Bangladesh Court Rejects ISKCON Priest Chinmoy Krishna Das’ Bail

Bangladesh Court Rejects ISKCON Priest Chinmoy Krishna Das' Bail

A Bangladesh court on Thursday rejected the bail plea of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a Hindu monk and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote, also associated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), during a hearing held under tight security, local media reported.

Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Saiful Islam rejected the bail plea after hearing arguments from both sides for around 30 minutes, said Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Advocate Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan to The Daily Star.

As many as 11 Supreme Court lawyers, led by Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, represented the ISKCON priest in the high-profile sedition case. Following the hearing, Chinmoy’s lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, said that they plan to appeal to the High Court for bail.

Arrested on November 25 from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on sedition charges, Das has remained in jail amid growing calls for justice. The charges, filed against Das and 18 others, were linked to the hoisting of a saffron flag above the country’s official flag during a protest rally on October 25 in Chattogram’s Laldighi Maidan.

The bail petition, supported by 20 advocates from Dhaka and Chittagong, highlights allegations of a false and fabricated case. Advocates argue that Das, suffering from health issues such as diabetes and respiratory problems, is being unjustly detained.

His primary lawyer, Ravindra Ghosh, was previously barred from filing an anticipatory bail petition. Earlier on December 11, a Bangladesh court rejected Das’ initial bail plea, citing procedural lapses. Reports indicate that the absence of a valid power of attorney and lawyer representation led to the rejection.

The case took another turn when Subhashish Sharma, one of Das’ lawyers, missed a December 3 hearing due to security concerns. Prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan stated that the absence of proper documentation and legal representation hindered earlier proceedings. Meanwhile, India has called for a fair and transparent trial, emphasising the need to respect the legal rights of all involved.

Advocates and supporters are hopeful that the court will consider the monk’s deteriorating health and the procedural irregularities that have plagued the case so far.

“Constant KYC Updating For No Reason Is A Serious Harassment”, Says Congress MP Karti Chidambaram

Constant KYC Updating For No Reason Is A Serious Harassment, Says Congress MP Karti Chidambaram

Congress Member of Parliament Karti Chidambaram has called for an end to thetyranny of KYCfollowing a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh, which brought attention to the severe consequences of the Know Your Customer (KYC) verification process. Chidambaram’s comments came after a 59-year-old man, Ramman, collapsed and died outside an Indian Bank branch in Sonbhadra after standing in line for four days in an attempt to complete his KYC verification.

A 59-year-old man, Ramman, tragically collapsed and died outside an Indian Bank branch in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, after standing in line for four days to complete his KYC verification. Despite several visits and delays due to technical issues, he was unable to finish the process. The bank had insisted that no transactions could occur without KYC completion. When he collapsed, a bank employee reportedly told his family to take him away rather than offering assistance. This incident has sparked outrage, with many criticizing the burdensome nature of the KYC process.

In a post on his official X handle on 31 December 2024, Chidambaram expressed his concerns, saying, This tyranny of KYC must end

@RBI. I flagged this harassment faced by all during my intervention in the Banking Amendment Bill debate. When nothing has changed why should customers constantlyupdatetheir KYC.? This KYC updation is a vicious business where certain firms profiteer from the outsourced contracts.”

Chidambaram raised the issue of KYC in Parliament earlier in December. He said, Sir, the tyranny of KYC is happening. I am sure sir you also have a bank account which is linked to some phone number. I am sure they are calling you all the time and asking you to update KYC. I think we should stop this tyranny of KYC when there is nothing changed, your name hasn’t changed, your parents’ names have not changed, your address is not changed, nothing has changed but the bank is calling you millions of times in a year asking you to update your KYC and it is a serious harassment because they are outsourcing the KYC process to some third party agency and that agency has to make these calls to harass you. The government must bring, in order to make life easier for the customer, they must simplify and mandate that if there is no change, there is no reason to update your KYC multiple times in a year.”

Earlier in December 2024, Karti Chidambaram raised concerns in Parliament about the lack of transparency and proper updating in the CIBIL score system. He criticized how CIBIL, a private company, tracks individuals’ credit history without providing a clear way to appeal or address inaccuracies. Karti pointed out that despite timely loan repayments, individuals often face difficulties due to inaccurate CIBIL scores, which are not updated properly in cases such as government subsidies or loan settlements. He called for greater transparency and reforms to make the system more accountable, highlighting that the government missed an opportunity to address these issues while focusing on minor adjustments.

