The Joseph Vijay TVK government has denied permission for a national flag rally planned by the BJP in Coimbatore ahead of Independence Day, prompting the BJP to approach the Madras High Court seeking permission to conduct the event.
As reported in Dinamani, BJP Coimbatore city district president J. Rameshkumar said the party had initially sought police permission to hold the rally from Gandhipuram bus stand through Cross Cut Road. The police rejected the request, citing traffic congestion.
The BJP subsequently proposed two alternative routes — from Sivananda Colony to Power House and from Theppakulam grounds to Kamarajapuram. Rameshkumar claimed that officials initially indicated that one of the routes could be permitted, but later issued a notice denying permission for both routes.
The BJP has challenged the decision through an urgent petition before the Madras High Court, alleging that the police had acted in a “one-sided” manner.
Rameshkumar also alleged that protests by organisations supporting the ruling alliance had recently been allowed in Gandhipuram, while permission was denied for the BJP’s national flag rally.
He said the BJP would organise the rally with the participation of state and national leaders if the High Court grants permission.
