
“The Prime Minister should come from South India, especially from Tamil Nadu,” Arjuna told the House on 12 August 2026, participating in the debate on the anti-delimitation resolution moved by Vijay himself.
Invoking the American Civil War, he claimed India was living through its own version of Abraham Lincoln’s north-south conflict. “When Abraham Lincoln was the president, he faced a war, and it was the North-South War. Like that, today, be it India and we; we are faced with the north-south war. The Constitution authored by revolutionary Dr BR Ambedkar emphasises equality, and there is Article 14; everyone is equal,” he said, adding that “a situation continues to this day under which a Prime Minister can be elected if five or six northern states come together. Such a scenario should be changed. In future, a PM should be chosen from southern states, from Tamil Nadu,” and that power “is not meant only for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat.”
Pitching For Joseph Vijay As The Candidate?
Arjuna did not explicitly name Vijay as his preferred candidate for Prime Minister. But the political context makes the remarks difficult to overlook.
The resolution he was defending was moved by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Arjuna repeatedly praised Vijay and said that the Chief Minister was following the political path laid down by Anna.
“This is Tamil Nadu’s history and our chief minister is following that path…this resolution is to protect the Constitution.”
The distinction is important. Arjuna is not merely arguing that Tamil Nadu deserves greater representation in Delhi. He is arguing that the country should produce a Prime Minister from Tamil Nadu.
If TVK were eventually to push Vijay as a national leader, it would put the party in the unusual position of being allied with Congress at the state level while potentially building an alternative to Rahul Gandhi for the top job at the national level.
The Congress Problem
Arjuna isn’t a backbencher venting; he is Joseph Vijay’s right-hand man, TVK’s point man for exactly this kind of image project, and he is doing it from inside a government Congress helped install. In May 2026, Congress broke a decades-old alliance with the DMK specifically to back Vijay, with Rahul Gandhi jointly pledging alongside Vijay to honour “the historic verdict of the people of Tamil Nadu.” Congress has since talked up the tie-up as a long-term partnership stretching to Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha polls.
That is the same Rahul Gandhi whom Congress has spent years positioning as its national challenger to Narendra Modi. Arjuna’s speech makes no mention of Gandhi. It doesn’t need to. A minister from the party that just handed TVK a state government is telling a legislature the next PM should come from Tamil Nadu, at the exact moment his own boss is the only Tamil Nadu politician with a national profile to speak of.
Built On Social Media First
This wasn’t spontaneous. We had earlier documented how Voice of Commons, the political strategy firm Arjuna himself founded and still appears to run while serving as a sitting minister, has been flooding Instagram with vox-pop reels from cities as far away as Varanasi and Mumbai, where passers-by are prompted to declare Vijay their preferred choice for Prime Minister over Modi – scoreboard graphics and all. The claim has been in circulation since at least May, months before Arjuna took it to the Assembly floor. The pattern is consistent: a minister who owns a political consultancy manufactures a national “Vijay for PM” wave online, then repeats the demand in the Assembly as if it were an organic constitutional grievance.
A Coalition Speaking In Two Voices
Congress now finds itself bankrolling a government whose senior-most minister is actively working on Instagram and now on the record in the Assembly, to install someone other than Rahul Gandhi as India’s next Prime Minister. Whether Congress’s high command notices, or decides Tamil Nadu isn’t worth the argument, is the question the alliance will eventually have to answer.