“Where Did The ₹44,042 Crore Allocated To Education Department Go?” BJP TN Chief Annamalai Questions DMK Min Anbil Mahesh After TN Private Schools Assn Announces Plan To Upgrade 500 Govt Schools

"Where Does The ₹44,042 Crore Allocated To Education Department Go?" TN BJP Chief Annamalai Questions DMK Minister Anbil Mahesh After TN Private Schools Association Announces Plan To Upgrade 500 Govt Schools

Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has asked the state’s school education minister, Anbil Mahesh, a series of questions, including, “Where is the allocated budget being spent?” This criticism comes in light of a recent resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association on 31 December 2024. The resolution announced the association’s plan to adopt 500 government schools during the 2025-2026 academic year as part of an inaugural initiative.

On 1st January 2024, Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai, through his official X account, questioned the allocation of funds for education in the state. He remarked, “One of the resolutions passed at the inaugural function of the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association, held yesterday, announced that nearby private schools will upgrade 500 government schools, which has been welcomed by the Minister of School Education, Anbil Mahesh. The question now arises among the public: Does the Tamil Nadu government not even have the funds to upgrade 500 government schools?”

He further highlighted, “The Tamil Nadu government’s budget allocation for education this year alone is ₹44,042 crore. On top of that, they also take out loans of about one lakh crore rupees every year. The DMK, which came to power promising to rebuild 10,000 dilapidated government school buildings in their election manifesto, has failed to take any action even after four years.”

Annamalai also pointed out issues within the system, stating, “Recently, the school education department went as far as disconnecting the internet services for district education offices due to an unpaid internet fee of ₹1.5 crore. So, where does the ₹44,042 crore allocated to the education department go? Has the DMK government been forced to seek help from private organizations even to educate students, who are the pillars of the country’s future? What is the DMK government doing with this money if they can’t provide basic facilities?”

Background

On 30 December 2024, during the inaugural event of the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association—formed by the merger of six private school associations—nine resolutions were passed urging the government to address critical issues private schools face. Among the key demands was the timely release of funds for the Right to Education (RTE) Act, which the association highlighted as a significant concern.

The resolutions called for the permanent recognition of matriculation, nursery, and primary schools that meet specific criteria. Another resolution proposed a policy change to relax regulations for private school buildings constructed before 31 May 2023. It urged the government to allow primary and nursery schools with sufficient classrooms to be upgraded to middle schools.

The association also demanded that the government release the pending RTE funds within the same academic year to cover students’ tuition fees. They further suggested that only students with at least 75% attendance should be eligible to sit for board exams.

In addition, the association called for establishing an expert committee chaired by a retired judge to address the legal challenges private schools face. As part of a special resolution, they announced plans to adopt 500 government schools during the 2025-2026 academic year.

During the event, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi stated that a decision on the resolutions would be made after discussions with the Chief Minister. The minister and School Education Secretary, S Madhumathi, explained that the delay in RTE fund disbursement was due to the central government’s hold-up in releasing funds under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme.

“Carnatic Music Should Include Ambedkar, Periyar Alongside Thyagaraja And Dikshitar”, Says Woke Virtue-Signalling Leftist Musician TM Krishna Who Sang Dravidianist Author Perumal Murugan’s Poem At Music Academy

Carnatic Music Should Include Ambedkar, Periyar Alongside Thyagaraja And Dikshitar, Says Woke Virtue-Signalling Leftist Musician TM Krishna Who Sang Dravidianist Author Perumal Murugan's Poem At Music Academy

In his acceptance speech after receiving the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanithi Award for 2024 by The Music Academy, Madras, Carnatic vocalist TM Krishna stated that figures like Ambedkar and Periyar should be incorporated alongside traditional Carnatic masters like Thyagaraja and Dikshitar.

The award ceremony was held at the Academy’s venue on TTK Road, Chennai, as part of its 98th annual festival celebrations. Professor David Shulman from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who was the guest of honour, presented the award to Krishna, in recognition of his ‘contributions’ to Carnatic music.

In his acceptance speech, Krishna expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who have supported him throughout his journey, even during challenging times. Standing by me, despite knowing the path I tread, is not easy. I owe my gratitude and love to all who have stood by me, he remarked.

Later, during an interaction with Sun News, Krishna spoke elaborately and said there was a need for inclusivity and dialogue in Carnatic music. Beginning with the award presenter, he said, David Shulman, who presented this award, is an extraordinary individual. He has contributed immensely to understanding Carnatic music, South Indian arts, spirituality, religions, and languages. He speaks and writes in about ten languages and has done numerous translations. He’s not only a thinker but also a social activist, championing causes like Palestinian rights. Receiving this award from him is deeply meaningful to me.”

Speaking on thechallengeshe faces, he said, There’s nothing particularly special about it. I’ve made decisions to prioritize equality—be it spiritual, religious, or societal. I believe all humans, spaces, thoughts, arts, and artists are equal. But, achieving this realization emotionally is challenging. I was born into an upper-caste, upper-class environment, but I’ve constantly questioned it. Questioning your environment is crucial. Challenges will arise, but they lead to meaningful insights. The challenges don’t stop with you; they extend to those around you—family, friends, students. It’s not easy for them to understand my thoughts immediately. But I refuse to live a lie and accept the societal pressures that discourage questioning. They give more trouble to those around me, that’s the pressure tactic. In English, we call it collateral damage. They plant a bomb in a place to plant a bomb, to kill someone, but 100 people die. Why do they kill 100 people? They say that’s collateral damage. This is what they are doing to target them. I have no answer for that. So, they are suffering a lot. I feel that suffering, that’s why I feel it’s difficult for them. Beyond that, if they are with me, that is a great strength of theirs. They don’t need to come out and say,I am with you. They don’t need to hold a flag and come to a big protest. But they are with me. I know they are. They can sing and come and talk. That is what friendship is. That is a real strength. You need great courage to take it. I am grateful for that for life.”

Answering a question on thethemes of equality, Ambedkar, Periyar’s thoughts, and interfaith harmony“, Krishna said, Whether it’s Ambedkar, Periyar, Narayana Guru, or Buddha, they all arose from their contexts and political philosophies. My role is to share these ideas through music. Carnatic music is my vehicle. It’s up to the audience to internalize and reflect on these ideas, I am not ready to force them. But if you say this should not come in music, that should not come in music. I will definitely oppose it until the end. I will never accept it. Politics is embedded in every aspect of life—from where you are born, the doctor you see, the school you attend, to the food you eat. Even poetry and whether you can go to the beach are political. Music, too, must reflect diverse perspectives and emotions. Carnatic music should include Ambedkar and societal questions alongside Thyagaraja and Dikshitar. Thiagaraja must also be there, that is the beauty of it. Everyone is there – Thiagarajar, Dikshitar, Narayana Guru, Ambedkar, Periyar – that is community. Community means being together, but it doesn’t mean everyone must agree with everything. Music is a tool for asking questions. Thyagarajar has also asked questions. Why have we forgotten that? He is asking questions through his kirtanas, with the exposure he had during his time. He is also questioning. What am I asking? They have given us a new idea. What are we doing about our world?

Speaking about thestanding ovationhe received for his 25 December 2024 free concert, he said, It has been ten years since I performed at the academy. Conversation happens in different ways. I quit Music Academy, that was a conversation. During these 10 years, I have seen many small changes. Not big changes, but small changes can be seen. Secondly, when an institution also participates in that conversation, I think it is very important that we also participate in that conversation. So now a conversation has begun, what happened in the last eight months is a conversation, now I said that this award is being given to me and when I agreed to accept that award, a lot of conversation has happened since then, it means there is some spark in the society, that is what we need.”

He further said, “I have a lot of conversations with the audience I have been in touch for 10 years. I have organized many Nadaswaram concerts. I have organized many events through our foundation. So if I want to say it in English, I am an insider outsider. It is very easy to become an outsider. It can happen in a second. It does not require any courage. It is more difficult to be inside and do what you want to.”

Speaking about the song he chose to sing and his attire, he said, “The song goes like this “We want freedom, we want freedom, we want freedom to speak, sing, listen to, read, etc. That song was written by the writer Perumal Murugan. It has become something that needs to be said today. It shouldn’t be like that. After 78 years, this shouldn’t be asked. It’s not a matter of asking. But we have to ask because even today there is a problem. There is a mistake, this fear. In English, there is something called self-censorship, so we censor ourselves when the threats become too much. It is because there is a fear in your mind that if you speak about it and worry about what others will say. That is not freedom. When will there be freedom? There should be no fear. Freedom is freedom When our minds and hearts are free without that fear. We don’t have it today. Violence has increased, especially in social media. If there is freedom, I must also have that freedom to wear what I want. No one knew what I was wearing. It was a sarong. This is worn in Sri Lanka and Indonesia. It was made in Yazhpanam by Tamils. Should we not support the Tamils suffering there? Is it not a respectable attire? Just because the oppressed class or labourers wear the lungi, has it become ugly because of that, call lungi, what are you saying about them? If a Muslim wears it, what do we say about it? Why is everyone wearing a salwar kameez, don’t wear it. I don’t care what they say about me.”

Praising the Margazhi Makkal Isai being taken forward by Dravidianist director Pa Ranjith, Krishna said, “These two worlds should meet. Now it is happening as two separate worlds. If the community wants to unite, those two worlds should meet, but they should meet with equal strength. So these two are now happening during Margazhi. On one side, there are changes, and I am making them. I will do whatever I can. Ranjith said that it is makkal isai. These two environments are a basket of art. Let’s say these are two baskets. When they come together, it will become a real Chennai Margazhi festival.”

Parents File Petition After Newborn’s Hand Amputated Due To Alleged Negligence At Tiruppur Government Hospital

Parents File Petition After Newborn's Hand Amputated Due To Alleged Negligence At Tiruppur Government Hospital

In a shocking incident, the parents of a newborn in Tiruppur have accused government doctors of negligence after the baby’s hand was allegedly amputated. The parents, Deepa and her family from Avinashi, have filed a petition with the Collectorate demanding appropriate action against the doctors involved.

On 13 November, Deepa gave birth to a baby boy at the Tiruppur Government Medical College Hospital. Shortly after birth, a blood clot appeared on the baby’s hand, prompting doctors to recommend transferring the baby to a hospital in Coimbatore for further treatment. However, after reaching the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital, doctors determined that the baby’s hand needed to be amputated due to the delay in treatment.

As a result, the family has filed a petition demanding accountability for the alleged medical negligence, calling for action to be taken against the responsible doctors.

Speaking about their ordeal, one of the relatives shared their distress with the press, saying, “When the baby was born, they didn’t hand him over to us. They kept him for a day, and the next day, they sent us to the Coimbatore Government Hospital. At Coimbatore GH, they also kept him for a day, but didn’t say anything since the doctors were on strike. Immediately they said that the baby’s hand had to be amputated. When they suggested amputation, we decided to take the baby to Kovai Medical Hospital. But when we arrived there, they told us, ‘We can’t do anything; the hand has decayed. If you had brought him within six hours, we could have saved the babies hand.’ They should have informed us earlier, right? At least, they should have shown us the baby immediately after birth. If they couldn’t handle, we could have taken him elsewhere. Now, the baby’s hand is gone. What will happen to his future? The parents are also struggling badly. How can they cope with his future now?”

In this regard, the parents have submitted a petition to the Collector, requesting that action be taken against the doctors at both the Tiruppur and Coimbatore hospitals. They have also sought relief for the victims as compensation for the negligence displayed by the hospitals.

Kejriwal In Love With Fake Voters: Delhi BJP Poster Mocks AAP

Kejriwal In Love With Fake Voters: Delhi BJP Poster Mocks AAP

The Delhi BJP claimed on Thursday that the AAP’s National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal wants to “retain power” in the Assembly polls in the national Capital by adding bogus voters.

A poster released by the Delhi BJP likened him to a character in the movie ‘SCAM 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’, based on the stock market irregularities. The movie’s original poster says “Risk hai toh Ishq hai” while the Delhi BJP, mocking Kejriwal, has captioned it “Farzi voters se Ishq hai (Kejriwal is in love with fake voters).”

The original poster has the movie’s name ‘SCAM 1992 (The Harshad Mehta Story)’, which the Delhi BJP, slamming Kejriwal has changed to ‘Mahathag Original, Voter List scam 2024’.

In a post on social media platform X, the Delhi BJP accused Kejriwal of rigging votes to remain in power.

“This fraudster has created thousands of votes (of a special community with ages ranging from 40-80) on the address of a house owner, who is unaware of the development,” the party said in the post.

Recently, the Delhi BJP unveiled a video showcasing Kejriwal’s alleged opportunistic ideology and likened him to a character in the film ‘Naya Din Nai Raat’, in which actor Sanjeev Kumar portrays multiple roles to suit various situations.

The party accused Kejriwal of carrying out a large-scale voter fraud ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Delhi BJP chief Sachdeva alleged that Kejriwal was manipulating the voters’ list by creating fake minority community votes.

Sachdeva shared testimonies from Hindu homeowners who revealed that several minority community names had been added to their addresses in the voters’ list without their knowledge.

Sharing figures, Sachdeva said applications have been submitted to enlist 1,83 lakh new voters. In Narela 4,503, Burari 7,027, Badli 4,575, Rithala 4,197, Mundka 4,501, Kirari 6,255, Nangloi Jat 6,523, Badarpur 6,647, Okhla 4,601, Gokalpur 5,171, Mustafabad 5,502 and in Karawal Nagar, 7,087 applications have been received, the BJP claimed.

US Under Siege: Back To Back Attack In 24 Hours; Tesla Cybertruck Explodes Outside Trump Hotel, Man Drives Truck Into Crowd, Mass Shooting At New York Nightclub Leaves 11 Hurt

US Under Siege: Back To Back Attack In 24 Hours; Tesla Cybertruck Explodes Outside Trump Hotel, Man Drives Truck Into Crowd, Mass Shooting At New York Nightclub Leaves 11 Hurt

A mass shooting at Amazura nightclub in Queens, New York, on Thursday, has left at least 11 people injured, according to The Spectator Index.

This incident is part of a disturbing series of attacks in the US within the last 24 hours. Details are still awaited as the investigation continues to unfold in the third attack on the US over 24 hours.

Earlier, a man intentionally drove a pickup truck into a crowd of revellers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter on New Year’s Day, and a Tesla Cybertruck exploded on Wednesday, January 1, outside the Trump Las Vegas hotel in which one person was killed.

A shocking link has been established between the Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside Trump Las Vegas hotel and the New Orleans car attack. Authorities are now investigating the Tesla Cybertruck explosion as a possible act of terror.

The New Orleans’ attack, which killed at least 15 people and injured dozens more, is also being investigated as an act of terrorism. The suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, a US citizen from Texas, reportedly flew a black ISIS flag from the rear bumper of the truck.

This horrific incident has resulted in the hospitalisation of at least 35 people, with authorities calling it a deliberate act of carnage. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell condemned the attack, while President Joe Biden expressed his condolences for the victims and their families, offering federal support.

“My heart goes out to the victims and their families who were simply trying to celebrate the holiday,” Biden said. “There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation’s communities.”

The investigation into the attack is now led by the FBI, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Justice Department’s National Security Division, and local authorities. President-elect Donald Trump also addressed the tragedy, offering his sympathies to the victims and first responders.

“Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department,” Trump said in a post on TruthSocial. T

These two incidents add to rising concern over violent attacks or doubted terrorist attacks in the US as authorities continue to investigate the motives behind these tragedies.

21st Century Dravidian Model Tamil Nadu: Where SC Children Need Police Protection To Celebrate New Year

21st Century Dravidian Model Tamil Nadu: Where SC Children Need Police Protection To Celebrate New Year

Even in the 21st century, Scheduled Castes (SC) in Tamil Nadu require heavy police protection to celebrate New Year events peacefully. A stark example of this occurred on 1 January 2025, when SC residents of Kurinjakulam organized children’s games on government poramboke land, a celebration that was barricaded and closely monitored by police.

Following opposition from dominant caste groups in the area, approximately 380 officers were deployed to prevent any disruptions. The event was held under the supervision of Sankarankovil Revenue Divisional Officer J. Kavitha, and the games took place between 8 AM and 4 PM.

The children participated in activities such as kabaddi, musical chairs, tug-of-war, blowing balloons, and dance and speech competitions—all under the watchful eye of the police. To ensure security, two checkposts were set up, surveillance cameras were installed, and a mobile toilet was provided. Sources noted that SC residents of Kurinjakulam have previously been subjected to caste-based violence by dominant caste groups.

Historically, tensions have been high in this village. In 1992, four SC individuals were murdered, and there have been numerous incidents where SC residents were physically assaulted for wearing shirts or footwear in areas dominated by the upper castes.

Until 2019, SC residents were able to celebrate New Year’s by organizing games on the same government land. However, dominant caste groups petitioned the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to stop the event. While the court ultimately did not ban the games, it led to the imposition of various restrictions, including time limits for the celebration. Many Kurinjakulam natives working in other cities also returned home to participate in the New Year festivities.

Sankarankovil Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) J Kavitha has issued 18 guidelines to the Scheduled Caste (SC) residents of Kurinjakulam for organising New Year games for children Following a peace committee meeting held on December 27, the RDO extended the timing for the event by two hours, allowing it from 8 am to 4 pm.

To facilitate the event, the local administration has established a series of strict guidelines. These rules prohibit the entry of outsiders, including individuals associated with caste organizations or political parties, into Kurinjakulam. Only children under 18 who are residents of the village are allowed to participate, and those returning for the New Year celebrations must provide their names to the police in advance. The event organizers are also required to submit the names of all participants to the police before the games begin. The use of caste-related flags, banners, slogans, or songs is explicitly banned. Additionally, fireworks or crackers are not allowed before, during, or after the games. Temporary structures, such as pandals, are prohibited, and the activities are restricted to the designated government land. Sound systems can only be used with prior police authorization, and organizers must ensure that no intoxicated individuals are allowed into the venue.

The Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) has issued a stern warning that any violations of these guidelines will lead to the immediate cancellation of the event and legal action against the organizers.

“Keep In Mind We Are The Ruling Class (Aanda Parambarai)”, Says DMK Minister P Moorthy

Keep In Mind We Are The Ruling Class (Aanda Parambarai), Says DMK Minister P Moorthy

In a public speech rife with casteism, DMK Minister for Commercial Taxes, Registration, and Stamp Act, P Moorthy, referred to his community as the “ruling class” (aanda parambarai), and alleged that historical sacrifices by this specific caste during British colonial rule were deliberately erased from history.

During his address at Thamukkam Maidan in Madurai District, Minister Moorthy emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by communities during India’s struggle for freedom. We must recognize that our history holds accounts of immense sacrifices, he stated.

I am saying we must keep in mind that we are the ruling class (aanda parambarai). History has been hidden – you have read about it. While the deaths of a few today may gain significant attention, history reveals that thousands laid down their lives for freedom. You must show it to the country too. Today there is a history – be it Alagar Koil or Thirumogoor koil, when the British invaded us and looted us, this community sacrificed 5000 of their own. This history has been hidden. The minister cited instances of collective sacrifice, claiming that one community lost 5,000 members during the British invasion, and 16 individuals were shot dead near Usilampatti.

He lamented that such stories of heroism remain largely unknown due to a lack of educational advancement in the past. Even though we excelled in agriculture and industry, our history was hidden. Thankfully, this is changing now, he remarked, adding that he appreciated the community’s progress in securing government employment.

The speech drew criticism for its focus on caste, with detractors arguing that it could perpetuate divisions. Opponents accused the minister of framing historical narratives through a narrow lens rather than emphasizing unity and collective contributions.

Political commentators and opposition leaders have called for the minister to clarify his remarks, asserting that speeches by public representatives should promote inclusivity and national cohesion.

PMK Women’s Wing Leads ‘Am I Next?’ Protest In Chennai Over Anna University Sexual Assault Case

PMK Women's Wing Leads 'Am I Next?' Protest In Chennai Over Anna University Sexual Assault Case

Political and public outrage reached a boiling point in Tamil Nadu as the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and All Indian Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) ramp up protests over the sexual assault of a student at Anna University. Leading the charge for the PMK women’s wing, Soumya Anbumani staged a fiery protest in Chennai with the slogan “Am I Next?”, demanding immediate justice for the survivor and systemic reforms to protect students in Anna University and other campuses.

BJP state president K Annamalai took a dramatic approach by lashing himself with a whip in Coimbatore as part of his protest against the incident, vowing to remove the DMK government from power. The AIADMK joined the movement, with its IT Wing holding protests across the state, spotlighting government negligence with the slogan “Who is that, sir?”

PMK Protest

In response to the Anna University incident, the PMK has mounted a campaign under the slogan “Am I Next?”. Posters bearing this question were plastered across Chennai ahead of the protest at Valluvar Kottam. Soumya Anbumani, addressing the gathering, called for stringent action against the accused and a thorough investigation into the case, including the alleged involvement of others.

“The safety of our students should be non-negotiable,” she said. “This is not just about one incident but a larger failure to ensure a secure environment for our youth.”

The protest, however, faced resistance from authorities, as the Chennai police denied permission for the gathering, citing security concerns. Despite this, a significant number of protesters assembled, prompting heavy police deployment at the venue to maintain order.

Protest By BJP

Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai lashed himself six times with a whip on 27 December 2024 outside his residence in Coimbatore as part of a personal protest against the sexual assault of an Anna University student.

Annamalai had announced the previous day that he would whip himself as a symbolic protest against the incident. He also vowed not to wear slippers until the DMK government is removed from power in Tamil Nadu.

The BJP leader said he would pray at all six temples of Lord Muruga, the revered war deity in southern India. The former IPS officer has been leading the Tamil Nadu BJP aggressively and has been vocal in his criticism of the ruling DMK government.

Annamalai condemned the police for leaking the FIR related to the sexual assault case, which resulted in the identification of the 19-year-old victim, an engineering student at Anna University. He accused the authorities of intentionally leaking the details and failing to ensure the safety and anonymity of the survivor.

The BJP president further alleged that the accused, Gnanashekaran, was not included in the police’s rowdy list despite being involved in several criminal cases already. He claimed that this omission was due to Gnanashekaran’s close ties with DMK leaders and provided evidence of the accused’s affiliation with the ruling party.

Protest By ADMK

The AIADMK IT Wing members staged a protest at the Express Avenue Mall in Royapettah, Chennai, holding banners with the slogan “Who is that sir?” to draw attention to the recent sexual assault of a student on the Anna University campus and to criticize the Tamil Nadu government’s handling of the case. Posters with the slogan “Who is that sir?” have been plastered across several cities, including Chennai, Karur, Thanjavur, and Tirunelveli. The posters also feature hashtags like #SaveOurDaughters.

During the protest at Express Avenue Mall, AIADMK IT Wing members addressed the public, including women shoppers, to highlight their concerns about the incident and alleged lapses by the government. Videos of the demonstration are circulating widely on social media, drawing mixed reactions from the public.

Protest By TVK

Women cadre from the actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam were arrested for distributing pamphlets containing a handwritten letter by Vijay condemning the assault case at the entrance of VR Mall in Chennai. They aimed to raise awareness about the sexual assault incident on the Anna University campus. Similarly, members of the women’s wing of the Karur District of TVK were questioned and arrested after presenting the letter in front of the Karur Government Arts College gate. The police raised concerns about the unauthorized distribution of the letter, causing a stir in the area.

Background

On 23 December 2024, a woman, who was in a two-year relationship with a fellow student, was attacked while spending time with her boyfriend at a secluded spot on campus.

Two unknown individuals approached the couple, assaulted the boyfriend, and sexually assaulted the woman. The assailants forced her to strip, filmed her without consent, threatened her, and fled the scene. The traumatized victim later reported the incident to the Kotturpuram police.

In connection with the case, police have arrested 37-year-old Gnanasekaran, a roadside biryani vendor from Kotturpuram with multiple pending cases against him. The police have filed charges under Section 64 of the BNSS and are actively investigating the matter.

The victim also lodged a complaint with the university’s POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) committee. Meanwhile, the Chennai police, in collaboration with the university, are working to enhance campus security.

However, it came to light that the accused Gnanasekaran is a repeat offender and a DMK functionary. Pictures circulating on social media show him alongside several prominent DMK leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and Minister Ma. Subramanian.

FIR Reveals Shocking Details

The shocking details came to light after the All Women Police Station (AWPS) in Raja Annamalai Puram filed the FIR, which reveals a sequence of terrifying events that unfolded on 23 December 2024, within the Anna University campus.

The FIR states that Gnanasekaran filmed the survivor and her boyfriend on the campus before taking things to a terrifying level. He allegedly threatened to leak the footage to the university dean and the couple’s parents unless the student complied with his demands.

He then forcibly took the survivor to a secluded area behind the Highway Lab Building and the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department building, where he presented her with three horrifying options: one, to be expelled from the university by the dean based on the footage he threatened to release; two, to “spend time” with him; and three, to “spend time” with another man who had reportedly called the accused before the assault.

The Assault

According to the FIR, after making these threats, Gnanasekaran sexually assaulted the survivor between 7:45 PM and 8:20 PM on 23 December 2024. He also took a picture of her college ID card and extracted her father’s contact information from her phone before fleeing the scene. The survivor, in her written complaint, described how Gnanasekaran had received a phone call from an unknown person, during which he mentioned threatening the girl and leaving her.

The police investigation revealed that Gnanasekaran is no stranger to criminal activity, with seven other pending cases against him, including charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for lurking house trespass and theft. He has now been charged under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections for rape and sexual harassment.
